Paleontology: Gliders in the storm.

Fossils fascinate by the immediacy with which they let us envisage ancient life; but understanding how past animals lived requires - paradoxically - understanding how they died and fossilized. Drawing on a treasure trove of pterosaurs, a new study links biases in the fossil record to extreme weather events in deep time.

Extinction from a paleontological perspective.

Extinction of widespread species is common in evolutionary time (millions of years) but rare in ecological time (hundreds or thousands of years). In the fossil record, there appears to be a smooth continuum between background and mass extinction; and the clustering of extinctions at mass extinctions cannot be explained by the chance coincidence of independent events. Although some extinction is selective, much is apparently random in that survivors have no recognizable superiority over victims. Extinction certainly plays an important role in evolution, but whether it is constructive or destruc

Paleoanthropology: Homo erectus and the limits of a paleontological species.

The bushy nature of the human evolutionary tree in the past 3 million years is widely accepted. Yet, a spectacular new fossil of early Homo has prompted some paleoanthropologists to prune our family tree.

Building Baluchitherium and Indricotherium: imperial and international networks in early-twentieth century paleontology.

Over the first decades of the twentieth century, the fragmentary remains of a huge prehistoric ungulate were unearthed in scientific expeditions in India, Turkestan and Mongolia. Following channels of formal and informal empire, these were transported to collections in Britain, Russia and the United States. While striking and of immense size, the bones proved extremely difficult to interpret. Alternately naming the creature Paraceratherium, Baluchitherium and Indricotherium, paleontologists Clive Forster-Cooper, Alexei Borissiak and Henry Fairfield Osborn struggled over the reconstruction of t

Sampling impacts the assessment of tooth growth and replacement rates in archosaurs: implications for paleontological studies.

Dietary habits in extinct species cannot be directly observed; thus, in the absence of extraordinary evidence, they must be reconstructed with a combination of morphological proxies. Such proxies often include information on dental organization and function such as tooth formation time and tooth replacement rate. In extinct organisms, tooth formation times and tooth replacement rate are calculated, in part via extrapolation of the space between incremental lines in dental tissues representing daily growth (von Ebner Line Increment Width; VEIW). However, to date, little work has been conducted

Underwater paleontology inside cenotes reveals the Miocene-Pliocene fish diversity in the Yucatan Peninsula, southeast Mexico.

The Yucatan Peninsula, southeast México, hosts a unique underwater karstic system of galleries connected by multiple sinkholes, locally called cenotes. This system is developed on a great Late Miocene to Early Pliocene carbonate platform belonging to the Carrillo Puerto Formation. The karstification process partially erodes these deposits' surfaces and exposes the fossil assemblage. Here, we present the fossil fish diversity in underwater prospections in the Cenotes Sambulá, San Juan, and X-Nabuy. Our results indicate the presence of at least 11 different taxa, which include: 1) species that l

Extending the paleontology-biogeography reciprocity with SDMs: Exploring models and data in reducing fossil taxonomic uncertainty.

Historically, studies aimed at prospecting and analyzing paleontological and neontological data to investigate species distribution have developed separately. Research at the interface between paleontology and biogeography has shown a unidirectional bias, mostly focusing on how paleontological information can aid biogeography to understand species distribution through time. However, the modern suit of techniques of ecological biogeography, particularly species distribution models (SDM), can be instrumental for paleontologists as well, improving the biogeography-paleontology interchange. In thi

Quantitative dual-energy CT as a nondestructive tool to identify indicators for fossilized bone in vertebrate paleontology.

Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) is an imaging technique that combines nondestructive morphological cross-sectional imaging of objects and the quantification of their chemical composition. However, its potential to assist investigations in paleontology has not yet been explored. This study investigates quantitative DECT for the nondestructive density- and element-based material decomposition of fossilized bones. Specifically, DECT was developed and validated for imaging-based calcium and fluorine quantification in bones of five fossil vertebrates from different geological time periods an

The "bear" essentials: actualistic research on Ursus arctos arctos in the Spanish Pyrenees and its implications for paleontology and archaeology.

Neotaphonomic studies of large carnivores are used to create models in order to explain the formation of terrestrial vertebrate fossil faunas. The research reported here adds to the growing body of knowledge on the taphonomic consequences of large carnivore behavior in temperate habitats and has important implications for paleontology and archaeology. Using photo- and videotrap data, we were able to describe the consumption of 17 ungulate carcasses by wild brown bears (Ursus arctos arctos) ranging the Spanish Pyrenees. Further, we analyzed the taphonomic impact of these feeding bouts on the bo

[The work of I.I. Schmalhousen on comparative morphology of vertebrates: Significance for paleontological reconstructions (data on the seismo-sensory system of agnathans)].

The morphology and function of the seismo-sensory system of agnathans (Agnatha: Heterostraci) are analyzed. This system has been reconstructed in Cyathaspidiformes and Amphiaspidiformes. The seismo-sensory system of agnathans was compared with the lateral line system of fishes: the difference between these systems in the density of seismo-sensory lines and the contribution level of these systems to orientation in the water was detected. The possibility of reconstruction of the length and direction of heterostracans cranial nerves has been shown using the position ofseismo-sensory lines and dep

Specimen-level phylogenetic analysis and taxonomic revision of North American metoposaurids: a case for monospecific genera in vertebrate paleontology.

The Metoposauridae were a widespread family of aquatic Late Triassic temnospondyl amphibians known from numerous localities in non-marine strata of the Northern Hemisphere, India, and Madagascar. Recent descriptions of intraspecific variation in skulls from hyper accumulations suggest some characters used in species diagnoses may be variable within hypothesized populations. This realization necessitates the reevaluation of taxonomic diagnoses for previously established species. Multiple monospecific hyper accumulations of different metoposaurid taxa are known in North America providing a relat

From Teeth to Baleen and Raptorial to Bulk Filter Feeding in Mysticete Cetaceans: The Role of Paleontological, Genetic, and Geochemical Data in Feeding Evolution and Ecology.

The origin of baleen and filter feeding in mysticete cetaceans occurred sometime between approximately 34 and 24 million years ago and represents a major macroevolutionary shift in cetacean morphology (teeth to baleen) and ecology (raptorial to filter feeding). We explore this dramatic change in feeding strategy by employing a diversity of tools and approaches: morphology, molecules, development, and stable isotopes from the geological record. Adaptations for raptorial feeding in extinct toothed mysticetes provide the phylogenetic context for evaluating morphological apomorphies preserved in t

Evolution of antero-posterior patterning of the limb: Insights from the chick.

The developing limbs of chicken embryos have served as pioneering models for understanding pattern formation for over a century. The ease with which chick wing and leg buds can be experimentally manipulated, while the embryo is still in the egg, has resulted in the discovery of important developmental organisers, and subsequently, the signals that they produce. Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is produced by mesenchyme cells of the polarizing region at the posterior margin of the limb bud and specifies positional values across the antero-posterior axis (the axis running from the thumb to the little finger

Deep-time origin of tympanic hearing in crown reptiles.

The invasion of terrestrial ecosystems by tetrapods (c. 375 million years [Ma]) represents one of the major evolutionary transitions in the history of life on Earth. The success of tetrapods on land is linked to evolutionary novelties. Among these, the evolution of a tympanic ear contributed to mitigating the problem of an impedance mismatch between the air and the fluid embedding sound-detecting hair cells in the inner ear.1,2,3 Pioneering studies advocated that similarities in the tympanic ear of tetrapods could only result from a single origin of this structure in the group,4,5 an idea late

Methodological innovations for the study of irreplaceable samples reveal giardiasis in extinct animals (Nothrotherium maquinense and Palaeolama maior).

The use of diagnostic methods that prevent irreplaceable samples (from museum collections, archaeological and paleontological samples) of being consumed or that increase their yield is relevant. For museum collections, archaeological and paleontological samples it is essential to conserve samples, subsamples or portions for future research. We are addressing methods for conservation of irreplaceable samples that could be fully consumed. Innovations in methodologies that are used in studies of Paleoparasitology and Paleomicrobiology will contribute to the preservation of collections. Therefore,

Quantitative Genetic Analysis of Baboon Facial Variation Challenges a Classic Papionin Trait.

The Linnaean family of monkeys that includes baboons, macaques, and mandrills (among others) is notably characterized by large, extended muzzles that vary in lateral nasal dorsum profile. In paleontological studies, this variation is referred to as the anteorbital drop (AOD). Here, we first devise a method to quantify this phylogenetic character. We then employ quantitative genetic analyses using a MCMCglmm model of facial variation in a captive, pedigreed baboon colony (n = 934), including admixed individuals derived from at least two Papio species, from the Southwest National Primate Researc
