Arterial CO2 partial pressure affects diaphragmatic function.

The purpose of this study was to examine in an in vivo preparation acute variations of PCO2 on diaphragmatic contractility. Plaster casts were snugly fit around the abdomen of six open-chested dogs, moving the abdominal contents rostrally. Diaphragmatic contractions against this very fixed load in response to phrenic nerve stimulation (supramaximal voltage at 1, 20, 50, and 80 Hz) or during spontaneous inspiratory efforts were virtually isometric (quasi-isometric). Transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) measured by an abdominal balloon was used as an index of diaphragmatic contractility. Arterial P

Transcutaneous partial pressure of oxygen after surgical wounds.

Transcutaneous partial pressure of oxygen (TcPO2) predicts wound healing in critical ischemia. However, no studies have controlled for the effect of wounds on TcPO2. In this study, in 24 hip or knee arthroplasty cases without vascular disease, TcPO2 was measured preoperatively at the incision site, contralaterally, and at a reference site on the chest wall. The measurements were repeated at 2 days and 2 months postoperatively and compared. TcPO2, normal preoperatively, decreased at all sites on the second postoperative day (p < 0.001), with a trend toward a greater decrease at the wound (p = 0

Periodic breathing induced by arterial oxygen partial pressure oscillations.

The Grodins model of respiratory control (Grodins et al., 1967) describes cardio-respiratory control for a lung with homogeneous gas concentrations. In this study we modify the Grodins model to take account of the inhomogeneities in gas concentration within the lung that are seen in many subjects with respiratory illnesses. This modification has the effect of lowering arterial oxygen partial pressure significantly. We investigate the effect on cardio-respiratory control of this low arterial oxygen signal and find that the governing equations may be reduced to a single delay-differential equati

Partial pressure of ammonia versus ammonia in hepatic encephalopathy.

Ammonia is considered the major pathogenetic factor of cerebral dysfunction in hepatic failure. The correlation between total plasma ammonia and the severity of hepatic encephalopathy (HE), however, is variable. Because ammonia that is present in gaseous form readily enters the brain, the correlation with the grade of HE of the pH-dependent partial pressure of gaseous ammonia (pNH(3)) could be better than that of total arterial ammonia levels. To test this hypothesis, 56 cirrhotic patients with acute episodes of clinical HE (median age, 54 years; range, 21-75) were studied by clinical examinat

Growth and product formation of actinomycetes cultivated at increased total pressure and oxygen partial pressure.

Influence of pressure (P) and oxygen partial pressure (PO2) on cultivation of various Streptomyces spp. and Micromonospora purpurea was examined in pressurized air-lift and stirred tank fermenters. The maximum PO2 was 2100 mbar. Growth and product formation of all cultures tested were markedly influenced by PO2 higher than 1000 mbar. There is evidence that wild strains are more oxygen tolerant than production strains. At a certain PO2 the metabolic activities of all cultures were inhibited. However, results obtained with S. aureofaciens and S. rimosus indicated an increase in specific product

Intrapelvic pressure monitoring in the partially obstructed porcine kidney.

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of urinary obstruction in newborns and infants remains difficult because the diagnostic studies available at present are fraught with many problems. It is our premise that precise measurement of renal pelvic pressures under physiologic conditions in patients with urinary tract dilation will allow diagnosis of obstruction and prediction of further renal damage. This study evaluates an intrapelvic pressure monitoring system. METHODS: Four porcine subjects had partial ureteropelvic junction obstruction created surgically; two subjects were used as controls. Doppler ultr

Pressure and flow measurements in the partially obstructed ureter of the rat.

Hydronephrosis in man or experimental animals can be caused by an increased ureteral flow resistance. This condition can in the long run prove harmful to renal function. We compared two ways of measuring ureteral flow resistance in animals with and without a ureteral hindrance, the hindrance being induced by embedding the ureter in the psoas muscle. One needle connected via catheters to a pressure recording system and another connected to a pump system were introduced through the parenchyma into the renal pelvis. Experiments were carried out with two procedures: 1) infusion of 0.5 ml x min-1 o

Transcutaneous partial oxygen pressure assessment of the ischemic lower limb.

As a result of these studies, it can be concluded that the TCpO2 is a reliable indicator of the state of perfusion of the skin in both the healthy and ischemic legs and can be used to predict the healing potential if amputation is performed. The most meaningful reading is obtained at 10 centimeters below knee anteriorly. The critical value is approximately 35 millimeters of mercury, since the pO2 value for below-knee amputations performed upon most patients with a 10 centimeter below knee amputation was less than this, further surgical treatment was required, while all patients with values abo

Optimal central venous pressure during partial hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Low central venous pressure (CVP) affects hemodynamic stability and tissue perfusion. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the optimal CVP during partial hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Ninety-seven patients who underwent partial hepatectomy for HCC had their CVP controlled at a level of 0 to 5 mmHg during hepatic parenchymal transection. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) was maintained, if possible, at 90 mmHg or higher. Hepatitis B surface antigen was positive in 90 patients (92.8%) and cirrhosis in 84 patients (86.6%). Pringle maneuver was used rout

Non-invasive measurement of the superficial cortical oxygen partial pressure.

We present a non invasive fluorescein based method to measure and visualise the partial oxygen pressure of the rat cortex in a 2D picture. We studied 10 Wistar rats. A trepanation was done over the hemisphere and the dura was opened. A PMMA cylinder with a calibrated optical membrane was fixed over the surface of the brain. The CCD camera with the light source is placed over the cylinder. This allows the generation of two-dimensional maps of the pO2 pressure. Using the white light picture we defined regions of interest (ROI) in an artery, vein, parenchyma and an overall ROI. For every ROI a me

Arterial oxygen partial pressure and cardiovascular surgery in elderly patients.

Arterial blood gas assessment is still routinely performed in candidates for a cardiovascular surgery. Whether sampling arterial blood is useful in an elderly patient with a near normal lung function and who meets all other criteria for operability, is unknown. Therefore, it was our purpose to provide reference values for arterial blood gases in these patients and to examine how the level of arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO(2)) might influence postoperative outcome. We retrospectively studied arterial blood gases in 201 patients, aged 70-92 years with normal or near normal ventilatory fun

Detection of airway CO2 partial pressure to avoid esophageal intubation.

During endotracheal intubation, checking the position of endotracheal tube is important in order to avoid accidental esophageal intubation. Exhaled CO2 pressures of 50 emergent intubation attempts were recorded in our pediatric intensive unit to evaluate the efficacy of capnography in the early detection of esophageal intubation. Adjustment of the tube position was performed when indicated. In successful endotracheal intubation, the end-tidal CO2 pressures (PetCO2) ranged from 10 mmHg to 80 mmHg with typical respiratory phasic waveforms. In cases of inadvertent esophageal intubation, the PetCO

Investigating The Effect Of Systolic And Diastolic Arterial Pressures On Mean Pressure Through Partial Information Decomposition.

Mean arterial pressure (MAP) is a critical haemodynamic parameter, reflecting the average pressure during the cardiac cycle and serving as a determinant of tissue perfusion. Despite its clinical importance, MAP is often estimated using empirical formulas in routine practice, which may lead to inaccuracies. While previous studies have highlighted MAP's dynamic interactions with other physiological signals, the fast, within-beat relationships between MAP and blood pressure measurements - systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and diastolic arterial pressure (DAP) - remain underexplored. Residual Sterile Muscle Fibrosis Following Partial Debridement of a Pressure Ulcer.

Pressure ulcers are severe medical conditions, often stemming from inadequate pressure redistribution. Proper wound management is vital to ensuring optimal healing outcomes. Surgical intervention is often indicated and consists of the removal of devitalized tissue down to viable tissue in order to facilitate optimal wound healing, either via surgical reconstruction or per secundam. A 52-year-old man with paraplegia and recurrent respiratory infections developed a pressure ulcer on his right upper leg. Under conservative measures, the ulcer persisted, accompanied by a prolonged fever. Surgical

Acute partial sleep deprivation attenuates blood pressure responses to cycling exercise.

Exaggerated blood pressure (BP) responses during exercise are independently associated with future development of hypertension. Partial sleep deprivation (PSD) can increase 24-h ambulatory BP, but the effects on exercise BP are unclear. We hypothesized that acute PSD would augment the BP response to constant load cycling exercise and a 20-min time trial. Twenty-two healthy adults (22 ± 3 yr old; 13 males; V̇o2peak, 43.6 ± 8.2 mL·kg-1·min-1) completed a randomized crossover trial in which they either slept normally (normal sleep-wake schedule for each participant) or sleep was partially deprive

Temporal pattern of arterial CO2 partial pressure during exercise in humans.

The major objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that arterial CO2 partial pressure (PaCO2) does not change in transitions from rest to steady-state exercise and between two levels of exercise. Nine young adults exercised on a treadmill or a bicycle (sit or supine) for 5 min at a mild work load (heart rate = 90 beats X min-1) and then 3 min at a moderate work load (heart rate = 150 beats X min-1). In some studies the moderate work load preceded the mild work load. Arterial blood was sampled from a catheterized artery. During all exercise tasks isocapnia was not strictly maintained

Some characteristics of transcutaneously monitored oxygen partial pressure in normal newborns.

The transcutaneous oxygen partial pressure (PtcO2) was monitored in 50 healthy, normally and spontaneously delivered newborns. Measurements were performed during the first to fourth day of life. The electrode temperature was 44.5 degrees C. The mean PtcO2 level recorded during about 45 min was 9.2 kPa (S.D. 1.4) recorded from the minute-to-minute values. The PtcO2 level normally oscillated to a certain extent and the oscillations were closely related to the breathing pattern of the patient. When the patient fell asleep during measurement, the normal oscillating pattern was replaced by a "silen

Partial pressure of oxygen-guided adrenal venous sampling in primary aldosteronism.

CONTEXT: Adrenal venous sampling (AVS) plays a pivotal role in treatment optimization for primary aldosteronism (PA) to minimize cardiovascular risks. However, technical difficulties often hinder accurate cannulation to the adrenal veins (AVs). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the distribution of partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) in the AV and neighboring veins, inspired by our awareness of the lighter red color of adrenal venous blood than the others. METHODS: We enrolled 179 PA patients who underwent AVS from 2021 to 2024. During AVS, we collected residual blood samples from bilateral

Fiber-optic fluorescence-quenching oxygen partial pressure sensor using platinum octaethylporphyrin.

The development and bench testing of a fiber-optic oxygen sensor is described. The sensor is designed for measurement of tissue oxygen levels in the mucosa of the digestive tract. The materials and construction are optimized for insertion through the mouth for measurement in the lower esophagus. An oxygen-sensitive fluorescence-quenching film was applied as a solution of platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) and dichloromethane and dip coated onto the distal tip of the fiber. The sensor was tested by comparing relative fluorescence when immersed in liquid water at
