Perceived Social Support, Parental Notification, and Parental Engagement after Pelvic Inflammatory Disease among Urban Adolescent and Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Urban adolescent and young adult women often require adult support throughout their transition to adulthood particularly regarding seeking healthcare. While confidentiality is crucial feature of care delivery, successful adherence to treatment can be multi-factorial. The purpose of this study is to determine factors associated with parental notification and engagement in self-care of young women diagnosed with Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). METHODS: This study utilizes data from 187 participants in the Technology Enhanced Community Health Nursing (TECH-N) study, a randomized c

Feasibility of an Online, Interactive Body Mass Index Parental Notification Letter (e-BMI).

School-based body mass index (BMI) screening is required in 50% of states with parent notification letters distributed among 11 of those states. Additional research is needed to effectively communicate screening results to parents. We conducted a pilot investigation of parent acceptability of an electronic, interactive BMI parental notification letter (e-BMI) along with the feasibility of implementing an e-BMI letter in the school setting. In addition, we assessed parental attitudes and practices regarding their child's weight-related behaviors. Electronic letter distribution and parent receip

Abortion-seeking minors' views on the Illinois parental notification law: a qualitative study.

CONTEXT: Thirty-seven states have laws in effect that mandate parental involvement in adolescent abortion decisions. Little is known about minors' opinions of parental involvement laws. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 minors presenting for an abortion at one of three Chicago-area clinics in 2010. Interviewers described the Illinois parental notification law (which was passed in 1995 but is not in effect because of legal challenges) and a corresponding judicial bypass option to the minors and asked their opinions about them. Interviews were coded and analyzed using content

Deanda v. Becerra: The Implications of the New Legal Attack on Longstanding Title X Policy.

This commentary analyzes the recent attacks on adolescents' access to contraception by religious and parental rights activists and the conservative legal movement. Specifically, we focus on Deanda v. Becerra, a 2024 case in which the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals held that a Texas state law requiring parental consent for minors to access contraception is not preempted by a longstanding policy under Title X of the federal Public Health Service Act that prohibits clinics receiving federal funding from requiring parental consent or notification. We first describe existing laws governing minors'

Variability in Notification of Positive Newborn Screening Results for Sickle Cell Trait Across the United States.

Universal in the United States (US) since 2006, newborn screening (NBS) programs for sickle cell disease (SCD) allow for early identification of the disease and, as an unintentional byproduct, identification of sickle cell trait (SCT). Unlike other carrier states, SCT is highly prevalent and is found in nearly 3 million Americans, which results in important reproductive implications. Currently, all NBS programs in the US are responsible for their own policies regarding SCT notification, and little is known about how SCT notification practices are performed and how these practices vary across N

Understanding and improving health education among first-time parents of infants with sickle cell anemia in Alabama: a mixed methods approach.

With the increase in access to medical information, parents can acquire health information from multiple sources. An understanding of parents' reactions to a newborn infant's diagnosis of sickle cell anemia and how they acquire knowledge can identify parent beliefs and preferences about the process of sickle cell education. This study utilized a sequential exploratory mixed methods design. First, qualitative interviews were conducted with 8 parents of infants with sickle cell anemia to understand the process of health education. Second, quantitative surveys were conducted with 22 other parents

Reasons for Childhood Vaccine Refusal: A Cross-Sectional Study in South-Eastern Türkiye.

Background/Objectives: Vaccine hesitancy has intensified worldwide, and measles and pertussis have resurged across the WHO European Region. In Türkiye, a regulation introduced in May 2024 made documentation of every parental refusal mandatory, rendering 2025 the first calendar year for which provincial refusal data can be considered systematically ascertained. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, registry-based cross-sectional study of all vaccine refusal notifications submitted to the Batman Provincial Health Directorate between 1 January and 31 December 2025, covering all six districts of

Parental monitoring for type 1 diabetes in genetically at-risk young children: The TEDDY study.

OBJECTIVE: We examined parental diabetes monitoring behaviors in a cohort of children at increased genetic risk for type 1 diabetes. We hypothesized that being informed of a positive islet autoantibody (IA) would increase monitoring behaviors. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study follows 8676 children with high-risk human leucocyte antigen-DQ genotypes from birth to age 15, including general population (GP) children and those with a first-degree relative (FDR) with diabetes. Data on parental monitoring behaviors were solicited year

Megan's Law and its impact on community re-entry for sex offenders.

Community notification, known as "Megan's Law," provides the public with information about known sex offenders in an effort to assist parents and potential victims to protect themselves from dangerous predators. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of community notification on the lives of registered sex offenders. Two hundred and thirty-nine sex offenders in Connecticut and Indiana were surveyed. The negative consequences that occurred with the greatest frequency included job loss, threats and harassment, property damage, and suffering of household members. A minority of sex of

Increase of vaccination coverage by mass media and individual approach: intensified measles, mumps, and rubella prevention program in Finland.

In the 1970s, mass vaccination projects were started in various parts of the world against measles and congenital rubella, with eradication as the final goal. In many developing and industrial countries, including Finland, the elimination of measles failed because of low vaccination coverage. In Finland, a combined measles, mumps, and rubella (Virivac) vaccination program was started in 1982. Computerized recording of the vaccinated children was considered necessary and was integrated with the population registry to identify the hard-to-reach families. Several interventions improved compliance

Parental medical neglect in the treatment of adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Although childhood sexual abuse has been a frequent focus of research on eating disorders, other forms of maltreatment have been less commonly reported. Parental medical neglect is examined in this study as having serious consequences for the treatment and prognosis of patients with anorexia nervosa. METHOD: Two case studies illustrate parental interference with treatment in which Child Protective Services (CPS) had to be involved in compliance with state law. Two adolescent females who were admitted for treatment for anorexia nervosa are presented. RESULTS: In both cases, the par

Notifying patients exposed to blood products associated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: theoretical risk for real people.

BACKGROUND: In July 1995 the Canadian Red Cross Society recalled blood products because of the hypothetical risk of transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) through those blood products. The authors undertook a survey to determine the views of patients and parents of patients about being notified that they or their child had received such blood products. METHODS: The study population consisted of 528 transfusion recipients, of whom 453 (85.8%) were under 16 years of age, notified by the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, of the CJD recalls in 1995 and 1996. Families attending an info

Parental awareness, attitudes and decision-making of off-label use in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate parental awareness, acceptance, refusal rate and influencing factors of off-label use in children, aiming to provide evidence for optimising informed consent and physician-parent communication. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Elsevier ScienceDirect, CNKI, Wanfang and VIP from inception to March 2026 for observational, mixed-methods and qualitative studies on parental awareness, attitudes and decision-making about off-label use in children. A random-effects single-group rate meta-analysis pooled awareness and refusal rates; conditional accepta

Notification of patients with acute flaccid paralysis since certification of Australia as polio-free.

OBJECTIVE: Surveillance of patients presenting with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) is the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended method for the detection of incident cases of poliovirus infection. Australia was certified free of circulating poliovirus in 2000 but is required to continue AFP surveillance until global certification. Although Australia reached the WHO nominated surveillance target in 2000 and 2001, it was not reached in 2002. Notification rates between states have been variable. We aim to investigate the difference in notification rates by state to determine whether different

Parental involvement in minors' abortion decisions.

In a 1991 study based on a nationally representative sample of more than 1,500 unmarried minors having an abortion, 61% of the respondents said that one or both of their parents (usually the mother) knew about the abortion. Only 26% of the respondents said their father knew about the abortion; furthermore, 57% of the mothers who knew about their daughter's pregnancy did not tell her father. In this study, which was conducted in states without parental involvement laws in effect, about 75% of the parents who knew about the pregnancy had been told by the daughter herself, and the great majority

Parental Involvement Policies for Minors Seeking Abortion in the Southeast and Quality of Care.

INTRODUCTION: Thirty-seven states require minors seeking abortion to involve a parent, either through notification or consent. Little research has examined how implementation of these laws affect service delivery and quality of care for those who involve a parent. METHODS: Between May 2018 and September 2019, in-depth interviews were conducted with 34 staff members involved in scheduling, counseling, and administration at abortion facilities in three Southeastern states. Interviews explored procedures for documenting parental involvement, minors' and parents' reactions to requirements, and ch
