Paternal involvement after perinatal death.

This study describes paternal involvement after perinatal death in a large, mostly minority, lower socioeconomic status sample. Paternal presence at birth, holding the baby, and presence at a follow-up appointment were the indicators of paternal involvement. Perinatal death was defined as miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death within 12 hours of birth. Data were collected from a retrospective chart review under the auspices of the Perinatal Mortality Counseling Program at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, a tertiary care referral center in north central Florida. The sample incl

Shared Death Anxiety: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Advanced Paternal Age.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often emerges during childhood, presenting as distressing obsessions and compulsions that interfere with daily functioning. Advanced paternal age (APA) introduces unique psychosocial dynamics within families, potentially exacerbating stress, anxiety, and intergenerational emotional challenges. This case report examines the presentation of OCD in a 10-year-old boy, characterized by pervasive death anxiety shared with his 83-year-old father, whose advanced age intensifies existential concerns. The report delves into the complex interplay between APA, the child

[Depressive reactions in children following the loss of a paternal figure, by death or divorce].

A review of different viewpoints on the theme "Death and the child" is made. When the child loses a loved object, he has to accept it in the outside world and manage the changes in his inner world. If the lost object is very needed, his ability to comprehend death is obstructed. When and how it is possible to help the child to understand death, is also examined. Depending of the age, development stage, previous relationships with the dead person, each child reacts differently. Effects of divorce on children are studied. A method that provides better avenues for ellaboration to children is pres

Paternal family history of premature atherosclerotic disease and perinatal death: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported that pregnancies conceived by fathers with modifiable cardiovascular risk factors are at higher risk of ending in losses compared to those without such risk factors. Our objective was to examine the association between paternal family history _a non-modifiable risk factor_ of premature atherosclerotic disease and perinatal death. METHODS: This is a population-based cohort study. Information on fathers, aged 18-50 years who participated in three population-based health surveys conducted in Norway during 1974-2003 was linked to their singleton births registered

Paternal mosaicism for a novel PBX1 mutation associated with recurrent perinatal death: Phenotypic expansion of the PBX1-related syndrome.

Autosomal dominant (de novo) mutations in PBX1 are known to cause congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), with or without extra-renal abnormalities. Using trio exome sequencing, we identified a PBX1 p.(Arg107Trp) mutation in a deceased one-day-old neonate presenting with CAKUT, asplenia, and severe bilateral diaphragmatic thinning and eventration. Further investigation by droplet digital PCR revealed that the mutation had occurred post-zygotically in the father, with different variant allele frequencies of the mosaic PBX1 mutation in blood (10%) and sperm (20%). Paternal smoking and germ cell death: A mechanistic link to the effects of cigarette smoke on spermatogenesis and possible long-term sequelae in offspring.

Paternal exposure to constituents of cigarette smoke (CS) is reportedly associated with infertility, birth defects and childhood cancers even though the mechanism behind this relationship is still unclear. Chronic cigarette smoking by men leads to poor sperm quality and quantity mainly through oxidative stress and also direct assault by CS metabolites. Among several carcinogenic and teratogenic components of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) display a preeminent role in accelerating germ cell death via the cytoplasmic transcription factor, aryl hydrocarb

The First-Year Mortality Rates of Singleton Infants Born at Term of US-Born and Foreign-Born Women: The Effect of Paternal Acknowledgment.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the whether a greater percentage of deaths of infants born at term among US-born (vs foreign-born) women is attributable to paternal nonacknowledgement. STUDY DESIGN: Using a cross-sectional population-based design, stratified and multivariable binomial regression analyses were performed on a subset of the 2017 National Center for Health Statistics linked live birth-infant death cohort dataset of singleton infants born at term (37-42 weeks) of US-born (N = 2 127 243) and foreign-born (N = 334 664) women. RESULTS: Infants of US-born women had a prevalence of paternal n

Causal Associations between Paternal Longevity and Risks of Cardiovascular Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have suggested that paternal longevity is associated with reduced risks of cardiovascular diseases, yet the causal association remains to be determined. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether Mendelian randomization (MR) results support a causal role of paternal longevity for risks of cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: Genetic variants associated with paternal longevity and cardiovascular diseases were obtained from public genome-wide association study data. We used inverse variance weighted MR under a random-effects model to provide causal estimates between pate

Are the children of fathers whose jobs involve contact with many people at an increased risk of leukaemia?

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the hypothesis that children of men whose jobs involve contact with many people (particularly children) are at an increased risk of leukaemia. METHODS: A population based dataset obtained from routinely collected death certificates involving 14,168 cancer deaths occurring before the age of 15 years registered in England and Wales between 1959-63 and 1970-90. Associations were assessed with the proportional cancer mortality ratio (PCMR), with all childhood cancer deaths forming the standard for comparison. The PCMRs were adjusted, by stratification, for age and year

A case of paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 11.

We report a case of paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 11 that presented as severe intrauterine growth retardation. Autopsy following intrauterine death also revealed aberrant intestinal rotation and hypospadias. Chromosome analysis of direct preparations from placental biopsy showed an abnormal 47,XY,+11 karyotype. Analysis of long-term cultures from the placenta revealed 46,XY/47,XY,+11 mosaicism. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies on interphase nuclei confirmed trisomy 11 in multiple placental sites but detected only disomic cells in fetal skin. Investigation using mi

Paternal occupation and anencephaly.

It has been suggested that paternal occupational exposures to pesticides and solvents increase the risk of neural tube defects in offspring. With the use of Texas livebirth, fetal death, and linked livebirth-death records, the authors conducted a population-based case-control study among 1981-1986 Texas births to examine the association between paternal occupation and anencephalic births. Fathers employed in occupations associated with solvent exposure were more likely to have offspring with anencephaly (odds ratio (OR) = 2.53), with painters having the highest risk (OR = 3.43). A lesser assoc

Maternal versus paternal living kidney transplant donation is associated with lower rejection in young pediatric recipients: A Collaborative Transplant Study report.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1700 children per year with end-stage kidney disease undergo kidney transplantation in Europe and the United States of America; 30%-50% are living donor kidney transplantations. There may be immunological differences between paternal and maternal donors due to transplacental exchange of cells between the mother and fetus during pregnancy leading to microchimerism. We investigated whether the outcome of living-related kidney transplantation in young children is different after maternal compared with paternal organ donation. METHODS: Using the international Collaborati

Missing paternal data and adverse birth outcomes in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Research on predictors of birth outcomes tends to focus on maternal characteristics. Less is known about the role of paternal factors. Missing paternal data on administrative records may be a marker for risk of adverse birth outcomes. DATA AND METHODS: Analyses were performed on a cohort of births that occurred from May 16, 2004 through May 15, 2006, which was created by linking birth and death registration data with the 2006 Canadian census. Log-binomial and binomial regression were used to estimate relative risks and risk differences for preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age

Paternal involvement in childcare and unintentional injury of young children: a population-based cohort study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in young children. A previous study reported the protective effect of maternal parenting on young childhood injury; however, few studies have shown an association between paternal involvement in childcare and young childhood injury. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of paternal involvement in childcare to reduce the likelihood of childhood injury. METHODS: A population-based birth cohort study in Japan (2001-02), the 'Longitudinal Survey of Babies Born in 21st Century', was used (n = 42 144). The impact of pat

Maternal family history of diabetes is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in women with type 2 diabetes: the Fremantle Diabetes Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether parental family history of diabetes influences cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We studied 1,294 type 2 diabetic patients (mean age 64.1 years, 51.2% female) recruited to a community-based cohort study from 1993 to 1996 and followed until mid-2006. A data linkage system assessed all-cause and cardiac mortality, incident myocardial infarction, and stroke. Cox proportional hazards modeling was used to determine the influence of maternal or paternal family history on these outcomes. RESULTS: A maternal family history of d

Paternal age and 13 psychiatric disorders in the offspring: a population-based cohort study of 7 million children in Taiwan.

Although paternal age has been linked to certain psychiatric disorders, the nature of any causal relationship remains elusive. Here, we aimed to comprehensively assess the magnitude of a wide range of offspring's psychiatric risk conferred by paternal age, leveraging a pedigree inferred from covered-insurance relationship (accuracy >98%) in Taiwan's single-payer compulsory insurance program. We also examined whether there is an independent role of paternal age and explored the potential effect of parental age difference. A total cohort of 7,264,788 individuals born between 1980 and 2018 were i

Outcomes of Pregnancies With Maternal/Paternal Exposure in the Tofacitinib Safety Databases for Ulcerative Colitis.

BACKGROUND: Active inflammatory bowel disease increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Tofacitinib is an oral, small molecule Janus kinase inhibitor for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). As a small molecule, tofacitinib is likely to cross the placental barrier; however, information on the effects of tofacitinib on pregnancy outcomes is limited. We report pregnancy and newborn outcomes among patients in UC clinical studies with prenatal (maternal/paternal) exposure to tofacitinib. METHODS: Pregnancies with maternal/paternal exposure to tofacitinib were identified and outcomes
