The objective of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of (111)In-DTPA-octreotide (OC) for in vivo scintigraphic imaging of these relatively uncommon tumors. Thirteen patients (9 males, 4 females, mean age 59 years) with known sarcomatous lesions were studied. All patients had known lesions as demonstrated by previous investigation with other modalities, e.g. CAT, MRI. Following intravenous injection of 10 microg of OC labeled with 2.8-4.2 mCi (111)In, planar imaging was done at 6 +/- 1 and 22 +/- 2 h, respectively. Histologic verification was obtained in all cases, either from fin

The clinical data of two adolescents with unilateral nasal cavity neoplasm were analyzed. Both were male, one was 14-year-old and the other was 17. Both were complained of unilateral nasal obstruction and nasal discharge; The course of disease of the former was one month ,and that of the latter was three month; both were found neoformation in unilateral nasal cavity in medical examination. Occupying lesion in unilateral nasal cavity and sinus were demonstrated in CT scan of two cases. Endoscopy surgery were operated in both cases, incisal opening in labiogingival groove was added in the latter

Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma (SNTCS) is a very rare and aggressive malignant neoplasm histologically characterized by the combination of one or many components of epithelial and mesenchymal elements. Here, we report a SNTCS in a 60-year-old man involving posterior nasal and nasopharyngeal wall extending into left ethmoidal sinus. The patient complained of bleeding from nose, nasal obstruction, and generalized weakness for last two months. Tumor was completely removed by Caldwell-Luc operation and postoperative radiation therapy was given. The follow-up of the patient for two years has shown

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the symptoms, factors relating to recurrences, the styles of the rescue operation and the reconstructive methods of the surgical defects in patients with recurrent nasal and paranasal sinus neoplasms.
METHODS: Excluding the primary neoplasm, only patients with recurrent tumors and suitable for rescue operations entered the group. Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the survival probability.
RESULTS: Twenty-five patients receiving rescue operations from 1993 to 2002 who met the above inclusion criteria were reviewed. The age ranged from 13 - 66 years. All the pa

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial resection (CFR) has been regarded as the gold standard for paranasal sinus and nasal cavity (PNSNC) neoplasms. The improvement of surgical procedures has been ongoing in recent years. We analyzed the clinical curative effects of the function-preservation therapy that was mainly using nasal endoscopic surgery along with appropriate radiotherapy and chemotherapy as applicable.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of factors that influence the survival time of the 28 patients with PNSNC neoplasms who underwent nasal endoscopic surgery. All patients with tumor l

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Endoscopic sinus surgery has become widely accepted as the standard of treatment for chronic inflammatory diseases of the paranasal sinuses unresponsive to medical treatment. With increased skill with endoscopic surgical technique, advanced technologies such as intraoperative imaging systems, and a better understanding of the complex anatomy of the paranasal sinuses and surrounding vital structures, many otolaryngologists have increasingly applied their expertise in endoscopic sinus surgery to the resection of nasal and sinus neoplasms. The following represents a review of t

Osteomas are uncommon, slow-growing, benign osteogenic neoplasms that arise most frequently in the craniofacial skeleton. (1,2) Osteoma is the most common benign tumor of the nose and paranasal sinuses and the most common neoplasm of the frontal sinus. (3-5) Paranasal sinus osteomas originate in the sinus wall, fill the lumen with well-defined mature osseous tissue, and occasionally extend into the orbit where they give rise to orbital signs and symptoms. Osteomas most commonly become symptomatic in the second to fifth decade in life, but orbital involvement has rarely been reported in patient

OBJECTIVES: This was a systematic review of studies on the use of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for paranasal sinus diseases. The applications of DWI were analyzed along with the main results, and conclusions were obtained by the investigators.
STUDY DESIGN: Databases were searched using the keyword "diffusion" combined with "sinonasal," "paranasal sinus," "maxillary sinus," "frontal sinus," "ethmoid sinus," and "sphenoid sinus," including only articles that were published from 2008 to 2018. Only original English language studies with sinonasal disease samples were selected.
RESULTS: Sixt

Paranasal sinus tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms (with paranasal schwannomas being a rare subtype) that are often present with non-specific symptoms, such as nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Thus, early diagnosis is crucial for optimal management. This study presents 2 cases of paranasal schwannomas, detailing their clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, and treatment approaches. Both patients underwent endoscopic sinus surgery with successful tumor excision and had no significant complications or recurrences during follow-up. Diagnosis was based on a combination of clinical e

In a study of 256 non-epithelial neoplasms involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, only two lesions were classified as adipose tissue tumors (one lipoma and one liposarcoma). The lipoma was found incidentally when tissue removed from the maxillary sinus was studied histologically, the patient having been treated with a Caldwell-Luc procedure for maxillary sinusitis. The liposarcoma produced a large mass involving the nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, ethmoid area, hard palate and maxillary, temporal and sphenoid bones. The tumor extended into the cranial cavity and eventual

Meningioma is a common neoplasm of the central nervous system; however, primary extracranial meningioma of the paranasal sinus, especially the maxillary sinus, is rare. We report a case of primary extracranial meningioma (fibrous type) of the maxillary sinus and present a literature review of the imaging features that correlate with fibrous meningioma.

The paranasal sinus cancers comprise about 10% of all head and neck neoplasms. There are 80% of SCC among them. Paranasal sinus cancer is difficult to treat with surgery due to the anatomic integration of sinuses into the cranial base. Suborbital approach allows to simultaneous resection of the tumor from sinuses and anterior cranial fossa. The excision of the nasofrontal bone lamella gives a chance to orbital decompression and optic nerve decompression as well and opening the anterior cranial fossa through posterior wall of the frontal sinus. The goal of the study was to present cases showing

We report a case of a 66-year-old male with diffuse infiltration of neoplasm from the paranasal sinuses to the orbit and left cerebral hemisphere, associated with prominent edema. Initial complaints were headache and swelling of the forehead, which were followed by progressive symptoms, such as epistaxis, dacryops, and severe pains. Neuroimaging showed marked invasion of a neoplasm from the left paranasal sinuses into the intracranial space and to the frontal skull. Radical removal of the neoplasm and left orbital content with reconstruction of the anterior skull base using musculocutaneous fl

Malignant neoplasms of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity are rare, comprising only 3% of all head and neck malignancies. This includes both primary sinonasal neoplasms and metastatic disease. We present the case of a patient with a maxillary soft tissue swelling, which proved to be a rare malignant tumor of maxillary sinus origin, a sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma.

Invasive aspergillosis usually affects immunocompromised hosts with variable manifestations depending on the site of infection. In this article, we present two cases of invasive Aspergillosis in two non-immunocompromised patients; both cases had a paranasal sinuses infection, with intraorbital and intracranial extension, requiring surgery and antifungal treatment with Voriconazole. These cases were initially diagnosed as paranasal sinus neoplasms. However, the pathology and microbiology studies revealed invasive fungal infection by Aspergillus flavus.

Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses is a slowly expanding benign lesion developing when there is impeded physiological drainage of the mucous produced by the epithelial lining of the paranasal sinuses, at the sinus ostium, which is an opening that connects the sinus to the nasal cavity. Aetiologies of ostial occlusion include infection, allergy, trauma, previous surgery, benign neoplasm (osteoma or fibrous dysplasia), and malignant or metastatic tumours. Mucoceles commonly develop in the frontal sinus (70-80 per cent), followed by the ethmoid (25 per cent), frontoethmoidal (10-14 per cent), and
