Treatment outlines for avoidant, dependent and passive-aggressive personality disorders were developed by having nominated experts consider their own views in the light of the treatment literature and the responses of practising psychiatrists. The experts recommend that long-term psychotherapy is the treatment of choice and that a considerable component of the outcome will be related to the therapeutic relationship. Assessment, general approaches to treatment, and strategies in psychodynamic management are outlined in some detail. For those individuals for whom long-term therapy is not availab

Decisions about whether to include depressive, passive-aggressive, sadistic, and self-defeating disorders in Axis II have been made difficult by a relative dearth of data. We report the results of a study identifying potential defining features of these diagnoses and assessing their distinctiveness from other Axis II personality disorders (PDs). A national sample of experienced psychiatrists and psychologists used the SWAP-200 to describe a patient with a current axis II disorder or an appendix or deleted PD from DSM-II-R. We examined clinicians' descriptions of patients to identify their most

The authors evaluated personality dysfunction in 23 patients with primary obsessive-compulsive disorder and an age- and sex-matched group of patients with major depressive disorder. There were no significant differences between the two patient groups with respect to mean personality trait scores or the frequency or type of personality disorder diagnosis. A mixed personality disorder with avoidant, dependent, and passive-aggressive features was most commonly observed in the obsessive-compulsive group. There was a very low frequency of schizoid or compulsive personality disorder.

96 patients with a clinical diagnosis of Dissociative Identity Disorder were administered the Million Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II. The most elevated personality disorder scales were Avoidant, Self-defeating, Borderline, and Passive-Aggressive personality disorders. Elevated Axis I scales included Dysthymia, Major Depression, Thought Disorder, and Anxiety Disorder. Million-II profiles of a patient before and after integration showed normalization of a previously pathological profile.

Seven hundred ninety-seven first-degree relatives of normal controls and patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality Disorders. Slightly more than one sixth of the sample received a personality disorder (PD) diagnosis, and of those with a PD, almost one fourth had more than one. The most prevalent diagnoses were mixed, passive-aggressive, antisocial, histrionic, and schizotypal PD. The demographic correlates and frequency of Axis I disorders in individuals with each specific PD wer

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the frequency of DSM-III-R personality disorders in adolescent and young adult psychiatric inpatients.
METHOD: Structured diagnostic interviews were reliably performed with a series of 255 consecutively admitted inpatients (138 adolescents and 117 young adults).
RESULTS: Most personality disorders were diagnosed in similar frequencies in the two study groups. Passive-aggressive personality disorder was diagnosed with lower frequency and dependent personality disorder with higher frequency in the young adult than in the adolescent group.
CONCLUSIONS: The isomo

The author describes the development of the borderline concept and the apparent inaccuracy of the original hypothetical framework. The signs and symptoms used to describe a "borderline syndrome" are often shared with other psychiatric illnesses. The author recommends that clinicians consider patients with only those features as "undiagnosed" until further research determines whether a distinct syndrome exists.

Neuroticism and DSM-III personality disorder were studied in 39 depressed inpatients. Interrelationships between these variables and their relationship to depressive typology were compared. The relationship of neuroticism, DSM-III personality type and adequacy of personality to MAOI treatment are also examined. Neuroticism scores were unaffected by short-term treatment, and no differences in neuroticism were observed between melancholics and nonmelancholics, or between endogenous and nonendogenous depressives. Higher neuroticism scores were associated with DSM-III personality disorder. Persona

This study compared six different personality disorders on level of psychological reactance. Eighty clients met criteria for inclusion in one of six personality disorder groups, including passive-aggressive, dependent, personality disorder NOS (not otherwise specified), no personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive, and borderline. Instruments included the Therapeutic Reactance Scale (TRS) and the Questionnaire for the Measurement of Psychological Reactance (QMPR). Four one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were conducted on the scales and subscales of the two reactance measures. All four ANOV

BACKGROUND: The effect of the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder varies, but how personality disorder functioning style influences it remains unclear.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 30 healthy volunteers and 44 patients with panic disorder (22 treated and 22 waiting list), we administered the Parker Personality Measure (PERM) and the Plutchik-van Praag Depression Inventory (PVP). Before and during the CBT or waiting period, patients were asked to record their panic attacks using the Panic Attack Record (PAR).
RESULTS: Patients scored significantly higher on PERM Antisocial, Bord

Thirty patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa with at least three bingeing episodes a week were compared with 30 age- and sex-matched controls on DSM-III personality measures. The bulimic patients were more likely to display cluster B (histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, and borderline) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 15.0) and cluster C (avoidant, dependent, compulsive, and passive-aggressive) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 4.3) than were the community controls. This study supports the finding that personality disorder is a possible risk factor for bulimia.

This study was undertaken to investigate psychiatric comorbidity in male and female adolescents with conduct disorder diagnoses. Twenty-five hospitalized adolescents (11 females, 14 males) with conduct disorder were evaluated using structured diagnostic interviews for Axis I and personality disorders. The most common Axis I comorbid diagnoses were: depressive disorders (major depression and/or dysthymia), 64 percent; anxiety disorders (separation anxiety disorder, overanxious disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, and/or posttraumatic stress disorder), 52 percent; su

Nightmares are prevalent in psychiatric disorders, and personality disorder features might be associated with nightmare experience, especially in nightmare disorder patients. The authors invited 219 healthy volunteers and 118 nightmare disorder patients to undergo tests of the Nightmare Experience Questionnaire (NEQ), the Parker Personality Measure (PERM), and the Plutchik-van Praag Depression Inventory. Compared to healthy volunteers, nightmare disorder patients scored significantly higher on annual nightmare frequency and NEQ Physical Effect, Negative Emotion, Meaning Interpretation, and Hor

Personality disorders (PDs) are commonly found in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and are associated with increased ADHD symptoms and psychosocial impairment. To assess the impact of PDs or personality traits on retention rates in ADHD trials and whether treating ADHD affects the expression of PD, data were analyzed from 2 methylphenidate trials. Assessment of PDs and personality traits included using the Wisconsin Personality Disorders Inventory IV and the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition Person

The personality scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) were constructed and validated to measure the typology developed by Millon (1981). The ability of the MCMI to measure the DSM-III personality disorders has not yet been empirically evaluated. The current study found better convergent validity for the DSM-III personality disorders that are consistent with Millon's typology (i.e., the avoidant and the dependent) than for the disorders that are inconsistent (i.e., the antisocial and the passive-aggressive). However, the results may reflect some advantages Millon's typology

In 15 women with Late Luteal Phase Dysphoric Disorder (LLPDD) and in 15 normal control subjects, personality traits were assessed using the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) during follicular and luteal menstrual-cycle phases. Compared with controls, LLPDD subjects had less compulsive but more passive/aggressive and borderline/cycloid traits, and more depression and hypomania. Menstrual-cycle phase did not significantly affect personality variables in either group. In particular, depression and hypomania in LLPDD subjects suggests a relationship with affective disorders.

Twenty-eight dysthymic patients (82.1% with personality disorders) were investigated with questionnaires for personality and depression before and after treatment. When in asymptomatic state, defined by clinical criteria and HAM-D score 6 or lower, the personality profile of 15 patients (group I) was significantly changed from the one before treatment (avoidant, passive-aggressive, borderline and schizotypal dimensions were lower, and narcissistic dimension higher [P < 0.01]). Thirteen patients (group II) had an unchanged profile. The first group showed significant state-trait dependence, espe
