[Genital papillomavirus infections].

The incidence of condyloma acuminata is increasing in all developed countries with highest rates recorded for young sexually males and females, between the ages of 16 and 25 years. Subclinical and latent genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are highly prevalent. Direct correlation between number of sexual partners and presence of HPV is evident. Clinical HPV infections such as condylomas (acuminata and papular) are easily recognized, but acetowhite flat macular condylomas require colposcopic examination. High grade IN (cervical CIN II, III, vulvar VIN, anal AIN, penile PIN) are consid

Human papillomavirus infections.

Though the existence of disease associated with HPV has been documented for centuries, it has been only within the past 2 decades that we have recognized the clinical diversity and significant morbidity and mortality associated with HPV infections. The original lack of interest and nonavailability of in vitro culture systems has hampered research. However, with the advent of molecular diagnostic techniques, strong evidence suggests that HPV plays a major role in the development of specific anogenital cancers, including cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and anal. It is this association between

Genital human papillomavirus infections.

Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is an increasingly common sexually transmitted disease that has been associated with carcinoma of the cervix. Genital warts are easily diagnosed by clinical criteria; however, the more prevalent subclinical infections generally require laboratory diagnosis. Satisfactory methods for culture of HPV do not exist, and cytologic and histopathologic methods are the most widely available diagnostic techniques. Detection of HPV DNA is a more sensitive method, but its role in the clinical laboratory remains to be defined.

Genital human papillomavirus infections.

In summary, the development of new techniques to identify HPV DNA in genital secretions and tissue, the recognition of subclinical HPV infection, and the remarkable association between HPV and genital neoplasia have markedly increased the concern of both patients and physicians about genital wart virus infections. The prevalence of this viral STD appears to be increasing and the clinical spectrum of disease appears to be expanding. New methods to diagnose genital HPV infection and techniques to treat these infections more effectively are under development. It is hoped that these techniques wil

Ocular Human Papillomavirus Infections.

CONTEXT: - Human papillomavirus (HPV) has a well-known role in the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma and precursor lesions of the cervix, anogenital region, and head and neck, but its role in the development of squamous neoplasms of the eye, particularly the conjunctiva, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: - To review recent evidence implicating HPV in the pathophysiology of ocular lesions. DATA SOURCES: - Published articles obtained from a PubMed search of the English literature were the primary sources for this review. CONCLUSIONS: - The low-risk HPV types 6 and 11 appear to play a role in

[Significance of human papillomavirus infections].

Human papillomavirus is one of the most frequent sexually transmitted diseases; more than three quarters of sexually active population are infected during their lifetime. Most of papillomavirus infections clear spontaneously, however persistent high-risk human papillomavirus 16 and 18 are responsible for over 70% of all cases of cervical cancer and related to a major part of cancers in the vulva, vagina, penis, anal region, and oropharynx. It is estimated that approximately 5.2% of all cancers are associated with oncogenic human papillomavirus infection.

Anogenital papillomavirus infections in children.

Over the years, our impression of human papillomavirus has changed. Once thought of as the cause of relatively insignificant skin lesions, its significant role in malignancy of epithelia and mucosa throughout the body is beginning to be understood. Also changing, although not as rapidly as we would like is our understanding of how human papillomavirus infects the body, the concept of latency, our responses to infection, and how to modify or boost those responses so as to overcome infection. Research into the specifics of how our immune systems react, or why they do not, should give us better i

Noncervical human papillomavirus genital infections.

The incidence of human papillomavirus infection is increasing. More than 60 types of human papillomavirus have been isolated; some types are known to have malignant potential. Differential diagnosis of the lesions includes condyloma latum, seborrheic keratoses, nevi, pearly penile papules and neoplasms. The goal in treating noncervical human papillomavirus infection is the elimination of lesions; eradication of the virus is not yet possible. Current forms of treatment include cryotherapy, podophyllum resin, podophilox, trichloroacetic acid, laser ablation, loop electrosurgical excision procedu

Human papillomavirus infections in children.

Human papillomavirus infections in children, particularly when occurring as condylomata acuminata, present a difficult and often puzzling problem. The possibility that the lesions were acquired through sexual contact mandates a careful and thorough evaluation. Even then, the source of the infection may be elusive because of a long latency between inoculation and the development of lesions, the secretive milieu of childhood sexual abuse, and lack of data about modes of transmission. New molecular techniques of HPV DNA detection and typing have not proven to be helpful in determining the source

Epidemiology of human papillomavirus infections.

Human papillomavirus infection represents the most common mucocutaneous viral infection, and 3% to 5% of all patients have clinically evident warts. Human papillomavirus infections of the genital tract are one of the most common sexually transmitted viral infections in the United States. Data from STD clinics and private physicians' offices reveal that genital warts, one manifestation of genital HPV infection, have been diagnosed more frequently in recent years. With the use of a variety of diagnostic techniques, asymptomatic HPV infection has been identified in men and women and is probably m

[Urogenital and anal papillomavirus infections].

Recently virologists and clinicians have focused attention on infections with human papillomaviruses (HPV). This is due to the ubiquity, the increasing frequency and the possible association of these viruses with the development of squamous cell carcinomas of the skin and of the mucous membranes of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and anorectal tracts. HPV represent a very heterogeneous group of DNA tumor viruses. By means of molecular-biological techniques, more than 40 HPV types have been recognized. In the urogenital and anal tract, papillomaviruses have been associated with

Therapeutic approaches to papillomavirus infections.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause benign tumors (i.e., warts) and are occasionally responsible for malignant tumors such as squamous-cell carcinomas. Therapy for most warts is commonly via surgical or cytodestructive methods. Presently, only one antiviral/immunomodulatory drug is available for wart therapy; this agent, interferon alpha (IFN alpha), is approved only for genital warts (condylomata acuminata) and is expensive, relatively difficult to use, associated with systemic side effects, and somewhat slow acting. Two new antiviral/immunomodulatory drugs, imiquimod and cidofovir, have been

Interferons in human papillomavirus infections.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections usually present as benign warts (e.g., condyloma acuminatum, CA) but can also be responsible for dysplasia and carcinoma. Therapeutic options include chemotherapeutic agents, cryotherapy and surgery, but all these treatments are anti-tumor, not anti-viral. Interferons (IFNs) are the only anti-viral drugs approved for the therapy of benign HPV-related lesions. While IFN-alpha, IFN-beta and IFN-gamma have all been tested against CA, most information is available on IFN-alpha which appears efficacious via a number of routes of administration, schedules and do

Human papillomavirus infections and oral tumors.

In the past 20 years, there has been an increasing interest in human papillomaviruses (HPV) because of their potential role in the pathogenesis of malignant tumors. In 1983, we published the first evidence that HPV might be involved in oral squamous cell carcinomas. The identification of morphological similarities between oral and cervical mucosa lead us to this original proposal. In a recent meta-analysis, HPV was indeed confirmed as an independent risk factor for oral carcinoma. To date, totally more than 100 types of HPV have been identified. As in anogenital cancers, HPV type 16 is the mos

Human papillomavirus infections in skin cancers.

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most frequent cancer among Caucasians worldwide. The lesions occur preferentially on sun-exposed sites of the body. The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the etiology of carcinoma of the genital tract is well established. Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) has been regarded as a model for NMSC developing on sun-exposed sites. Infection with a specific group of HPV types has been associated with the benign and malignant lesions occurring in these patients. Recent studies using improved detection methods, as well as re-examining material used in previ
