Within the last decade new knowledge has emerged concerning the significance of Pasteurellaceae in man; the classification has undergone some changes, and new taxa were described. Haemophilus influenzae serotype b was shown to have a clonal distribution that is related to demographic patterns of the human host. Brazilian purpuric fever is caused by a special clone of Haemophilus aegyptius. H. influenzae biotype IV seems to be a genital pathogen, and may deserve species rank. New Pasteurella species have been described, that occur in well known pathological foci in man, e.g. bite wounds. Toxige

Members of the highly heterogeneous family Pasteurellaceae cause a wide variety of diseases in humans and animals. Antimicrobial agents are the most powerful tools to control such infections. However, the acquisition of resistance genes, as well as the development of resistance-mediating mutations, significantly reduces the efficacy of the antimicrobial agents. This article gives a brief description of the role of selected members of the family Pasteurellaceae in animal infections and of the most recent data on the susceptibility status of such members. Moreover, a review of the current knowle

We performed hybridizations between labeled rRNAs from seven representative members of the family Pasteurellaceae and from three other taxa on the one hand and DNAs from 53 strains known or presumed to belong to the Pasteurellaceae on the other hand. The members of the Pasteurellaceae are most closely related to members of the Enterobacteriaceae, the Vibrionaceae, the Aeromonadaceae, and the genus Alteromonas. The family Pasteurellaceae is very heterogeneous. There are at least seven rRNA branches. Several organisms with the same genus name are dispersed over the entire dendrogram. The "Histop

Pasteurellosis is a well-recognized disease with similar pathology in all laboratory rodent species. Pasteurella pneumotropica is the most frequently mentioned member of the Pasteurellaceae isolated from mice and rats. Numerous other Pasteurellaceae taxa have been obtained from mice, rats, and other rodent species. Recently, rodent Pasteurellaceae have been submitted to comprehensive genetic and phenotypic (polyphasic) taxonomic studies. As a result they are now classed within six validly published new genera, namely Cricetibacter, Mesocricetibacter, Mannheimia, Muribacter, Necropsobacter, and

As commercial producers of American bison (Bison bison) become more numerous, concerns relative to bison health management increase. Since loss due to respiratory disease associated with Pasteurella and related Pasteurellaceae is a major concern for cattle producers, a study was conducted to determine what types of Pasteurellaceae are carried by bison to evaluate the potential of pneumonic pasteurellosis in bison herds where management practices are comparable to those used for cattle. Tonsillar biopsies, collected in May (n = 29) and August (n = 25) 1997 from 24- to 30-month-old bison bulls,

We used 16S rRNA sequencing and leukotoxin gene (lktA) screening via PCR assay to clarify phylogenetic and epidemiologic relationships among Pasteurellaceae isolated from bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). Only six of 21 bighorn isolates identified as "Mannheimia haemolytica" in original laboratory reports appeared to be isolates of M. haemolytica sensu stricto based on 16S rRNA sequence comparisons; the remainder grouped with M. glucosida (n=8) or M. ruminalis (n=7). Similarly, 16S rRNA sequence comparisons grouped only 16 of 25 trehalose-fermenting bighorn isolates with reference strains of Bi

The aim of the present study was to determine which Pasteurella and Mannheimia species are present in the upper respiratory tract of healthy calves with no history of antimicrobial treatment prior to sampling. The presence of subpopulations of tetracycline-resistant Pasteurellaceae was also investigated. Nasal swabs from 61 loose group-housed, clinically healthy calves, 1 to 4 months old, from 16 dairy herds were inoculated aerobically on a selective medium (Columbia agar with 5% ovine blood and 16 mg/L bacitracin) with or without 4 mg/L oxytetracycline (OTC). A total of 43 strains belonging t

We investigated three bovine respiratory pathobionts in healthy cattle using qPCR optimised and validated to quantify Histophilus somni, Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida over a wide dynamic range. A longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the carriage and density of these bacteria in the nasal passages of healthy beef calves (N = 60) housed over winter in an experimental farm setting. The three pathobiont species exhibited remarkably different carriage rates and density profiles. At housing, high carriage rates were observed for P. multocida (95%), and H. somni (75%), w

Strains of the Pasteurellaceae bacteria Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica are major etiological agents of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Treatment of BRD with antimicrobials is becoming more challenging due to the increasing occurrence of resistance in infecting strains. In Pasteurellaceae strains exhibiting resistance to multiple antimicrobials including aminoglycosides, beta-lactams, macrolides and sulfonamides, the resistance determinants are often chromosomally encoded within integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs). To gain a more comprehensive picture of ICE structur

Monitoring of rodents for Pasteurellaceae infection may be carried out by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We tested which of 17 rodent Pasteurellaceae strains were detected by three PCR primer sets. By phylogenetic analysis, 12 strains were assigned to the Rodent cluster and five strains to other clusters, namely the Somnus cluster, Pasteurella sensu stricto, Actinobacillus sensu stricto, the Mannheimia and Rossii cluster. A primer set developed to detect biotype Heyl [Pasteurella] pneumotropica produced amplicons from three strains and appeared specific for this taxon. A primer set devel

The present study was undertaken to address the recent spate of pasteurellosis outbreaks among sea-farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Norway and Scotland, coinciding with sporadic disease episodes in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) used for delousing purposes in salmon farms. Genome assemblies from 86 bacterial isolates cultured from diseased salmon or lumpfish confirmed them all as bona fide members of the Pasteurellaceae family, with phylogenetic reconstruction dividing them into two distinct branches sharing <88% average nucleotide identity. These branches therefore constitute two separa

BACKGROUND: Actinobacillus suis disease has been reported in a wide range of vertebrate species, but is most commonly found in swine. A. suis is a commensal of the tonsils of the soft palate of swine, but in the presence of unknown stimuli it can invade the bloodstream, causing septicaemia and sequelae such as meningitis, arthritis, and death. It is genotypically and phenotypically similar to A. pleuropneumoniae, the causative agent of pleuropneumonia, and to other members of the family Pasteurellaceae that colonise tonsils. At present, very little is known about the genes involved in attachme

Wild and domestic animal populations are known to be sources and reservoirs of emerging diseases. There is also a growing recognition that horizontal genetic transfer (HGT) plays an important role in bacterial pathogenesis. We used molecular phylogenetic methods to assess diversity and cross-transmission rates of Pasteurellaceae bacteria in populations of bighorn sheep, Dall's sheep, domestic sheep and domestic goats. Members of the Pasteurellaceae cause an array of deadly illnesses including bacterial pneumonia known as "pasteurellosis", a particularly devastating disease for bighorn sheep. A

Five crocodilian species were investigated for the presence of Pasteurellaceae. A total of 27 pharyngeal isolates were obtained and characterized by MALDI-TOF MS and preliminary phenotypic tests to enable selection of representative strains for further genotypic characterization. Twelve isolates were selected for sequencing followed by phylogenetic analyses, digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and calculation of average nucleotide identity (ANI), in addition to comparative analyses of partial rpoB, 16S rRNA gene sequences and further phenotypic characterization. The phenotypic and genotypic c

Ninety pharyngeal tonsils were collected from 2-year-old American bison (Bison bison) bulls and sampled for members of the Pasteurellaceae family. Particular attention was paid to seasonal incidence and antimicrobial resistance in serotypes and biovariants. Multiple strains of Pasteurella haemolytica (39%), P. trehalosi (68%), P. multocida (34%) and Haemophilus somnus (13%) were cultured from 86 out of the 90 (96%) tonsil samples. Pasteurella trehalosi was the most common and evenly distributed of the organisms recovered. Pasteurella haemolytica was found in fewer numbers than P. trehalosi, bu

The occurrence of members of the Pasteurellaceae and Neisseriaceae families was studied in dogs and cats. A total of 110 nasal and pharyngeal swab samples from 47 dogs and 8 cats were collected. Most of the strains were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing, except Frederiksenia canicola and Pasteurella multocida where species-specific polymerase chain reactions were applied. The most frequently isolated species was F. canicola, which occurred only in dogs, mainly in the pharyngeal cavity. The second commonest bacterium, P. multocida was found in both types of samples and in both hosts. Other spec

To investigate the pathogenicities of P. pneumotropica (Pp) and V-factor dependent Pasteurellaceae (VFDP) in immunodeficient rats, experimental infections of F344-rnu rats were performed using 3 strains (ATCC 35149, CNP 160 and RPZ) of Pp and 4 strains (V6, V7, V8 and V9) of VFDP. Four animals per experimental group were inoculated twice on day 0 and post-inoculation day (PID) 14 with bacterial suspension intranasally. Two animals from each group were sacrificed on PID 60 and 120, and examined. In the animals inoculated with strains of Pp, sneezing was observed in some animals inoculated with

Monitoring circulating pathogens in wildlife populations is important in evaluating causes and sources of disease as well as understanding transmission between wild and domestic animals. In spring 2010, a sudden die-off in a chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) population sharing habitat with livestock occurred in northeastern Austria. Nineteen animals were submitted for examination. Necropsy and pathohistologic and bacteriologic results yielded lesions associated with Pasteurellaceae species. Additional testing included enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus and random amplification of poly

Multidrug-resistant (MDR; resistance to ≥3 antimicrobial classes) members of the Pasteurellaceae family may compromise the efficacy of therapies used to prevent and treat bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in feedlot cattle. This study examined the prevalence of multidrug resistance in strains of Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida collected from BRD cattle mortalities in North America. Isolates of M. haemolytica (n = 147) and P. multocida (n = 70) spanning 69 Alberta feedlots from 2011 to 2016 and two United States feedlots from 2011 to 2012 were examined for antimicrobial resistan

We investigated a pasteurellosis epizootic in free-ranging bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) wherein a Pasteurellaceae strain carried by syntopic cattle (Bos taurus) under severe winter conditions appeared to contribute to pneumonia in affected bighorns. Twenty-one moribund or dead bighorn sheep were found on the "Fossil Ridge" herd's winter range, Colorado, USA, between 13 December 2007 and 29 February 2008. Eight carcasses examined showed gross or microscopic evidence of acute to subacute fibrinous bronchopneumonia. All eight carcasses yielded at least one β-hemolytic Mannheimia haemolytica bi
