Experimental infection studies of Pasteurella pneumotropica and V-factor dependent Pasteurellaceae for F344-rnu rats.

To investigate the pathogenicities of P. pneumotropica (Pp) and V-factor dependent Pasteurellaceae (VFDP) in immunodeficient rats, experimental infections of F344-rnu rats were performed using 3 strains (ATCC 35149, CNP 160 and RPZ) of Pp and 4 strains (V6, V7, V8 and V9) of VFDP. Four animals per experimental group were inoculated twice on day 0 and post-inoculation day (PID) 14 with bacterial suspension intranasally. Two animals from each group were sacrificed on PID 60 and 120, and examined. In the animals inoculated with strains of Pp, sneezing was observed in some animals inoculated with

Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic evaluation of marbofloxacin as a single injection for Pasteurellaceae respiratory infections in cattle using population pharmacokinetics and Monte Carlo simulations.

Population pharmacokinetic of marbofloxacin was investigated with 52 plasma concentration-time profiles obtained after intramuscular administration of Forcyl® in cattle. Animal's status, pre-ruminant, ruminant, or dairy cow, was retained as a relevant covariate for clearance. Monte Carlo simulations were performed using a stratification by status, and 1000 virtual disposition curves were generated in each bovine subpopulation for the recommended dosage regimen of 10 mg/kg as a single injection. The probability of target attainment (PTA) of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) ratios associa

Evaluating the transmission dynamics and host competency of aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) experimentally infected with Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae and leukotoxigenic Pasteurellaceae.

Feral populations of aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) occur in Texas bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) habitat and pose several conceptual ecological threats to bighorn sheep re-establishment efforts. The potential threat of disease transmission from aoudad to bighorn sheep may exacerbate these issues, but the host competency of aoudad and subsequent pathophysiology and transmissibility of pneumonic pathogens involved in the bighorn sheep respiratory disease complex is largely unknown. Because the largest population-limiting diseases of bighorn sheep involve pathogens causing bronchopneumonia, we eval

Comparison of polymerase chain reaction primer sets for amplification of rodent Pasteurellaceae.

Monitoring of rodents for Pasteurellaceae infection may be carried out by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We tested which of 17 rodent Pasteurellaceae strains were detected by three PCR primer sets. By phylogenetic analysis, 12 strains were assigned to the Rodent cluster and five strains to other clusters, namely the Somnus cluster, Pasteurella sensu stricto, Actinobacillus sensu stricto, the Mannheimia and Rossii cluster. A primer set developed to detect biotype Heyl [Pasteurella] pneumotropica produced amplicons from three strains and appeared specific for this taxon. A primer set devel

Revised taxonomy and nomenclature of rodent Pasteurellaceae: Implications for monitoring.

Pasteurellosis is a well-recognized disease with similar pathology in all laboratory rodent species. Pasteurella pneumotropica is the most frequently mentioned member of the Pasteurellaceae isolated from mice and rats. Numerous other Pasteurellaceae taxa have been obtained from mice, rats, and other rodent species. Recently, rodent Pasteurellaceae have been submitted to comprehensive genetic and phenotypic (polyphasic) taxonomic studies. As a result they are now classed within six validly published new genera, namely Cricetibacter, Mesocricetibacter, Mannheimia, Muribacter, Necropsobacter, and

Pasteurellaceae bacteria from the oral cavity of Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus Harrisii) show high minimum inhibitory concentration values towards aminoglycosides and clindamycin.

UNLABELLED: Threatened by Devil Facial Tumor Disease, the Tasmanian devil populations are vulnerable and decreasing. Additionally, the devils' biting behaviour elevates their risk of acquiring bite wound infections caused by members of the bacterial Pasteurellaceae family that are natural inhabitants of the oral microbiota. In medical management of such bite wounds, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles are crucial. Prior to this investigation, no available data on minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values existed. A total of 26 isolates obtained from the oral cavity of 26 healthy Tasmania

Mortality in Common (Sterna hirundo) and Sandwich (Thalasseus sandvicensis) Terns Associated with Bisgaard Taxon 40 Infection on Marco Island, Florida, USA.

Widely distributed aquatic species such as terns are highly dependent on, and can serve as indicators of, the global health of marine and other aquatic environments. Documented mass mortality events in terns have been associated with anthropogenic, weather-related and, less commonly, infectious causes. This study describes a multispecies mortality event associated with brevetoxicosis and Bisgaard taxon 40-induced sepsis involving common (Sterna hirundo) and sandwich (Thalasseus sandvicensis) terns off the southwest coast of Florida, USA, in November and December 2018. During an approximately 6

Pasteurellosis in a spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata).

This report describes the first fatal case of pasteurellosis caused by a probable novel Pasteurellaceae strain in a lizard. The case involved a 5-year-old male spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata) exhibiting severe multifocal bacterial granulomatous myocarditis and pneumonia, along with marked congestive hepatomegaly and ascites associated with cardiac lesions. Bacterial proliferation was observed in the heart, lungs, and liver, suggesting hematogenous dissemination. Strain P25039, which is closely related to Pasteurella testudinis, Chelonobacter oris, and Testudinibacter aquarius, has b

Antimicrobial Resistance in Pasteurellaceae of Veterinary Origin.

Members of the highly heterogeneous family Pasteurellaceae cause a wide variety of diseases in humans and animals. Antimicrobial agents are the most powerful tools to control such infections. However, the acquisition of resistance genes, as well as the development of resistance-mediating mutations, significantly reduces the efficacy of the antimicrobial agents. This article gives a brief description of the role of selected members of the family Pasteurellaceae in animal infections and of the most recent data on the susceptibility status of such members. Moreover, a review of the current knowle

Severe pneumonia in a street rat (Rattus norvegicus) caused by Rodentibacter rarus strain RMC2.

BACKGROUND: Rodents are one of the most dangerous reservoirs and carriers of infectious diseases. Gradually, rats have become predominant in cities, sometimes staying in close vicinity to humans, pets, and other animals. Consequently, they tend to increase the transmission risk of pathogens. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we report an original case of bacterial pneumonia in a street rat (Rattus norvegicus). The rat was found dead on a street in the chief town of Marseille (France) after being run over by a car. The necropsy of the corpse revealed generalized granulomatous pneumonia in almost all the

First Report of Isolation of Gallibacterium anatis from Layer Chickens in Morocco with Decrease in Laying Performance.

Gallibacterium is a genus of the family of Pasteurellaceae. It is well known as a commensal inhabitant of the respiratory and reproductive tract of healthy chickens. But in the last years, Gallibacterium anatis is increasingly reported in field cases with a decrease in laying performance due to infections of the reproductive tract. The aim of the present study was to investigate the implication of G. anatis infection in layer flocks facing a decrease in laying performance in Morocco. Birds were received from five different laying hen farms in two regions in Morocco showing a drop of egg produc

Avibacterium paragallinarum, the Causative Agent of Infectious Coryza: A Comprehensive Review.

Infectious coryza (IC) caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum (AP) has risen in importance as a poultry disease over the past several years because of its increased incidence in commercial poultry in both Europe and the United States. Because of this rise in importance, more attention has been focused on diagnosis, isolation, and surveillance of this bacterial pathogen. As a result, new knowledge has been produced and published. This review was compiled with the main purpose of summarizing and presenting the updated knowledge available about AP. However, the new knowledge can only be understood

Impact of bronchoalveolar lavage from influenza A virus diseased pigs on neutrophil functions and growth of co-infecting pathogenic bacteria.

INTRODUCTION: Influenza A viruses (IAVs) infect the respiratory tract of mainly humans, poultry, and pigs. Co-infections with pathogenic lung bacteria are a common event and contribute to the severity of disease progression. Neutrophils are a major cell type of the innate immune system and are rapidly recruited to the site of infection. They have several effector functions to fight invading pathogens such as the secretion of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). NETs are known to promote the growth of Pasteurellaceae bacteria, especially if degr

The clinical significance of Nicoletella semolina in horses with respiratory disorders and a screening of the bacterial flora in the airways of horses.

Nicoletella semolina, a member of the family Pasteurellaceae, can be isolated from the airways of horses with respiratory disorders. However, its role as a potential or opportunistic pathogen is not clear nor is its presence as part of the normal flora. We therefore investigated the presence and bacterial load of N. semolina in healthy and diseased horses. Samples from a healthy control group were compared with samples from the routine analysis of horses with a clinical history of respiratory disorders. A total of 1770 nose swabs and 1132 tracheal aspirate samples were analysed and subjected t

Ecology and significance of Pasteurellaceae in man--an update.

Within the last decade new knowledge has emerged concerning the significance of Pasteurellaceae in man; the classification has undergone some changes, and new taxa were described. Haemophilus influenzae serotype b was shown to have a clonal distribution that is related to demographic patterns of the human host. Brazilian purpuric fever is caused by a special clone of Haemophilus aegyptius. H. influenzae biotype IV seems to be a genital pathogen, and may deserve species rank. New Pasteurella species have been described, that occur in well known pathological foci in man, e.g. bite wounds. Toxige

MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION OF MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY PASTEURELLACEAE FROM THE ORAL CAVITY OF KOALAS (PHASCOLARCTOS CINEREUS) AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH ISOLATES FROM KOALA BITE WOUNDS IN HUMANS.

A total of 22 Pasteurellaceae isolates obtained from the oral cavity of koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) at different wildlife centers in Australia were investigated using amplification and sequencing of two housekeeping genes, rpoA and recN. The available sequences from the Lonepinella koalarum type strain (ACM3666T) and the recent isolates of Lonepinella-like bacteria obtained from human infected wounds associated with koala bites were also included. Phylogenetic analysis was performed on the concatenated rpoA-recN genes and genome relatedness was calculated based on the recN sequences. The o

Acute die-off of chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) in the Eastern Austrian Alps due to bacterial bronchopneumonia with Pasteurellaceae.

Monitoring circulating pathogens in wildlife populations is important in evaluating causes and sources of disease as well as understanding transmission between wild and domestic animals. In spring 2010, a sudden die-off in a chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) population sharing habitat with livestock occurred in northeastern Austria. Nineteen animals were submitted for examination. Necropsy and pathohistologic and bacteriologic results yielded lesions associated with Pasteurellaceae species. Additional testing included enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus and random amplification of poly

Mannheimia granulomatis-Infected Pyogranulomatous Oral Lesions with Concurrent Amyloidosis in Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) in France.

Mannheimia granulomatis-associated lesions have been poorly described compared with those associated with other members of the Pasteurellaceae family; they include pneumonia, panniculitis, and keratoconjunctivitis in domestic and wild ruminants and hares. We describe 15 cases of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) showing M. granulomatis-infected oral lesions that were detected in France between 2016 and 2023. Comprehensive necropsies were performed, with additional analyses based on findings. All deer were >15 mo of age on the basis of tooth eruption. They were thin (1/15), cachectic (13/15), or o

Etiology, epidemiology, pathology, and advances in diagnosis, vaccine development, and treatment of Gallibacterium anatis infection in poultry: a review.

Gallibacterium anatis is a Gram-negative bacterium of the Pasteurellaceae family that resides normally in the respiratory and reproductive tracts in poultry. It is a major cause of oophoritis, salpingitis, and peritonitis, decreases egg production and mortality in hens thereby severely affecting animal welfare and overall productivity by poultry industries across Europe, Asia, America, and Africa. In addition, it has the ability to infect wider host range including domesticated and free-ranging avian hosts as well as mammalian hosts such as cattle, pigs and human. Evaluating the common virulen

Detection of Gallibacterium spp. in chickens by fluorescent 16S rRNA in situ hybridization.

Gallibacterium has recently been included as a new genus of the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981, which encompasses bacteria previously reported as Pasteurella anatis, "Actinobacillus salpingitidis," and avian Pasteurella haemolytica-like organisms. So far, identification has exclusively relied on phenotypic characterization. We present a method based on a cyanine dye 3.18-labeled in situ hybridization probe targeting 16S rRNA to allow specific detection of bacteria belonging to the genus Gallibacterium. The probe, GAN850, showed no cross-reactivity to 25 other poultry-associated bacterial spe
