Severe whipworm (Trichuris spp.) infection in the hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas).

A 3-year-old male hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) at the Seoul Zoo, Korea, died without any previous symptoms. Necropsy revealed severe whipworm infection in the large intestine. The animal weighed 2.6 kg and had a blood clot at the anus. Numerous whipworms were found attached to the intestinal wall, with their anterior ends embedded in the mucosa. Fecal microscopy revealed typical barrel-shaped, brown eggs of Trichuris spp., with hyaline polar plugs at each end. Histopathological examination revealed the thin anterior part of Trichuris spp. embedded in the mucosal layer and the thick poste

Prolactin Expression in the Baboon (Papio hamadryas) Eye.

UNLABELLED: Prolactin (PRL) is a hormone expressed in lactotrophs cells of the pituitary gland in primates. Extra pituitary expression of PRL has been reported, including the eye; however, expression in the developing eye of primates is limited. The aim of the study was determining the expression of PRL and PRL receptor (PRLR) (mRNAs and proteins) in adult and fetal baboon (Papio hamadryas) ocular tissues. METHODS: We analyzed PRL and PRLR in baboon eyes tissues by immunofluorescence. The mRNAs of PRL and PRLR were detected by RT-PCR, cDNA was cloned, and sequenced. Furthermore, we performed

Hamadryas baboons Papio hamadryas as maintenance hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in Saudi Arabia.

Free ranging hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) in four localities in the west and north of Saudi Arabia were examined for natural infection with Schistosoma mansoni. Faecal examination revealed infection with S. mansoni on four occasions within one year (at a prevalence rate of 2.5-4.0%) in only one locality, the Al-Baha area. The eggs were viable, as shown by miracidial hatching tests, and were recorded at a density of 140-280 eggs/g of faeces (7000-14,000 eggs/day). Post-mortem examination of 13-24 baboons from each locality revealed infection with S. mansoni (adult worms and eggs in tissu

Relationship Between Epilepsy and Colpocephaly in Baboons (Papio hamadryas).

Brain MRI scans revealed various occipital horn variants in a pedigreed baboon colony consisting of Papio hamadryas anubis and its hybrids. We retrospectively characterized these variants and evaluated their relationships to epilepsy phenotypes and scalp EEG findings. MRI scans (3D, T1-weighted) from 208 baboons (female, 134 female; male, 74; age [mean ± 1 SD], 16 ± 5 y) were reviewed; 139 (67%) of these animals also underwent scalp EEG previously. Occipital horn variants included elongation (extension of the occipital ventricle behind the mediobasal origin of the calcarine fissure), which aff

Helminthic infestation complicated by intussusception in baboons (Papio hamadryas).

Two juvenile baboons presented with diarrhoea, which did not resolve completely following antibiotic therapy. Ileal intussusception was identified at autopsy in both cases. Trichuris was the only gastrointestinal pathogen for which evidence could be found. This helminth is well-recognized as a cause of intussusception in human infants, but the complication has not been reported previously in non-human primates. It is likely to be fatal if undiagnosed.

Effects of urban association on the movement ecology of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) in Saudi Arabia.

Human-wildlife conflict involving primates is an emerging conservation concern in rapidly urbanizing regions. The hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas), the only native non-human primate of the Arabian Peninsula, increasingly exploits anthropogenic food sources, intensifying human-baboon conflict across southwestern Saudi Arabia. To examine how human-modified environments influence baboon spatial ecology; we fitted GPS collars to ten adult males representing groups that are regarded as living in urban, natural and semi-natural environments across five regions. Over nine months, we collected 13,96

Zoonotic intestinal parasites of hamadryas baboons Papio hamadryas in the western and northern regions of Saudi Arabia.

Six hundred and thirty-three faecal samples were randomly collected and examined for ova and cysts of intestinal parasites from five groups of hamadryas baboons of different population densities, with different human contact and in different ecological conditions (Al-Baha, Turabah and Al-Taif in south-western and Al-Rihat and Al-Akhal in north-western Saudi Arabia). Nine parasites were recorded (Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Escherichia coli, Balantidium coli, Enterobius sp., Trichuris sp., Hookworm, Hymenolepis nana and Schistosoma mansoni) in 274 samples (43.28%). Ecological Drivers of Breeding Peak in Hamadryas Baboons (Papio hamadryas) Across Two Contrasting Habitats in Saudi Arabia.

Reproduction could be the most important control point for the spread of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas). Understanding the drivers of reproduction is necessary to determine which interventions may work best, in which locations, and at what time of year. We analyzed monthly variation in the proportion of estrous females and black infants in two troops inhabiting two different sites (Dam and Al Hada) in Saudi Arabia over the course of one year (one week per month; ~720 h per site-year; non-contemporaneous). The effects of season, rainfall, natural food diversity, and anthropogenic foods wer

Primary amenorrhea associated with ovarian leiomyoma in a baboon (Papio hamadryas).

A 6-y-old female baboon was examined due to absence of menstrual cycling and secondary sex characteristics and failure to reproduce. The mammary glands and vaginal introitus were hypoplastic, the clitoris was prominent, and the perineal skin was immature with lack of cyclic color alterations and sexual swelling. Evaluation of the reproductive tract revealed a hypoplastic uterus and rudimentary ovaries with the presence of an ovarian leiomyoma within the right ovary. Hormonal values (estradiol, progesterone) were low and comparable to those of adult males or ovariectomized females. Adrenal and

Effect of stress on the profile of plasma steroids in baboons (Papio hamadryas).

Adult baboons (5 males and 5 females) were exposed to immobilization stress by being strapped to a table in a horizontal position for 2 h. In females the experiment was performed during both the follicular and luteal phase. Peripheral blood was withdrawn at frequent intervals, the first sample just before immobilization, and the last one 3 days later. A number of steroids were measured in blood plasma samples by radioimmunoassay (17-hydroxypregnenolone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, pregnenolone, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, progesterone, 20alpha-dihydroprogesterone, oestone, oestradiol) or co

Assessment of livestock depredation by hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) in and around Borena-Sayint National Park, northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: As human populations expand and natural habitats become increasingly fragmented, the interface between agricultural activities and wilderness areas has become a focal point of ecological tension. Livestock depredation is a prevalent form of human-wildlife conflict, particularly in landscapes bordering protected areas. Beyond causing substantial financial losses for subsistence communities, these conflicts often generate negative attitudes toward wildlife, ultimately hindering long-term conservation efforts. Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) is distributed across diverse environmen

Alzheimer disease-like neuropathologic changes in a geriatric baboon (Papio hamadryas).

IMPORTANCE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly with the incidence rising exponentially after the age of 65 years. Unfortunately, effective treatments are extremely limited and definite diagnosis can only be made at autopsy. This is in part due to our limited understanding of the complex pathophysiology, including the various genetic, environmental, and metabolic contributing factors. In an effort to better understand this complex disease, researchers have employed nonhuman primates as translational models. CASE PRESENTATION: This report aims to descri

Alopecia in Outdoor Group- and Corral-Housed Baboons (Papio hamadryas spp.).

Alopecia has been reported to occur in several species of captive NHP. Much of this research has focused on macaque monkeys; whether other primate species such as baboons are affected similarly is unknown. Because alopecia can be a focus of inspectors and a possible marker of wellbeing, the purpose of the current study was to survey the occurrence of alopecia in 2 baboon populations and to identify potential risk factors. Subjects were 262 group-housed and 279 corral-housed baboons. Alopecia was assessed cage-side (group-housed) and on sedated animals (corral-housed). Although alopecia was mil

Novel genital alphapapillomaviruses in baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis) with cervical dysplasia.

Genital Alphapapillomavirus (αPV) infections are one of the most common sexually transmitted human infections worldwide. Women infected with the highly oncogenic genital human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 are at high risk for development of cervical cancer. Related oncogenic αPVs exist in rhesus and cynomolgus macaques. Here the authors identified 3 novel genital αPV types (PhPV1, PhPV2, PhPV3) by PCR in cervical samples from 6 of 15 (40%) wild-caught female Kenyan olive baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis). Eleven baboons had koilocytes in the cervix and vagina. Three baboons had dysplast

Abnormal behavior and associated risk factors in captive baboons (Papio hamadryas spp.).

Abnormal behavior, ranging from motor stereotypies to self-injurious behavior, has been documented in captive nonhuman primates, with risk factors including nursery rearing, single housing, and veterinary procedures. Much of this research has focused on macaque monkeys; less is known about the extent of and risk factors for abnormal behavior in baboons. Because abnormal behavior can be indicative of poor welfare, either past or present, the purpose of this study was to survey the presence of abnormal behavior in captive baboons and to identify potential risk factors for these behaviors with an

Molecular Detection of Toxoplasma gondii in Enclosures of African Primates (Papio papio and Papio hamadryas) at the Municipal Zoo of Bauru, São Paulo State, Brazil.

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most prevalent parasitic infections in animals and humans worldwide, attracting the attention of many researchers who, in recent decades, have identified the sources of Toxoplasma gondii infections to optimize the adoption of preventive measures. In previous studies, it has been found that humans are infected mainly by consuming raw or undercooked meat or by ingesting fruits, vegetables, seafood or water contaminated with oocysts of this protozoan. Soil contaminated with T. gondii oocysts is a source of infection for animals and humans, but it has rarely been direct

Failure of experimental infection of baboons (Papio hamadryas) with the eggs of Asian Taenia.

The infectivity of the eggs of Asian Taenia sp. for humans is not known. Using baboons (Papio hamadryas) as a model to extrapolate the findings, three animals were exposed per os with 1000, 10,000 and 50,000 infective eggs of the Asian Taenia sp. The serological, biochemical, haematological and parasitological (based on necropsy) results show that baboons are refractory to the infection. It is concluded that the Asian taeniid eggs may fail to develop in man.
