Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is among the most important infectious agents causing infertility in pigs. Until recently, it was thought that the virus had low genetic variance, and that prevention of its harmful effect on pig fertility could be well-controlled by vaccination. However, at the beginning of the third millennium, field observations raised concerns about the effectiveness of the available vaccines against newly emerging strains. Subsequent investigations radically changed our view on the evolution and immunology of PPV, revealing that the virus is much more diverse than it was earlier a

Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is considered the main cause of reproductive disorders in pigs, which are summarized under the acronym SMEDI (stillbirth, mummification, embryonic death, and infertility). In this review the biology of the virus and its structure, pathogenic potential and strain variation, as well as the disease induced by the virus, are described. Known aspects of pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention, particularly by vaccination, are summarized. Furthermore, in recent years 'new' parvoviruses (PPV2 to 7) have been described in pigs. They have been detected in pigs from various parts

B19 parvovirus is pathogenic in man and causes a variety of clinical illnesses, among them several haematological diseases. Acute infection of a host with underlying haemolysis produces transient aplastic crisis; of the midtrimester fetus, hydrops fetalis; and of an immunocompromised patient, pure red cell aplasia. The target of B19 parvovirus infection is the human erythroid progenitor cell. Infection is cytotoxic due to expression of the viral nonstructural protein. The virus can be propagated in cultures of human bone marrow, blood, and fetal liver. Humoral immunity normally terminates infe

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is responsible for a wide clinical spectrum ranging from asymptomatic infection, through mild disease, up to life-threatening one. Outbreaks are registered every 3-4 years, and a recent international alert for a new outbreak has been released. The experience of B19 virus circulation in a 600-bed tertiary care pediatric hospital in Rome from 2018 to 2024 is reported here. This retrospective study involved a total of 9695 blood samples (about 8500 patients), 11 amniotic fluids (11 pregnant women), and 10 827 sera (about 9500 patients), processed in the Virology Unit o

Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is common in society. Among adults, more than 50% have contracted the infection and immunity is believed to last lifelong. Infection occurs in a few percent of pregnancies, and albeit rare it can then cause fetal anemia, non-immune fetal hydrops and fetal death. Among cases with fetal demise, B19 is found in significant numbers, especially in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. There is no specific treatment or prophylaxis available against B19 infection, but counseling of non-immune mothers and active monitoring of confirmed maternal infections with interv

Parvovirus B19 (B19) was discovered in 1974 and is the only member of the family Parvoviridae known to be pathogenic in humans. Despite the inability to propagate the virus in cell cultures, much has been learned about the pathophysiology of this virus, including the identification of the cellular receptor (P antigen), and the control of the virus by the immune system. B19 is widespread, and manifestations of infection vary with the immunologic and hematologic status of the host. In healthy immunocompetent individuals B19 is the cause of erythema infectiosum and, particularly in adults, acute

In 1975, during blood screening for hepatitis B, Cossart et al. discovered the human parvovirus B19 (B19). It is a small, single strand DNA virus of the Parvoviridae family. This virus is widespread with 40-80% of adults showing evidence of infection. It is found in the respiratory secretions of viraemic patients and direct contact has been suggested as the most likely mode of transmission. Parenteral transmission is common during treatment with clotting-factor concentrates, but rarely occurs during transfusion with single donor products. Although B19 usually causes a self-limited illness, com

Congenital parvovirus infection was diagnosed in two liveborn premature infants born at 24 and 35 weeks of gestational age. The illnesses were associated with placentomegaly, petechial rash, edema, hepatomegaly, anemia and thrombocytopenia, respiratory insufficiency, and death at 5 and 6 days of age. The syndromes exhibited by these cases shared common but nonspecific features with other life-threatening congenital infections. Serological studies in one case supported the diagnosis of parvoviral infection. Postmortem examination of both revealed nuclear inclusions in erythroid precursor cells

The B19 strain of parvovirus causes several distinct and important clinical diseases in humans. Aplastic crisis in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia, persistent bone marrow depression in immunocompromised individuals, and hydrops fetalis all result from direct infection of hematopoietic cells by the virus. Erythema infectiosum, arthritis, and purpuric vasculitis are postinfectious manifestations of B19 parvovirus infection.

Fifth disease (erythema infectiosum) has recently been linked to human parvovirus (HPV) infection. HPV is also capable of causing aplastic anemia, arthritis and perinatal complications, including hydrops fetalis and spontaneous abortion. Clinically suspected cases of HPV infection can now be confirmed serologically. IgM antibodies peak early in the course of infection and are usually undetectable by two months. New procedures, including HPV-specific DNA probes, are being used to confirm in utero infections.

Since 1981, many reports have contributed to establish that a human parvovirus (parvovirus B 19), which had been isolated only in asymptomatic blood donors, is the causative agent of transient but intense erythroblastopenia in patients with different types of chronic haemolytic anaemia. In vitro cultures of erythroid inhibitors revealed an inhibition by parvovirus B 19, abolished by convalescent serum. In healthy subjects without chronic haemolysis, first contact with parvovirus B 19 results in an inconstant influenza-like syndrome with transient erythroblastopenia which does not produce sympt

Equine parvovirus hepatitis (EqPV-H) was first described in 2018 in a fatal case of Theiler's disease which followed the administration of an equine-origin biological product. The virus has since been frequently identified in serum and liver tissue of horses affected by Theiler's disease-an acute, severe hepatitis characterised by fulminant hepatic necrosis with a fatal outcome in most cases. EqPV-H is hepatotropic, appears to be associated with subclinical to severe hepatitis in horses, and is a likely cause of Theiler's disease. Although this disease is most frequently reported following the

Human parvovirus B19 is the cause of several distinct clinical syndromes. The most common is erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), a febrile exanthem occurring primarily in children. Recent studies have shown that parvovirus B19 can cause acute arthritis and occasionally a chronic arthropathy, both in children and adults. Parvovirus B19 DNA has been detected in studies in the synovial tissue of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but other studies have varied in their findings. Recent studies also indicate a possible connective tissue disease-like syndrome with parvoviral infections. The commo

Infections caused by human parvovirus B19 can result in a wide spectrum of manifestations, which are usually influenced by the patient's immunologic and hematologic status. In the normal host, parvovirus infection can be asymptomatic or can result in erythema infectiosum or arthropathy. Patients with underlying hematologic and immunologic disorders who become infected with this virus are at risk for aplastic anemia. Hydrops fetalis and fetal death are complications of intrauterine parvovirus B19 infection.

Discovered by chance in 1974, the human serum parvovirus B19 is at present the only recognized, autonomous, pathogenic human parvovirus. For some years following its discovery, B19 was not associated with any defined clinical syndrome; although a high titre viraemia was often noted in infected individuals they were largely asymptomatic. In 1980 the causal association between B19 infection and aplastic crisis in chronic haemolytic anaemia began to emerge with the discovery of B19 as the agent responsible for aplastic crisis in sickle cell anaemia. This fulfilled the expectation of a disease of

BACKGROUND: Based on single case reports, parvovirus B19 (B19) has repeatedly been proposed as an etiologic agent in patients with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), perhaps causing vasculitis by direct invasion of vascular endothelial cells because of the tissue distribution of the cellular B19 receptor. A cohort of children with HSP and other vasculitic diseases was investigated and compared with healthy control children to assess the role of B19 as well as parvovirus V9 (a putative emerging B19-like virus).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Serum samples from 36 children with HSP (n = 29) or other vascul

IMPORTANCE: Although the risk of parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy and subsequent risk of adverse fetal outcome are low, understanding management practices is essential for proper treatment of fetuses with nonimmune hydrops fetalis. In addition, continued investigation into delivery management, breastfeeding recommendations, and congenital abnormalities associated with pregnancies complicated by parvovirus B19 infection is needed.
OBJECTIVE: This review describes the risks associated with parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy and the management strategies for fetuses with vertical

Infection with parvovirus B19 causes several clinical syndromes (fifth disease, transient aplastic crisis, pure red cell aplasia, and hydrops fetalis) and may contribute to other illnesses. B19 has been linked to renal disease in three settings: As a cause of acute glomerulopathy and as a cause of anemia in ESRD and kidney transplantation. Case reports implicate parvovirus in the pathogenesis of proliferative glomerulonephritis and collapsing glomerulopathy, but a causal relationship has not been established. A proposed role for B19 infection is based on the temporal association of renal findi

Parvovirus B19 is a widespread infection that may affects 1-5% of pregnant women, mainly with normal pregnancy outcome. The prevalence of infection is higher during epidemics - between 3 and 20% with sero-conversion rate of 3-34%. Infection during pregnancy can cause a variety of other signs of fetal damage. The risk of adverse fetal outcome is increased if maternal infection occurs during the first two trimesters of pregnancy but may also happen during the third trimester. It is a significant cause of fetal loss throughout pregnancy, but has a higher impact in the second half of pregnancy whe
