Rehabilitation nursing : the official journal of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses1991eng
The spiritual needs and resources of the rehabilitation patient vary. Several important spiritual issues tend to emerge for most patients: (a) purpose ("Why did God let this happen to me?"), (b) punishment ("Why is God punishing me?"), and (c) pain ("Why doesn't God stop my suffering?"). This article explores ways in which pastoral care can assist patients in working through these issues and maximizing their spiritual rehabilitative potential. The role of the rehabilitation nurse in this process is discussed.

The purpose of this study is to explore a theological perspective toward genetic counseling. A survey was sent to 207 ministers within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), to determine their perspectives toward four different scenarios in a prenatal genetic counseling setting. The four different scenarios included situations involving Huntington disease, Down syndrome, trisomy 18, and anencephaly. Nearly all ELCA Lutheran pastors perceived genetic counseling as beneficial and useful and wanted to be involved in the decision-making process for whether or not to terminate pregnancy

By welcoming laypersons into the pastoral ministry, the Church is participating in transformation--clearing away the familiar patterns of ministry so that the laity can respond more fully to its baptismal calling. Three basic questions should be asked in meeting the challenges of this calling: 1. Who should be chosen for lay pastoral care? Those selected should not be overly passive, but assertive and mature in their faith. 2. What should be expected of pastoral laypersons? Catholic hospitals should be careful not to exploit lay ministers by expecting extraordinary sacrifices (e.g., being on c

There is a growing public support for medical interventions at the End of Life (EoL), such as euthanasia and physician assisted suicide (EPAS) and palliative sedation (PS). This paper explores pastors' views and their pastoral care on the place of EPAS and PS and uses a 2.556 pastors' survey. Whereas only 38% were in favour of EPAS, more than 90% could justify PS. This paper analyses the differences in pastors' attitudes regarding EPAS versus PS.

The authors propose a model for different ways in which clergy of diverse denominations ritualize pregnancy loss through excerpts from 23 interviews with Chicago-area religious leaders. These clergy either do not ritualize pregnancy loss at all, adapt existing rituals, or create new ones.

Studies published in the last few years have suggested that the current practice in hospital obstetric units of encouraging parents to spend time with, hold, and even care for their stillborn fetus or baby may be deleterious to them. Rather than helping to allay grieving and successfully bring mourning to closure, mothers who had increasing levels of contact with the body of their stillborn baby were incrementally more likely to suffer depression and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in their next pregnancy and to have difficulty with attachment to their next child. These findings par

Spirituality is a difficult concept to define, one that is often understood differently by different cultures and religious communities. Illness constitutes a dramatic change in the ongoing flow and norms of a person's life, raising questions of the value or meaning of life, questions of self-worth, and questions of forgiveness, to ourselves and others. The profession of spiritual care comes to provide support in these areas. Originally focused on religious care, the profession has shifted to providing care for general spiritual well-being, where professionals care for all patients regardless

OBJECTIVE: To identify determinants of requesting pastoral care (PC) at the time of pregnancy termination for fetal anomalies.
METHODS: PC was provided by a hospital-based chaplain. Data were reviewed for 88 women who elected pregnancy termination. Nominal logistic regression and Kruskal-Wallis and Student t tests were used as appropriate.
RESULTS: None of 37 women who underwent dilatation and curettage (D&C) or dilatation and evacuation (D&E) requested PC as compared with 40 of 51 patients who underwent prostaglandin induction of labor (p < 0.001). The decision to seek PC was related to ges

Taking the heart into account while providing pastoral care to couples suffering from infertility is essential. The affective sphere is not irrational but has its own logic that needs to be addressed. Trying to bypass the wounds involved in something as painful as infertility by speaking merely to the mind can turn out to be counter-productive, especially when it comes to explaining the Church's teachings on artificial reproductive technologies. One first needs to connect on the level of the heart in an authentic way to bring some relief and initiate the healing-process before addressing the u

This article reports on case study research with four mothers who asked for help from their pastors when they learned, or had reason to believe, that their husbands had sexually abused children in their families. In their own words, mothers gave accounts of how the pastors responded. Some were helpful and knowledgeable, some appeared bewildered, and others were hostile and blaming toward the women. This article will sensitize pastors and other pastoral counselors to issues that child sexual abuse raises. In addition, the research responds to Mahoney's (J Marriage Fam 72:805-827, 2010) observat

Palliative pastoral care is not about "adding days to life, but about "adding life to days". It does not matter whether the dying process is short or long. What matters is to ensure the best possible quality of life until the very end through mindful companionship. Palliative pastoral care is a path towards a personal dying, dying where the person is taken seriously as an individual until the last moment. Palliative care includes medical assistance, careful care, psychosocial support, and counselling that addresses the spiritual needs of the dying. This palliative care includes inpatient and o

The Ebola Virus Disease is a contagious and highly fatal illness that up until recently had been geographically limited to remote areas of Africa. In 2014, Ebola patients have been transported to the United States for care or have been newly diagnosed in the United States. With the intensive medical care and isolation policies usually needed by these patients, we inquired whether pastoral care would be possible. Using clinical and canonical considerations, we analyzed the permissibility and logistical challenges pastoral care presents to the priests and lay ministers, as well as the healthcare

This article presents a subset of findings from a larger study exploring the lived experiences of 16 former residents of a 90-day emergency family shelter program in Los Angeles County. Interpretative phenomenological analysis serves as a qualitative method for understanding the cultural uniqueness of the "un-homeless homeless." The findings offer implications for culturally competent pastoral care and counseling in the context of family homelessness and attend to both the process and content of caregiving.

AIDS is unique in that it is terminal, transmissible, and surrounded by stigma. AIDS patients are often ostracized by those close to them and frequently they are alienated from religion. The pastoral care giver must provide a special ministry to AIDS patients, a ministry in which he or she accompanies the patient on a journey inward. This journey involves a broad range of feelings related to such concerns as social alienation, emotional isolation, and preparation for death. Its final destination, however, lies in the ultimate issues such as self-identity, the meaning of life, and individual de

BACKGROUND: The clinical teaching fellow (CTF) role is often taken by resident doctors between training programmes to develop skills within medical education. This project explored CTF experiences of pastoral care provision at one medical school in the United Kingdom (UK), specifically focusing on their own role and responsibilities to inform practical support strategies for doctors as future medical educators.
METHODS: This study adopted a qualitative, hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Five focus groups were conducted at different hospital sites where medical students undertake clinical

BACKGROUND: The death of a baby is recognised as one of the most difficult bereavements with life-long impact for parents. How bereaved parents are cared for influences their grief journey. Optimal holistic care is provided when the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of parents are attended to. This study reviewed how spiritual care is provided to bereaved parents following stillbirth in maternity units in Ireland and the impact of stillbirth on healthcare chaplains.
METHODS: This was a mixed methods study using semistructured qualitative interviews with hospital chaplains in Iri

The objective of the present study was to determine whether the Pennsylvania Inventory of Scrupulosity (PIOS) can effectively distinguish between individuals with clinically significant religious scrupulosity and those experiencing non-pathological religious concerns. To establish severity benchmarks for the PIOS, we utilized empirically derived cutoff points from the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) alongside self-reported lifetime diagnosis of OCD. The study involved 732 Polish adults, the majority of whom identified as Roman Catholic. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) an

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to explore Protestant religious leaders' attitudes towards abortion and their strategies for pastoral care in Georgia, USA. Religious leaders may play an important role in providing sexual and reproductive health pastoral care given a long history of supporting healing and health promotion.
METHODS: We conducted 20 in-depth interviews with Mainline and Black Protestant religious leaders on their attitudes toward abortion and how they provide pastoral care for abortion. The study was conducted in a county with relatively higher rates of abortion, lower a

In this focus group study with clerics from the Church of Sweden, the Catholic Church, and the Free Church Movement, experiences of pastoral care for victims of sexual abuse were explored. The material was analyzed using thematic analysis. The participants expressed a wish to offer the best care possible. However, insecurity, a perceived lack of psychological competences, and restrictions imposed by the vow of silence provoked self-protective strategies that may affect both clerics and confidants.
