A cytogenetic analysis with chromosome painting in typical antbirds (Passeriformes, Thamnophilidae) and an inference on chromosome evolution in Passeriformes.

The typical antbirds (Passeriformes, Thamnophilidae) are a monophyletic group comprising 225 species in 45 genera, primarily distributed in the lowland forests of the Neotropics. There is limited karyotypic information for this bird family, including chromosome morphology and diploid number (2n), highlighting the importance of understanding the evolutionary history of karyotypic diversification of this family. Few species in Thamnophilidae have been karyotyped to date, with observed diploid numbers ranging from 76 to 82 chromosomes. This study examined the karyotype of three Thamnophilidae spe

Phylogeny and classification of the Old World Emberizini (Aves, Passeriformes).

The phylogeny of the avian genus Emberiza and the monotypic genera Latoucheornis, Melophus and Miliaria (collectively the Old World Emberizini), as well as representatives for the New World Emberizini, the circumpolar genera Calcarius and Plectrophenax and the four other generally recognized tribes in the subfamily Emberizinae was estimated based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and introns 6-7 of the nuclear ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) gene. Our results support monophyly of the Old World Emberizini, but do not corroborate a sister relationship to the New World Emberizini. Calcarius an

Molecular identification of novel and genetically diverse adenoviruses in Passeriform birds.

Knowledge about adenoviruses in birds of the order Passeriformes is very scarce. Based on molecular characterizations, only two siadenoviruses, great tit adenovirus 1 and Gouldian finch adenovirus, have been described so far occurring in great tits and Gouldian finches, respectively. Assuming a broader occurrence of adenoviruses, various passeriform birds including pet, zoo, and wild birds were examined using a broad-range PCR targeting a fragment of the adenovirus DNA polymerase gene. Adenoviruses were detected in 25 individual birds belonging to 13 species and seven zoological families (Ploc

Physical, epidemiological, and molecular evaluation of infection by Cryptosporidium galli in Passeriformes.

Due to the scarcity of information related to the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium infection in passerine birds, this study aimed to determine the periodicity of fecal shedding of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts, after natural infection, and its clinical signs, mortality, and molecular characterization. Four hundred eighty fecal samples were collected from 40 birds, including 372 samples from 31 adult birds and 108 samples from nine young birds (up to 12 months old), housed in five aviaries, monthly from September 2007 to September 2008, with the exception of April. Evolution and functional significance of tendon ossification in woodcreepers (Aves: Passeriformes: Dendrocolaptinae).

The woodcreepers, a clade of scansorial, neotropical birds, are distinctive among passerines in having extensive tendon ossification. Dissection of 42 of the 50 species indicates that such ossification in the hindlimb is limited almost entirely to tendons of insertion of the crural muscles. Most crural muscles have ossifications, and in all but one the ossified tendons are long and thin. Preliminary dissection revealed a similar pattern among ossified wing tendons. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that extensive tendon ossification is a synapomorphy of the woodcreepers. The species of Dendrocinc

Ectoparasites of the black-chinned siskin Spinus barbatus (Passeriformes: Fringillidae) in Chile.

Despite being a bird with a broad and extensive distribution in Chile, the black-chinned siskin, Spinus barbatus Molina, 1782 is not well studied in relation to its parasites. This paper aims to describe the ectoparasite fauna of S. barbatus in central and southern Chile. A total of 125 individuals caught with mist nets were examined alive; a total of 22 parasites were found dead and were exposed to parasit autopsy. The extracted parasites were preserved in 70% alcohol for subsequent mounting and identification. Ectoparasites were found in 56 black-chinned siskins (38%); 48 of them (33%) had 8

Aspergillosis and candidiasis in psittacine and passeriforme birds with particular reference to nasal lesions.

High incidences of aspergillosis (12.9%) and candidiasis (15.4%) were encountered in 241 psittacines and passeriformes which died within 2 weeks of quarantine after being imported into Japan. Respiratory aspergillosis was diagnosed in 31 birds which involved mainly the nasal cavity (17 birds), lung (14 birds) and air sac (13 birds). Thirty-seven birds had candidial lesions in various organs, especially in the nasal cavity (22 birds), crop (17 birds), oesophagus (12 birds), proventriculus (6 birds) and gizzard (6 birds). The study provided strong evidence that the nasal cavity was an important

Pre-existing Microfilarial Infections of American Robins (Passeriformes: Turdidae) and Common Grackles (Passeriformes: Icteridae) Have Limited Impact on Enhancing Dissemination of West Nile Virus in Culex pipiens Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae).

Microfilariae (MF) are the immature stages of filarial nematode parasites and inhabit the blood and dermis of all classes of vertebrates, except fish. Concurrent ingestion of MF and arboviruses by mosquitoes can enhance mosquito transmission of virus compared to when virus is ingested alone. Shortly after being ingested, MF penetrate the mosquito's midgut and may introduce virus into the mosquito's hemocoel, creating a disseminated viral infection much sooner than normal. This phenomenon is known as microfilarial enhancement. Both American Robins and Common Grackles harbor MF-that is, Eufilari

Systematics of three pan-Amazonian antwren lineages (Aves: Passeriformes: Thamnophilidae: Myrmotherula and Isleria).

Working within the framework of a companion phylogenetic analysis, we reexamined species limits within three lineages of antwrens (two species and one species complex) widely distributed across the Amazon Basin. Diagnostic differences in vocal and plumage characters provided the basis for the following taxonomic revisions. Myrmotherula longipennis is found to comprise three species: (1) M. longipennis (sensu stricto), which is confined to the region north of the Amazon; (2) M. garbei, which is elevated from subspecies status and includes the subspecies zimmeri; and (3) M. paraensis, which is a

The Chromosomal Organization of Isleria hauxwelli and Its Meaning for the Karyotypic Evolution in Thamnophilidae (Passeriformes).

The order Passeriformes, the most speciose avian order, includes over 6000 species (~60% of all birds). The Amazon Basin alone hosts > 900 bird species, with Passeriformes representing > 500 of them. The family Thamnophilidae comprises ~200 insectivorous species, accounting for 15% of Neotropical passerine richness. Within Thamnophilinae, Isleria is the least speciose genus, containing only two species. It was erected after phylogenetic analyses revealed Myrmotherula as non-monophyletic. To advance knowledge of chromosomal evolution in Passeriformes, we analyzed the karyotype of Isleria hauxwe

PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS OF GUIMARAESIELLA AND PRICEIELLA (PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA) FROM BABBLERS AND NON-BABBLERS (PASSERIFORMES).

Babblers (Passeriformes: Leiothrichidae, Pellorneidae, Timaliidae) are parasitized by more genera of lice of the Brueelia complex than any other group of songbirds. However, the relationships of these louse groups are poorly known. We here try to resolve the relationships between Guimaraesiella (Guimaraesiella), Guimaraesiella (Cicchinella), and their putative sister group Priceiella by using mitochondrial cytochrome c subunit 1 (COI), 12S, and 16S sequences. Our data indicate that G. (Cicchinella) forms a monophyletic group of lice from babblers, but the relationship between G. (Guimaraesiell
