A case of Pantoea endophthalmitis.

A previously healthy 50-year-old man was transferred to our hospital for evaluation of acute inflammation in his right eye after ocular trauma while using a grass mower. Slit lamp examination showed 1 mm-length full thickness corneal laceration without leakage, 4+ cells and inflammatory membrane in the anterior chamber, 10% hypopyon, posterior synechiae formation, and cataract change. Upon orbital computerized tomography, a metallic intraocular foreign body in the lens was identified. Vitrectomy, phacoemulsification, foreign body removal, anterior chamber irrigation, and intravitreal antibioti

Bacteremic infection with Pantoea ananatis.

A 73-year-old man was hospitalized for dyspnea and bilateral ankle edema. During his hospital stay he presented anal hemorrhage and developed a high fever after colonoscopy. A set of aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles yielded a pure culture of gram-negative rods, susceptible to all antibiotics tested. The API20E code was 1005133, resulting in a very good identification as Pantoea sp. Subsequent sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene revealed a final identification as Pantoea ananatis. The patient was given intravenous and oral therapy with piperacillin-tazobactam and ofloxacin and recovered

Diversity and Taxonomic Classification of Plasmids in Pantoea.

Plasmids play a key role in prokaryotic evolution, as their acquisition can lead to the emergence of novel traits that confer adaptive advantages during niche colonization. Members of the genus Pantoea harbor diverse plasmids, many of which encode metabolic functions or mechanisms relevant for interactions with eukaryotic hosts, predominantly plants and insects. Several Pantoea plasmids have been characterized as domesticated, that is, vertically inherited similarly to chromosomes, whereas others are mobile or mobilizable. Although knowledge of Pantoea plasmid function and evolution is expandi

Pantoea dispersa peritoneal dialysis catheter-related infection.

Enteric gram-negative bacteria-associated peritoneal dialysis (PD) peritonitis is common. These organisms are such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Pantoea dispersa belongs to the order Enterobacterales, it has known benefits and a role in agricultural and environmental biotechnology. Pantoea dispersa, although still relatively rare, is being increasingly recognised to cause human infections. We are reporting a case of PD peritonitis caused by Pantoea dispersa in a kidney failure patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). His peritonitis was treated w

Pantoea agglomerans septicemia in three newborn infants.

Pantoea infections are rare in humans, especially in neonates. Infections are usually associated with plant thorn injury or outbreaks traced to contaminated parenteral nutrition, intravenous anesthetics or packed erythrocytes. Between 1st of January 1994 and 1st of June 2005, 125 of 6383 patients (2%) in a 24-bed level III NICU became colonized with Pantoea agglomerans. Three newborns exhibited late-onset Pantoea agglomerans septicemia and died. Sporadic cases of Pantoea agglomerans septicemia have not been reported in neonatal intensive care so far.

Pantoea in Peritoneal Dialysis: A Rare Cause of Peritonitis.

Peritonitis is the most common complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and an important cause of PD failure. There are numerous etiological agents, mostly bacteria. Pantoea spp is a rare cause of peritonitis. We describe three cases of Pantoea peritonitis in three PD patients. Previous reports have identified risk factors such as close contact with plants and animals. We review the typical clinical presentation and prognosis. It is fulcral to teach patients about the risks regarding proximity to plants and animals to prevent this type of infection.

The clinical picture of neonatal infection with Pantoea species.

Pantoea infections are uncommon in humans. Most reports have involved adults or children after thorn injuries. There are only a few reports of systemic infections with Pantoea. This is the first report of the clinical picture of systemic Pantoea spp. infection in neonates as observed during an outbreak in a neonatal intensive care unit caused by infected parenteral nutrition solutions. Even though detected early, the infections had a fulminant course, causing septicemic shock and respiratory failure. Pulmonary disease was prominent and presented mainly as pulmonary hemorrhage and adult respira

Pantoea and Plants: Friends, Foes, and Everything in Between.

The genus Pantoea includes species that occupy diverse ecological niches and exhibit significant functional versatility. Historically associated with taxonomic ambiguity within the Enterobacter agglomerans / Erwinia herbicola complex, the advent of genome-based approaches has substantially refined species delineation and evolutionary relationships within the genus. Pantoea species are ubiquitous, occupying environmental, plant, insect and clinical habitats, where they function as mutualists, commensals or opportunistic pathogens. In plant-associated interactions, they contribute to growth prom

Pantoea dispersa: an unusual cause of neonatal sepsis.

Neonatal septicemia is the most important cause of neonatal mortality. A wide variety of bacteria both aerobic and anaerobic can cause neonatal sepsis. Genus Pantoea is a member of Enterobacteriaceae family that inhabits plants, soil and water and rarely causes human infections, however, Pantoea dispersa has not been reported as a causative organism for neonatal sepsis. We hereby report two neonates with early onset sepsis caused by Pantoea dispersa. Early detection and appropriate antibiotic therapy can improve overall outcome of this rare infection in neonates.

Identification of Pantoea agglomerans in a patient with chronic abdominal sinus.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pantoea agglomerans, a yellow-pigmented, gram-negative aerobic non-sporing bacillus belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae, is an opportunistic pathogen often associated with infections in immunocompromised individuals. This report highlights a case of P. agglomerans identified in the peritoneal fluid of a 35-year-old female with a chronic abdominal sinus. The organism was sensitive to most antibiotics, and the patient responded well to empirical treatment with cefoperazone/sulbactum. This case underscores the importance of accurate microbial identification in

Structure of O-Polysaccharide and Lipid A of Pantoea Agglomerans 8488.

The Pantoea agglomerans 8488 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was isolated, purified and characterized by monosaccharide and fatty acid analysis. The O-polysaccharide and lipid A components of the LPS were separated by mild acid degradation. Lipid A was studied by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and found to consist of hexa-, penta-, tetra- and tri-acylated species. Two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy revealed the following structure of the O-polysaccharide repeating unit →3)-α-L-Rhap-(1→6)-α-D-Manp-(1→3)-α-L-Fucp-(1→3)-β-D-GlcNAcp-(1→. The LPS showed a low

Osteomyelitis caused by Pantoea agglomerans in a closed fracture in a child.

Development of osteomyelitis in a closed fracture is rare. Although it has been reported that trivial trauma may be associated with the subsequent development of acute osteomyelitis, no evidence has been found that fractures are involved in the etiology of osteomyelitis. Only 25 cases (11 in adolescents) of osteomyelitis after closed fracture have been reported in literature. The authors report a case of osteomyelitis in an 8-year-old girl after a forearm fracture involving the diaphysis of the radius and ulna. Radiographic examinations were performed 5, 14, and 30 days after trauma. At last e

Molecular validation of clinical Pantoea isolates identified by MALDI-TOF.

The Enterobacterial genus Pantoea contains both free-living and host-associating species, with considerable debate as to whether documented reports of human infections by members of this species group are accurate. MALDI-TOF-based identification methods are commonly used in clinical laboratories as a rapid means of identification, but its reliability for identification of Pantoea species is unclear. In this study, we carried out cpn60-based molecular typing of 54 clinical isolates that had been identified as Pantoea using MALDI-TOF and other clinical typing methods. We found that 24% had been

Pseudooutbreak of Pantoea species bacteremia associated with contaminated cotton pledgets.

A total of 22 isolates of Pantoea strains, unusual causative agents of clinical infection, was isolated from blood cultures from 9 patients and 1 ear swab from 1 of the patients within a period of 1 month in a tertiary-care hospital. Pseudooutbreak was suspected because specimens were collected from a limited number of places and the patients did not show consistent signs or symptoms of bacterial sepsis. Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and partial 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing were performed to determine the clonal relationship among the is

Dissimilatory metal reduction by the facultative anaerobe Pantoea agglomerans SP1.

Anaerobic enrichments with acetate as the electron donor and Fe(III) as the terminal electron acceptor were obtained from sediments of Salt Pond, a coastal marine basin near Woods Hole, Mass. A pure culture of a facultatively anaerobic Fe(III) reducer was isolated, and 16S rRNA analysis demonstrated that this organism was most closely related to Pantoea (formerly Enterobacter) agglomerans, a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae within the gamma subdivision of the Proteobacteria. This organism, designated strain SP1, can grow by coupling the oxidation of acetate or H(2) to the reduction of a
