Pathological and parasitological characterization of infection by trematodes (Paramphistomatidae) in the large intestine of capybaras.

Gross and histological lesions caused by an intestinal parasite were described in three capybaras. The parasites presented a mean length of 14 mm and width of 7 mm, were round to oval or piriform, reddish and pedunculated, and adhered strongly to the mucosa of the large intestine. The intestinal mucosa at the parasite attachment site presented loss of surface epithelium and most glands, with replacement by fibrovascular proliferation that protruded from the mucosa and was involuted by the ventral sucker of the parasite. The lamina propria presented cellular debris, eosinophils, macrophages and

Stichorchis subtriquetrus (Digenea: Paramphistomatidae) from Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) in the Czech Republic.

Between March 2012 and April 2014, we performed post-mortem parasitological examinations of 11 Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758) from the basins of four main rivers (Dyje, Labe, Morava, Vltava) in the Czech Republic. The cause of death of five adult animals was unknown, three adult animals died after being hit by cars, while one young and one adult as a result of serious injuries and one juvenile male drowned. The trematode Stichorchis subtriquetrus (Rudolphi, 1814) Lühe, 1909 was only found in the caecum body and caecum apex of nine beavers (82%), with no significant differences

Unveiling a cryptic snail host of major trematodes in Europe: The susceptibility of Galba schirazensis (Lymnaeidae) to Calicophoron daubneyi (Paramphistomatidae) facilitates Fasciola hepatica (Fasciolidae).

Species of Lymnaeidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) are important intermediate hosts of major parasites some of which are responsible for zoonosis worldwide. Particularly liver and rumen flukes impact livestock production with increasing costs due to flukicide treatments. In Europe, a single snail species, Galba trunctaula, is considered as responsible for the transmission of Fasciola hepatica and Calicophoron daubneyi, two trematode species with almost identical transmission cycles. However, the occurrence of a second cryptic and largely overlooked Galba species in Europe raises questions about the

Molecular identification of Pseudodiscus collinsi from wild Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) based on ITS-2.

Domestic and wild animals can contract amphistomosis, a disease caused by digenetic trematodes belonging to the superfamily Paramphistomoidea. The importance of these flukes is underestimated worldwide due to their ubiquity and abundance among hosts. Pseudodiscus collinsi is a member of the family Paramphistomatidae that infects the colon of equines and elephants. In the present study, the flukes were recovered from the colon of a dead wild Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus). The flukes were stained using acetyl alum carmine and morphologically identified as P. collinsi based on the pre

Natural prevalence in Cuban populations of the lymnaeid snail Galba cubensis infected with the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica: small values do matter.

Natural infections of lymnaeid snails by Fasciola hepatica are of primary importance to study transmission. Also, infected snails in the field can be used to explore the existing compatibility in host-parasite interactions. This paper aimed to describe the infection rate of Galba cubensis populations in fasciolosis transmission areas. Eight sites were sampled in western Cuba and 24 infected snails at six sites were found. The mean prevalence was 2.94% and the maximum value was 11.4%. The intensity of parasite infection was assessed as the number of rediae inside a single snail. High variation

[Paramphistomidosis - an overview on epidemiology and clinical signs].

Paramphistosis is a globally occurring parasitic disease in various ruminants caused by a range of rumen flukes (including Paramphistomum cervi, Calicophoron daubneyi and Paramphistomum leydeni). In Europe, local occurrences of rumen fluke infection in domestic and wild ruminants have been described for decades. There is now evidence that paramphistomidosis is gaining in importance, because high prevalence rates were reported in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Belgium and The Netherlands. Current prevalence data from Germany are lacking. In recent investigations in northern Germany

Optimized conditions for the in vitro excystment of Calicophoron daubneyi metacercariae.

Paramphistomosis, caused by Calicophoron daubneyi, is an emerging infection of ruminants throughout Western Europe. Despite its prevalence, many questions remain regarding the basic biology of this parasite and how it interacts with its host. Consequently, there is a need to develop methods to study C. daubneyi in vitro to improve our understanding of rumen fluke biology. Towards this, we aimed to identify a suitable protocol for in vitro excystment of C. daubneyi metacercariae. Six methods that have been used to excyst metacercariae from a number of trematode species were tested with C. daubn

Amphistomes.

Amphistomes, commonly referred to as 'stomach' or 'rumen' flukes because of the localization of these flukes in the stomach of ruminants, are digenetic trematodes distinguished by the absence of an oral sucker and the position of the ventral sucker or acetabulum at the posterior end of the body. The body is characterized by a leaf-like fleshy structure, pink or red with a large posterior sucker. Amphistomes are an important group of parasites since they cause 'amphistomiasis' (variously known as paramphistomosis/amphistomosis), a serious disease of great economic importance in ruminants worldw

Geographic origin of Explanatum explanatum (Creplin, 1847) Fukui, 1929 detected from domestic water buffaloes in Sri Lanka.

The adult stage of Explanatum explanatum has economic importance in the production of ruminants, especially water buffaloes. This species has been widely reported in the Indian sub-continent. Recently, molecular analyses to reveal the dispersal route of this species were performed in Bangladesh, Nepal, and India. In the present study, we focused on E. explanatum distributed in Sri Lanka. A total of 52 flukes were collected from water buffaloes in Sri Lanka and identified as E. explanatum based on the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Exploring medicinal plants for antiparamphistomiasis: A scoping review of pharmacological insights and methodologies.

Paramphistomiasis, a neglected infectious disease affecting ruminants, leads to significant productivity losses. The limitations of current antitrematodal agents and emerging anthelmintic resistance highlight the need for alternative treatments, including those derived from medicinal plants. Pharmacological screening plays a crucial role in the discovery and development of natural products for antiparamphistomiasis. This scoping review summarises the methodological aspects used in pharmacological screening studies of medicinal plants for antiparamphistomiasis. Eligible studies included origina

Occurrence of paramphistomosis (Trematoda: Digenea) in sheep in northern Peru.

Cajamarca is an important Andean livestock production area located in northern Peru and at the same time endemic in a poorly studied disease known as paramphistomosis. The purpose of this research was to calculate the frequency of paramphistomids in sheep (Ovis aries) slaughtered in the Camal Municipal de Cajamarca, located in the city of Cajamarca. Between the months of February to September 2019, 386 samples of rumen-reticulum were collected that were later classified by age and origin of the animals. Transferred to the laboratory, the stomach contents were emptied; they were examined meticu

New approach to molecular characterization of Paramphistomum cervi and Carmyerius gregarius and comparative analyses with selected trematodes.

The two ruminant parasites, Paramphistomum cervi and Carmyerius gregarius, were collected from fresh-slaughtered native cattle at local abattoirs in Sadat district, Menoufia province and identified morphologically, then molecularly by sequencing the nucleotides of 18S ribosomal RNA gene (18S rRNA). The nucleotide sequences of the two isolates were 456 (P. cervi) and 401 bases for (C. gregarius). The data were used along with those of several other helminth species from the GenBank to identify these two species genetically. The nucleotide sequences were aligned using multiple sequence alignment

Cercarial productivity of redial generations in single-miracidium infections of Lymnaea truncatula with Paramphistomum daubneyi or Fasciola hepatica.

Single-miracidium infections of Lymnaea truncatula with Paramphistomum daubneyi or with Fasciola hepatica were carried out under laboratory conditions to count free rediae, their germinal embryos, and to determine the cercarial productivity of each redial generation. In snails infected by P. daubneyi, the cercariae were produced by the first (8.7 cercariae per redia) and second (8.9 per redia) generations. At day 63 post-exposure, they corresponded, respectively, to 53.9% and 46.1% of cercariae produced by all rediae. In snails infected by F. hepatica, the majority of cercariae were produced b

Complex morphological characterization and morphometric-molecular discrimination of two paramphistome species co-infecting cattle, Orthocoelium sp. and Paramphistomum epiclitum.

Co-infection by two paramphistome species, Orthocoelium sp. and Paramphistomum epiclitum, is found in cattle in Thailand. The morphological features of these and other paramphistomes under a light microscope are similar, resulting in misidentification and misdiagnosis. We classified these paramphistomes into three morphological variation types, namely Orthocoelium sp., P. epiclitum MV1 (immature), and P. epiclitum MV2 (matured). Ten morphological characteristics were investigated, and the values were transformed into 25 ratio criteria for statistical investigation. Morphometric analysis can cl
