Patellofemoral pain syndrome.

UNLABELLED: The patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a possible cause for anterior knee pain, which predominantly affects young female patients without any structural changes such as increased Q-angle or significant chondral damage. This literature review has shown that PFPS development is probably multifactorial with various functional disorders of the lower extremity. Biomechanical studies described patellar maltracking and dynamic valgus in PFPS patients (functional malalignment). Causes for the dynamic valgus may be decreased strength of the hip abductors or abnormal rear-foot eversion w

[Patellofemoral pain syndrome].

The patellofemoral pain syndrome is of high socioeconomic relevance as it most frequently occurs in young working patients. As its etiology is often unknown there is no standard treatment protocol. Several studies analyzed the different causes of patellofemoral pain and their different therapies. Static problems (pes planovalgus, instabilities, leg length differences) or chronic overuse of the knee extensor mechanism have to be identified and treated. After exclusion of intra-articular pathologies, the treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome begins with conservative management. Stretching of

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common causes of anterior knee pain encountered in the outpatient setting in adolescents and adults younger than 60 years. The incidence in the United States is between 3% and 6%. The cardinal feature of PFPS is pain in or around the anterior knee that intensifies when the knee is flexed during weight-bearing activities. The pain of PFPS often worsens with prolonged sitting or descending stairs. The most sensitive physical examination finding is pain with squatting. Examining a patient's gait, posture, and footwear can help identify contri

Patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a common problem that occurs in association with mild malalignment of the extensor mechanism of the knee or as a result of repetitive microtrauma from overuse. Patients most often present with retropatellar or peripatellar knee pain, which becomes especially noticeable when they climb or descend stairs. The diagnosis is usually made from the history and the physical examination, with relatively little information gained from other diagnostic aids. Treatment involves physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication and the application of ice. In most patients, surg

Exercise therapy for patellofemoral pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a common problem among adolescents and young adults, characterised by retropatellar pain (behind the kneecap) or peripatellar pain (around the kneecap) when ascending or descending stairs, squatting or sitting with flexed knees. Etiology, structures causing the pain and treatment methods are all debated in literature, but consensus has not been reached so far. Exercise therapy to strengthen the quadriceps is often prescribed, though its efficacy is still debated. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to summarise the evidence of effectiveness of exerc

New aetiology of patellofemoral pain syndrome.

We report the case of a 30-year-old man with more than 100 different male sexual partners per year. He reported using cocaine, ecstasy, γ-hydroxybutyric acid and crystal mephedrone and presented with bilateral gonalgia resistant to standard analgesia. He had no noteworthy medical history, and physical examination and laboratory tests were uninformative. MRI showed marked intra-articular effusion but no meniscus or ligament damage. The aetiological diagnosis in this case was made by excluding other potential causes. Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common and challenging i

Bone scan in the patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Eighty patients who complained of retropatellar pain underwent evaluation by bone scintigraphy, intraosseous pressure determination, radiography, arthroscopy and physical diagnostic tests. The bone scans showed that 48% of the painful knees had an increased uptake compared with 9% for the normal joints. A highly significant correlation was evident between an increased uptake and established chondromalacia. For the diagnosis of a high pressure patella, radiography was only 7% sensitive (6/88), compared with 44% (39/88) for bone scintigraphy and 78% for the clinical "sustained flexion" test. The

Knee orthoses for treating patellofemoral pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a painful musculoskeletal condition, which is characterised by knee pain located in the anterior aspect (front) and retropatellar region (behind) of the knee joint. Various non-operative interventions are suggested for the treatment of this condition. Knee orthoses (knee braces, sleeves, straps or bandages) are worn over the knee and are thought to help reduce knee pain. They can be used in isolation or in addition to other treatments such as exercise or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits

Patellofemoral pain syndrome: a review of current issues.

There is no clear consensus in the literature concerning the terminology, aetiology and treatment for pain in the anterior part of the knee. The term 'anterior knee pain' is suggested to encompass all pain-related problems. By excluding anterior knee pain due to intra-articular pathology, peripatellar tendinitis or bursitis, plica syndromes, Sinding Larsen's disease, Osgood Schlatter's disease, neuromas and other rarely occurring pathologies, it is suggested that remaining patients with a clinical presentation of anterior knee pain could be diagnosed with patello-femoral pain syndrome (PFPS).

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) for patellofemoral pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain syndrome, now generally referred to as patellofemoral pain (PFP), is one of the most common orthopaedic disorders, characterised by pain in the anterior or retropatellar knee region. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proposed generally as a complementary treatment, associated with other interventions such as exercise, or as a single treatment to increase muscle force, reduce knee pain, and improve function. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for people with patellofemoral pain. SEAR

Quadriceps femoris muscle activity in patellofemoral pain syndrome.

To elucidate and attempt to dissociate the two mechanisms, neuromuscular and mechanical, underlying patellofemoral pain syndrome, 18 subjects, divided into two groups based on a diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome and the knee Q angle, were studied. The control group was asymptomatic and exhibited a normal Q angle (mean, 8.25 degrees), whereas the other group, diagnosed as patellofemoral pain syndrome patients, reported knee pain and had an above-normal Q angle (mean, 21.05 degrees). All subjects were tested for isometric maximum knee extension at 90 degrees, 30 degrees, and 15 degrees o
