Microvascular anatomy of the uncus and the parahippocampal gyrus.

The microanatomical examination of the uncal and the parahippocampal arteries was performed in 17 brain hemispheres injected with India ink and gelatin. The mentioned arteries may originate from the anterior choroidal artery, the internal carotid artery, the middle cerebral artery, and the posterior cerebral artery. The uncal or the unco-parahippocampal branches of the anterior choroidal artery were divided into rostral and caudal; the former were present in 70.6%, and the latter were present in 94.1%. The uncal or the unco-parahippocampal branches of the internal carotid artery, which origina

What is the role of the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus in the persistence of tinnitus?

The hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus have been implicated as part of a tinnitus network by a number of studies. These structures are usually considered in the context of a "limbic system," a concept typically invoked to explain the emotional response to tinnitus. Despite this common framing, it is not apparent from current literature that this is necessarily the main functional role of these structures in persistent tinnitus. Here, we highlight a different role that encompasses their most commonly implicated functional position within the brain-that is, as a memory system. We consider tin

Multi-omic atlas of the parahippocampal gyrus in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia worldwide, with a projection of 151 million cases by 2050. Previous genetic studies have identified three main genes associated with early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease, however this subtype accounts for less than 5% of total cases. Next-generation sequencing has been well established and holds great promise to assist in the development of novel therapeutics as well as biomarkers to prevent or slow the progression of this devastating disease. Here we present a public resource of functional genomic data from the parahippocampal g

Deactivation of the parahippocampal gyrus preceding auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Activation in a network of language-related regions has been reported during auditory verbal hallucinations. It remains unclear, however, how this activation is triggered. Identifying brain regions that show significant signal changes preceding auditory hallucinations might reveal the origin of these hallucinations. METHOD: Twenty-four patients with a psychotic disorder indicated the presence of auditory verbal hallucinations during 3-Tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging by squeezing a handheld balloon. A one-sample t test was performed to reveal groupwise activation during

Noninvasive in vivo demonstration of the connections of the human parahippocampal gyrus.

MR tractography techniques provide a method for noninvasively studying white matter pathways in vivo. In this study we have used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and the fast marching tractography (FMT) algorithm to plot the structural connectivity of the human parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) in 10 healthy subjects, using seed points selected in the anterior parahippocampal gyrus. Our results demonstrate connectivity between the parahippocampal gyrus and the anterior temporal lobe, orbitofrontal areas, posterior temporal lobe and extrastriate occipital lobe via the lingual and fusiform gyri. We also

The parahippocampal gyrus in Alzheimer's disease. Clinical and preclinical neuroanatomical correlates.

The human parahippocampal gyrus forms a large part of the limbic lobe along the ventromedial part of the temporal cortical mantle. It is a variable and complicated cortex in terms of structure, and the latter is aggravated further by interfaces with the anterior insula anteriorly and the cingulate gyrus and occipital lobe posteriorly. Additional complications relate to its lateral border with the temporal cortex and especially the sulcal configurations that define this junction. The rhinal sulcus, which separates parahippocampal and temporal cortices in other species, including the anthropoid

Validity of intraoperative ECoG in the parahippocampal gyrus as an indicator of hippocampal epileptogenicity.

PURPOSE: Intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) in the parahippocampal gyrus is sometimes used as a substitute for intraoperative ECoG in the hippocampus. This study aimed to elucidate the validity of parahippocampal ECoG as an indicator of hippocampal epileptogenicity. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 10 patients with drug-resistant unilateral mesial temporal lobe epilepsy who achieved Engel class I or II after anteromedial temporal lobectomy. Intraoperative ECoG was recorded in the parahippocampal gyrus and hippocampal alveus at sevoflurane concentrations of 1.5-3.0%. We sought to

Transtentorial Approach for Parahippocampal Gyrus Arteriovenous Malformation Resection: 3-Dimensional Operative Video.

Medial temporal basal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have complex anatomy. They usually drain to the basal vein of Rosenthal, and arterial feeders can arise from the anterior choroidal artery and its branches, or from the posterior cerebral artery. If the AVM is more posterior in the parahippocampal gyrus, there is a predominance of arterial feeders arising from P2P or P3 segments of the posterior cerebral artery. As posterior AVMs are difficult to reach using anterior approaches, the supracerebellar transtentorial approach provides a direct pathway to the malformation, allowing better vis

Morphological differences of intraneuronal ubiquitin-positive inclusions in the dentate gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus of motor neuron disease with dementia.

Semiquantitative morphological analysis of cerebral intraneuronal ubiquitin-positive tau-negative inclusions, a pathologic marker for motor neuron disease with dementia (MND-D), was performed in the dentate gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus of 20 clinicopathologically confirmed patients with MND-D. The forms of the inclusions were tentatively classified into three types: (i) C-type, consisting of relatively large and intensely stained crescent or circular structures; (ii) L-type, showing fine linear structures around the nuclei; and (iii) G-type, showing faintly stained granular structures. Sensorineural Hearing Loss Affects Functional Connectivity of the Auditory Cortex, Parahippocampal Gyrus and Inferior Prefrontal Gyrus in Tinnitus Patients.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus can interfere with a patient's speech discrimination, but whether tinnitus itself or the accompanying sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) causes this interference is still unclear. We analyzed event-related electroencephalograms (EEGs) to observe auditory-related brain function and explore the possible effects of SNHL on auditory processing in tinnitus patients. METHODS: Speech discrimination scores (SDSs) were recorded in 21 healthy control subjects, 24 tinnitus patients, 24 SNHL patients, and 27 patients with both SNHL and tinnitus. EEGs were collected under an oddball pa

Anomalous asymmetry of fusiform and parahippocampal gyrus gray matter in schizophrenia: A postmortem study.

OBJECTIVE: Anomalies of structure and asymmetry of the parahippocampal gyrus (origin of the perforant path input to the hippocampal formation in the medial temporal lobe) have been shown in some postmortem studies of schizophrenia, but previous studies have not included the fusiform gyrus (which may have a role in facial recognition and naming), adjacent to the parahippocampal gyrus on the ventral occipitotemporal surface. METHOD: The volumes of gray matter in the left and right parahippocampal and fusiform gyri were assessed with a stereological point-counting technique in the temporal lobes

Immediate visual reproduction negatively correlates with brain entropy of parahippocampal gyrus and inferior occipital gyrus in bipolar II disorder adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Brain entropy reveals complexity and irregularity of brain, and it has been proven to reflect brain complexity alteration in disease states. Previous studies found that bipolar disorder adolescents showed cognitive impairment. The relationship between complexity of brain neural activity and cognition of bipolar II disorder (BD-II) adolescents remains unclear. METHODS: Nineteen BD-II patients (14.63 ±1.57 years old) and seventeen age-gender matched healthy controls (HCs) (14.18 ± 1.51 years old) were enlisted. Entropy values of all voxels of the brain in resting-state functional MR

Magnetic resonance imaging volumetric measurements of the superior temporal gyrus, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, frontal and temporal lobes in late paraphrenia.

Quantified magnetic resonance measurements were made of superior temporal gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, hippocampal, frontal and temporal lobe volumes and of the planar area of the thalamus and basal ganglia structures in 47 late paraphrenic patients and 33 healthy elderly controls. The late paraphrenics were divided into 31 schizophrenics and 16 patients with delusional disorder according to ICD-10 guidelines. Patients with delusional disorder tended to have smaller left temporal volumes compared with control subjects and patients with schizophrenia, but this difference failed to reach accept

Volumetric stereotaxy and the supratentorial occipitosubtemporal approach in the resection of posterior hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Resection of intracranial tumors in the posterior hippocampus and the parahippocampal gyrus can be associated with significant morbidity because of the parenchymal resection and the cortical retraction often required in gaining access to this infrequently explored region. With the use of image guidance, the occipitosubtemporal (OST) approach requires neither lateral cortical resection nor the placement of brain retractors to gain surgical access to the posterior hippocampus and the parahippocampal gyrus, and this approach is associated with a high rate of gross total tumor resection

Temporal lobe gray matter in schizophrenia spectrum: a volumetric MRI study of the fusiform gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, and middle and inferior temporal gyri.

Although several brain morphologic studies have suggested abnormalities in the temporal regions to be a common indicator of vulnerability for the schizophrenia spectrum, less attention has been paid to temporal lobe structures other than the superior temporal gyrus or the medial temporal region. In this study, we investigated the volume of gray matter in the fusiform gyrus, the parahippocampal gyrus, the middle temporal gyrus, and the inferior temporal gyrus using magnetic resonance imaging in 39 schizotypal disorder patients, 65 schizophrenia patients, and 72 age and gender matched healthy co

The parahippocampal gyrus links the default-mode cortical network with the medial temporal lobe memory system.

The default-mode network (DMN) is a distributed functional-anatomic network implicated in supporting memory. Current resting-state functional connectivity studies in humans remain divided on the exact involvement of medial temporal lobe (MTL) in this network at rest. Notably, it is unclear to what extent the MTL regions involved in successful memory encoding are connected to the cortical nodes of the DMN during resting state. Our findings using functional connectivity MRI analyses of resting-state data indicate that the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) is the primary hub of the DMN in the MTL durin

[An autopsy case with recent memory disturbance, characterized by localized atrophy of parahippocampal gyrus, subiculum and amygdala].

We reported an autopsy case with recent memory disturbance, characterized by localized atrophy of parahippocampal gyrus, subiculum and amygdala. This patient initially exhibited recent memory disturbance at the age of 73. She was disoriented to time and place and immediately forgot having had a meal. At the age of 75, she was hospitalized because of progressive forgetfulness and congestive heart failure. One year later, she was admitted to our medical center. On admission, she was alert, but showed severe recent memory disturbance and disorientation to time and place. By contrast, she had neit

The functional connectivity between right parahippocampal gyrus and precuneus underlying the association between reward sensitivity and procrastination.

Procrastination has adverse effects on personal growth and social development. Behavior research has found reward sensitivity is positively correlated with procrastination. However, it remains unclear that the neural substrates underlie the relationship between reward sensitivity and procrastination. To address this issue, the present study used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) analyses to investigate the neural substrates underlying the association with reward sensitivity and procrastination in two independent samples (N1 = 388, N2 = 330). In Samp
