The chronology of third molar eruption in the Croatian population.

Dental age estimation is common in orthodontics, paedodontics, paleodontology and forensic dentistry. The aim of this study was to assess chronological course of eruptive developmental phases of third molar and to establish parameters for the Croatian population. Sample of this study consisted of 1249 orthopantomograms of 530 (42.4%) male and 719 (57.6%) female subjects, aged 10 to 25 years. Eruptive phases were classified in 4 stages. No significant sex difference was found. Established chronology of the third molar eruption can be used as a standard for the assessment of dental age in clinic

Determination and validation of criteria to define hypercementosis in two medieval samples from France (Sains-en-Gohelle, AD 7th-17th century; Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac, AD 7th-8th century).

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this article was to develop different visual criteria allowing for an objective definition of hypercementosis (cementum hyperplasia). This preliminary study must notably show how to better understand at a later stage the significance of its frequency as well as its aetiologies, especially in past populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: we set up a study protocol (macroscopic and photographic observations) on material consisting of 2 medieval samples from France (1) Sains-en-Gohelle sample-SG (AD 7th-17th century; 407 individuals; 5756 teeth observed, 319 with hypercemen

A new genus of dipnoiformes from the Cretaceous of Brazil.

The Alcântara Formation, an important stratigraphic unit from the early Cenomanian of Brazil, was deposited under transitional (estuarine) conditions, and its fossil record includes fragmentary remains of plants, fishes, crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs and dinosaurs, with a noteworthy diversity of dipnoiformes tooth plates. The dipnoiformes material reported here comprises a new taxon, Equinoxiodus alcantarensis, gen. et sp. nov. Most of the identified morphotypes of continental vertebrates collected in the Alcântara Formation are similar to chronocorrelative faunas from Northern Africa, but this

Late Pleistocene carnivores (Carnivora: Mammalia) from a cave sedimentary deposit in northern Brazil.

The Brazilian Quaternary terrestrial Carnivora are represented by the following families: Canidae, Felidae, Ursidae, Procyonidae Mephitidae and Mustelidae. Their recent evolutionary history in South America is associated with the uplift of the Panamanian Isthmus, and which enabled the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). Here we present new fossil records of Carnivora found in a cave in Aurora do Tocantins, Tocantins, northern Brazil. A stratigraphical controlled collection in the sedimentary deposit of the studied cave revealed a fossiliferous level where the following Carnivora taxa wer

Origin of enamel prisms and Hunter-Schreger bands in reptilian enamel.

Enamel prisms in mammalian enamel structure including human are considered to have originated in the reptilian enamel. The author has reported the original pattern of enamel prisms and of Hunter-Schreger bands in fossil reptiles of Mosasaurus sp. and Phytosaurus sp. The origin of the patterns of crystallite groups appear to arise in the fossil reptiles. Mosasaurus sp. had an island pattern and Phytosaurus sp. had a slender pattern. These two types are of various sizes, and are formed by variable numbers of ameloblasts. The number of ameloblasts involved in the formation of the crystallite grou

Comparative morphology, histology and growth of the dental plates of the Devonian dipnoan Chirodipterus.

The dental plates of the Devonian lungfish Chirodipterus australis Miles (Osteichthyes; Dipnoi) are shown to have achieved their characteristic morphology by a growth process different from that assumed for the plates of genera such as Dipterus. Each plate was thickened by the addition of layers of bone that also extended the plate labially, thus providing the base on which and into which dentine grew. Distinctive features of the dentition are: (a) labial increase of the dentine mass by the addition of blister-like denticles of simple enamel-covered dentine, which is initially ingrown by plero

Timing of clinical eruption of third molars in a Jordanian population.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at providing the first standards on the timing of third molar eruption in Jordanians. METHODS: A total of 571 healthy Jordanian adolescents and young adults aged 15-27 years (275 males and 296 females distributed into one-year age groups) were clinically examined for third molar eruption. Presence of four clinical eruption stages from crown emergence to full eruption were counted and expressed each as a frequency relative to the total of participants within a given age group. Using probit regression, median ages at each of the eruption stages were calculated for t

A case of canine hypodontia in an early Croatian cemetery Strance-Gorica.

In the old Croatian cemetery Strance-Gorica in the Vinodol region, dating from the 9th to 11th century, osteological parts of the upper and the lower jaws with teeth were found, besides some other archeological finds. Data processing in dentistry regarding a possible presence of hypodontia was carried out on archeological finds (skeletal remains) on 27 persons available for the research. Only one case of canine hypodontia was found and described. In the remaining 26 persons no case of hypodontia was found on the relicts of the upper and lower jaws nor in other teeth groups. The frequency of hy

A remarkable cranium of Plesiopithecus teras (Primates, Prosimii) from the Eocene of Egypt.

Between 1991 and 1993 specimens of a highly distinctive primate, named Plesiopithecus teras [Simons, E.L. (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89, 10743-10747], were found at site L-41 in late Eocene deposits of the Fayum Depression, Egypt. The most important of these specimens consists of a nearly complete skull, which facilitates the evaluation of affinities of this primate. Characteristics of the known material now demonstrate that Plesiopithecus is a prosimian, although mandibular molar morphology, in particular, bears similarity to that in molars of archaic members of Anthropoidea. Plesiopit

An unusual double supernumerary maxillary mesiodens in a Middle Iron Age skeleton from South Uist, Western Isles, Scotland.

OBJECTIVE: Bilaterally occurring and fully erupted mesiodens occur infrequently in the modern population and have been little documented from past populations. This research presents an unusual case of a double maxillary mesiodens in the permanent dentition occurring in skeletal remains dating to the Middle Iron Age (250-410 AD) from South Uist, Western Isles of Scotland. METHODS: Osteological analysis of an adult male included the inventory of teeth present/absent and analysis of dental pathologies (caries, calculus, periodontal disease, ante-mortem tooth loss, periapical abscesses), develop

Tooth replacement pattern of Coloborhynchus robustus (Pterosauria) from the Lower Cretaceous of Brazil.

The well preserved anterior upper and lower jaw fragment of an adult specimen of Coloborhynchus robustus (Pterosauria: Ornithocheiridae), SMNK 2302 PAL, allowed investigations of the replacement pattern of the dentition macroscopically and by using CT scans. The quantification of the dentition by Zahnreihen, Z-Spacing, and replacement waves indicates a complex pattern of different replacement stages in which large gaps within the dentition were avoided. The specialized prey-catching apparatus of Coloborhynchus thus could retain its function even following tooth replacement. The replacement pro

Molar microwear and dietary reconstructions of fossil cercopithecoidea from the Plio-Pleistocene deposits of South Africa.

The South African Plio-Pleistocene cave deposits have yielded a diverse cercopithecoid fauna. In this study, the possible dietary proclivities of these extinct species are examined using details of molar microwear. Although sample sizes are often small, wear patterns suggest possible temporal changes in the diets of Parapapio jonesi from Makapansgat to Sterkfontein, of Papio robinsoni from Sterkfontein to Swartkrans, and Cercopithecoides williamsi from Makapansgat to Sterkfontein to Swartkrans. However, there does not appear to have been a significant change in the dietary habits of Parapapio

[The problems of odontogenic kinship analysis in prehistoric anthropology in the example of aplasia/hypodontia].

Prehistorians have been seeking information about kinship in burial complexes for decades. During the last few years paleoanthropologists have once again applied themselves to the resolution of that problem. Many of them favour epigenetic variants as the basis for their kinship analyses. Teeth and maxillary bones seem well suited to be investigated in view to this question. The author discusses whether hypodontia and numerical variants of teeth still meet the criteria demanded of epigenetic variants today. Using the complex odontological feature of hypodontia and its variants as a model, the a

The interdisciplinary cooperation of forensic medicine, clinical medicine and palaeozoology: a case of cave bear (Ursus speloeus) bones.

Three pathologically modified bones (cranium, left mandible, iliac bone) of a cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) were found in the Last Glacial deposits (OIS 3) in the caves of the Vel'ká Fatra carst, Slovak republic. Despite of thorough paleontological examination, the bear bones were examined by experts in forensic medicine, traumatology and stomatology, too. The pathological changes were found in the tooth bed on the right side of the maxilla at the place of M1, being interpreted as a result of odontogenic purulent inflammation of soft tissues of tooth bed and surrounding bone. The iliac bone has

INTRODUCTION: Medieval necropolis at the porch of St. Panteleimon church in Nis, from 12th century represents a typical Serbian necropolis, which has its analogies in several areas in Serbia. Preservation of the skeletal remains belongs to category of good and medium preservation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the work was to study the skeletal remains for the prevalence of tooth caries, localization of caries lesions, presence of abrasion, supragingival tartar and resorption of alveolar bone as the indicator of periodontal disease. METHOD: The analyses included 42 skeletal remains. The anthropologi
