Childhood parental death has frequently been linked with adult mental disorders--mostly depression. The authors found no association with psychiatric diagnosis among 72 inpatients who had experienced the death of a parent when they were children, compared with 460 other patients in the Chestnut Lodge Follow-Up Study. The patients with a childhood parental death did, however, have significantly greater family pathology and impaired social and heterosexual functioning. These results refute the view that childhood parental death is singularly casual of adult psychopathology but support its role i

Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke is a major risk factor associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and the risk has increased despite continued advice against this practice. Evidence from the UK suggests the prevalence of maternal smoking during pregnancy has risen amongst SIDS mothers (from 50% to 80%) when the rate amongst expectant mothers in the general population has fallen (from 30% to 20%) confirming pooled estimates from recent studies of a four-fold risk. An additional risk from postnatal exposure has also been identified; increasing with the number of smokers in the househ

In this report, the authors present two cases of accidental death in children of addicted parents. In the first case, the child was left unattended at home while the mother went out to buy cocaine. She was arrested and detained with no mention of the unsupervised child. The cause of death in this case was determined to be starvation and dehydration. In the second case, a child mistakenly received a methadone suppository by her father instead of an antipyretic suppository. Toxicological analysis of the femoral blood revealed methadone at a concentration of 1.2 mg/L. The cause of death was deter

Every day, in the United States, children are removed from their homes and placed into state supervised out-of-home care because of concerns around their safety. These children enter care as a result of child abuse, child neglect, abandonment or some other reasons. Lost in most discussions of out-of-home care is the role that parental incarceration and parental death have on the trajectory of children through the child welfare system. In order to address this gap in the literature, the present study aims to compare youth in foster care as a result of parental death or youth in foster care as a

BACKGROUND: Following a perinatal death, a formal standardised multi-disciplinary review should take place, to learn from the death of a baby and facilitate improvements in future care. It has been recommended that bereaved parents should be offered the opportunity to give feedback on the care they have received and integrate this feedback into the perinatal mortality review process. However, the MBRRACE-UK Perinatal Confidential Enquiry (2015) found that only one in 20 cases parental concerns were included in the review. Although guidance suggests parental opinion should be sought, little evi

AIM: To clarify the possible role of accidental asphyxiation/suffocation for infants in shared sleeping situations.
METHODS: As it has recently been shown that there is an association between maternal obesity and sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) an index was calculated by dividing parental body mass index (BMI) by the shared sleeping surface area.
RESULTS: A much higher index was derived for an obese individual on a narrow sleeping area such as a sofa (50) compared to a thin adult on a queen-sized mattress (5).
CONCLUSION: The index may be a way of semi-quantitating high, and low, risk

Numerous articles stress the unique problems of mourning an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related death and suggest psychotherapeutic interventions. However, no studies have been conducted that identify what differs in the grief process when the death was AIDS-associated and whether the extensive clinical and research literature on bereavement can be generalized to AIDS. This paper focuses on a bereaved population that has suffered AIDS-related loss--the uninfected children of mothers who die of AIDS, a group that has been referred to as "AIDS orphans." We begin with a brief discus

CONTEXT: Sudden infant death syndrome is the leading cause of postneonatal death in developed countries. Little is known about risks linked with parental mental illness per se or how such risks are modified by specific psychiatric conditions and by maternal vs paternal psychopathological abnormalities.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate cause-specific postneonatal death, including sudden infant death syndrome, in infants whose parents had been admitted as psychiatric inpatients.
DESIGN: National cohort study.
SETTING: The entire Danish population. Patients All of the singleton live births registered

The authors studied the incidence of parental loss among 163 gender-disordered patients and an equal number of psychiatric control patients. An unusually high number of gender-disordered patients had lost their fathers, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood. Many of these patients showed shifts in gender identity in the year after loss, and during that period many requested surgical sex reassignment for the first time. Changes in the patient's relationship with the remaining parent and experiences related to loss of the father are discussed.

The death of a twin hospitalised in neonatal intensive care presents several issues that the children's nurse must take into account. Identifying the elements which characterise the issues around supporting families confronted at the same time with the grieving and bonding processes enables suitable actions to be put in place.

This study examined the effects of two potentially crisis-producing experiences, parental divorce or death, on the school adjustment of young children. Children with such "crisis" histories were found to show greater overall school maladaptation than children without such histories. Children of divorce had significantly more acting-out problems than noncrisis controls or death children and those with histories of parental death more serious shy-anxious problems than the other groups. These effects were stable across (a) independent year samples, (b) referred and "normal" nonreferred groups, an

OBJECTIVES: To characterise neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) parents' grieving process across time and to identify their perspectives on the healthcare providers' actions that acted as facilitators or barriers to the grieving process in the short (3-9 months) and longer term (18-24 months).
DESIGN: Longitudinal mixed-methods study combining standardised grief and care satisfaction scales with qualitative data collected through semistructured interviews. The qualitative component was guided by an interpretive description approach, which is well-suited for generating clinically relevant insi

The impact of parental death and the efficacy of a coping-skills intervention were examined on the adjustment of 211 adolescent children of parents with HIV/AIDS (PWH) over a 2-year period. During the follow-up period, 35% of the PWH died. Using longitudinal structural equation model, controlling for prior measures of adjustment at baseline, the authors found that children of deceased PWH reported significantly more emotional distress and problem behaviors 2 years later. Youth randomized with their parent to a coping-skills intervention reported significantly fewer problem behaviors and sexual

Pediatric cancer treatment and child death impose significant financial strain on families-yet we do not know which financial supports are needed. We sought to assess this through a survey conducted 4-5 years following a child's death. Parents rated the usefulness of six financial supports and identified additional required supports. Financial needs included paid time off work (54%), funeral/burial costs (46%), rent/mortgage assistance (37%), support for medical bills (30%), and food (28%). Additional financial needs included travel expenses, paid housing, and grief therapy. Parents emphasized

BACKGROUND: Early parental death is one of the most stressful childhood life events and may influence subsequent psychological health. We investigated the association between early parental loss and risk of hospitalization for an affective disorder in adulthood.
METHODS: Our nationwide register-based cohort study comprises 1,225,660 people born in Denmark in 1970-1990, of whom 138,893 experienced the death of a parent before the age of 30 years. Follow-up for hospitalization for an affective disorder in the period 1990-2009 yielded 15,261,058 person-years and 19,867 hospitalizations for affec

OBJECTIVES: To examine the psychiatric antecedents that put parents at risk for early death, and the psychological sequelae of bereavement in offspring and caregivers.
DESIGN: A population-based study.
SETTING: Bereaved families were recruited through the coroner's records and by advertisement. Control families were recruited by random-digit dialing and advertisement.
PARTICIPANTS: Families with biological offspring from 7 to 25 years of age in which 1 parent died of suicide, accident, or sudden natural death were included (n = 140). Controls (n = 99) had 2 living parents and their biologic

Traditional care for mothers after stillbirth has been based on untested assumptions about appropriate parental behavior. To evaluate these assumptions, 165 families cared for by the Perinatal Mortality Counseling Program because of stillbirth or immediate neonatal death were offered a series of choices about their care, including how they wished to deal with their baby's death. Parental decisions were compared with selected demographic and obstetric features considered as underlying those decisions that traditionally have been made by physicians or the hospital staff. The authors found that p

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: To identify and assess the effect of support interventions focused on psychological, social, and emotional outcomes for bereaved parents (including birth and non-birthing mothers, fathers, partners) and family members of parents (e.g. grandparents; siblings) who have experienced stillbirth or neonatal death.

The death of a child around the time of birth is one of the most profoundly distressing events any parent will experience. These deaths are not uncommon, but are often hidden, along with the grief of mothers, fathers and families. Social stigma and negative attitudes are inextricably linked to underreporting of babies’ deaths in low- and middle-income countries. A failure to recognise the value of these lost lives leads to disenfranchised grief and diminished preventive efforts to reduce stillbirth and neonatal deaths. Acknowledging these deaths to bring them ‘out of the shadows’17 and compass
