Lophomonas blattarum-like organism in bronchoalveolar lavage from a pneumonia patient: current diagnostic scheme and polymerase chain reaction can lead to false-positive results.

Lophomonas blattarum is an anaerobic protozoan living in the intestine of cockroaches and house dust mites, with ultramicroscopic characteristics such as the presence of a parabasal body, axial filament, and absence of mitochondria. More than 200 cases of Lophomonas infection of the respiratory tract have been reported worldwide. However, the current diagnosis of such infection depends only on light microscopic morphological findings from respiratory secretions. In this study, we attempted to provide more robust evidence of protozoal infection in an immunocompromised patient with atypical pneu

First Co-morbidity of Lophomonas blattarum and COVID-19 Infections: Confirmed Using Molecular Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Lophomoniasis is caused by Lophomonas spp., a new emerging protozoan, which commonly affects the human lower respiratory tract. The Lophomonas parasite mostly lives commensally in the hindgut of cockroaches. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 33-year-old woman, 30 weeks pregnant, who had severe COVID-19. She was intubated upon admission and began the routine COVID-19 treatment. To rule out possible super infection dual with COVID-19, microscopic examination of the patient's mini-bronchoalveolar lavage (mini-BAL) specimen, revealed L. blattarum, which was identified by t

Pulmonary infection by Lophomonas spp. and Aspergillus spp. in a B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia patient from Chile.

The flagellated protozoan Lophomonas spp. is a commensal microorganism found in the intestinal tracts of cockroaches, termites, mites, and certain birds. It is the causative agent of a rare infection in humans called lophomoniasis, primarily affecting the lungs and mainly immunocompromised individuals. This parasitosis is transmitted to humans by air or through ingestion of the cystic forms of the parasite. We describe the case of a 50-year-old patient treated at a tertiary hospital in southern Chile with a history of B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia. Radiological findings, along with increas

Development and Validation of In-House Conventional and Multiplex PCR Methods for the Detection and Identification of Lophomonas spp.: An Innovative Approach.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary lophomoniasis is an emerging disease caused by the protozoan pathogen Lophomonas spp. Recently, a conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method has been developed. However, its sensitivity and specificity remain to be fully established. Therefore, this study aimed to develop in-house conventional and multiplex PCR for the detection and identification of Lophomonas infections. Additionally, we attempted to compare the diagnostic performance of these novel PCR tests with the current microscopic examination method using BAL samples. METHODS: We studied 120 bronchoalve

Protein arginine methylation in parasitic protozoa.

Protozoa constitute the earliest branch of the eukaryotic lineage, and several groups of protozoans are serious parasites of humans and other animals. Better understanding of biochemical pathways that are either in common with or divergent from those of higher eukaryotes is integral in the defense against these parasites. In yeast and humans, the posttranslational methylation of arginine residues in proteins affects myriad cellular processes, including transcription, RNA processing, DNA replication and repair, and signal transduction. The protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) that cataly

[A Case of Presumptive Lophomonas Pneumonia in an Immunocompetent Man Presenting with Hemoptysis].

Lophomonas blattarum is a protozoan that typically infects the lower respiratory tract and causes bronchopulmonary infections. Although its clinical manifestations are nonspecific, they may include symptoms such as cough, sputum production, fever, chest discomfort, and respiratory distress. The diagnosis of Lophomonas infection relies on the morphological identification of the parasite in respiratory secretions using light microscopy. Differentiating the parasite from ciliated bronchial epithelial cells is challenging and critically important for accurate diagnosis. In this case report a L.bla

First detection and molecular characterization of three trichomonad species in experimental beagle dogs in China.

Three different parasites of the phylum Parabasalia (Pentatrichomonas hominis, Tritrichomonas foetus and Dientamoeba fragilis) have been described in dogs. However, limited information about the prevalence of these trichomonad species in experimental beagle dogs in China is available. The aim of the current study was to investigate the frequency and molecular characterization of these three parasites species in these dogs. A total of 452 fecal samples were collected from ordinary clean-grade experimental beagle dogs and examined using PCR analysis, and positive samples were subsequently sequen

Co-infection of lophomonas blattarum and mycobacterium tuberculosis: Insights from a study in northeastern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a significant global health challenge, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The immune suppression caused by TB increases susceptibility to secondary infections such as Lophomonas blattarum, a rare protozoan that infects the respiratory tract. Co-infection with Lophomonas can complicate TB treatment due to overlapping symptoms, leading to misdiagnosis or delayed care. This study aims to assess the prevalence and clinical impact of L. blattarum co-infection in TB patients and evaluate the need for routine screening in regions

Molecular confirmation of Trichomonas gallinae and other parabasalids from Brazil using the 5.8S and ITS-1 rRNA regions.

Clinical, gross, and histopathology lesions and molecular characterization of Trichomonas spp. infection were described in two striped owls (Asio (Rhinoptynx) clamator), one American kestrel (Falco sparverius), two green-winged saltators (Saltator similis), and in a toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) from Brazil. These birds presented clinical signs including emaciation, ruffled feathers, abundant salivation and open mouth breathing presumably due to abundant caseous material. Gross lesions were characterized by multifocal yellow friable plaques on the surface of the tongue, pharynx and/or caseous
