Hyperprolactinemia in women with paternal deprivation during childhood.

It was reported that most females with prolactinoma, idiopathic hyperprolactinemia, or euprolactinemic galactorrhea were reared either without their father or with an alcoholic, violent father. To gain further insight into this association, a group of sisters of patients with prolactinoma (generally exposed to the same environment as the patients') and a control group were studied. Women with paternal deprivation during childhood differed from the women who had normal childhoods in that they had: 1) higher mean serum prolactin concentration (14.7 versus 9.4 ng/mL; P less than .001); 2) higher

Paternal sleep deprivation and cardiac dysfunction in offspring: A perspective of myocardial hypertrophy.

The objective of this work is to assess the effects and potential process of paternal acute sleep deprivation on cardiac function in their offspring. Male and female C57BL/6N mice aged 8-9 weeks (n = 4-5 mice/group) were used. Male mice were selected to construct an acute sleep deprivation model using the modified multiple platform method (MMPM) and mated with normal female mice. After gestation, the weight change of offspring mice was observed and recorded. At the time of 10 weeks, the changes of cardiac function were evaluated by blood pressure, heart rate and echocardiography; cardiac histo

Welfare paternalism and the paradox of protection: towards a rights-based framework to mediate the deprivation of liberty of children.

This article examines the acute ambiguity in the law governing the deprivation of liberty of children in England and Wales, where protective interventions often rely on judicial direction and on unclear statutory safeguards. It is argued that the current framework is reactive, welfare-driven, and lacking in procedural coherence. Drawing upon Fineman's theory of vulnerability, Fraser's parity of participation, and Lundy's analysis of children's agency in relation to the participatory guarantees of Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the article reconceptualiz

Neonatal paternal deprivation impairs social recognition and alters levels of oxytocin and estrogen receptor α mRNA expression in the MeA and NAcc, and serum oxytocin in mandarin voles.

Paternal care is necessary for the healthy development of social behavior in monogamous rodents and social recognition underpins social behavior in these animals. The effects of paternal care on the development of social recognition and underlying neuroendocrine mechanisms, especially the involvement of oxytocin and estrogen pathways, remain poorly understood. We investigated the effects of paternal deprivation (PD: father was removed from neonatal pups and mother alone raised the offspring) on social recognition in mandarin voles (Microtus mandarinus), a socially monogamous rodent. Paternal d

The Relationship Between Parental Psychological Control and College Students' Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Chain Mediation Roles of Relative Deprivation and Depression and the Moderating Role of Peer Relationships.

Previous research has demonstrated that parental psychological control increases the likelihood of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among college students. However, the underlying mechanisms of this association remain unclear. This study aims to investigate whether relative deprivation and depression serve as chain mediators in the relationship between paternal/maternal psychological control and NSSI, while also examining the moderating role of peer relationships. A total of 1158 college students (48.3% female; Mage = 19.26 years) completed assessments measuring parental psychological control,

Effects on the behavior of infant common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) of separation from caregivers and of drug-induced reduction in caregiver responsiveness.

The effects of separating 4-week-old twin marmosets for 8 days from their families are compared with the effects of leaving 4-week-old infants with their families, but reducing the responsiveness of their caregivers for 8 days by administration of the tranquilizer fluphenazine decanoate. Both treatments reduce infant mobility, abolish play, and increase the time that infants spend with each other. During the period after the termination of the treatment, both treatment groups continue to play and move less than controls, and try to climb onto the mothers more frequently. These results are cons

Recall of parental behaviors in female neurotic depressives.

Twenty-four neurotic depressive females and 24 female anxiety neurotics were compared on a 90-item questionnaire that concerned recall of parental behavior. Relative to anxiety neurotics, the neurotic depressives recalled fathers as unloving disciplinarians and recalled mothers as difficult to please, intrusive and controlling, and possibly more concerned with their own than with their children's needs. Previous findings that parents of depressives are recalled as depriving were supported, and a methodology for differentiating neurotic depressives from anxiety neurotics was described.

Changes in patients with gender-identity problems after parental death.

The authors studied the incidence of parental loss among 163 gender-disordered patients and an equal number of psychiatric control patients. An unusually high number of gender-disordered patients had lost their fathers, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood. Many of these patients showed shifts in gender identity in the year after loss, and during that period many requested surgical sex reassignment for the first time. Changes in the patient's relationship with the remaining parent and experiences related to loss of the father are discussed.

Lesbian mothers who conceived after donor insemination: a follow-up study.

This study investigated the development of family relationships in lesbian families who conceived after donor insemination (DI). The main characteristics of this unknown family structure were analysed. An anonymous donor was used to conceive, the family unit consisted of two mothers and a father was non-existent, and both women had a homosexual orientation. A total of 50 lesbian couples who conceived after DI with children aged between 1 and 2 years participated in this study, using a standardized interview created for this study. After the birth of their child, 56% of the lesbian mothers (n =

Perceived parental characteristics and reports of early parental deprivation in agoraphobic patients.

It is commonly believed that patients with agoraphobia have suffered more frequently from aberrant family experiences in childhood. Some authors have described an excess of parental deprivation and others have incriminated parental overprotectiveness. Recent studies have failed to confirm these impressions but, instead, find that agoraphobic patients recall deficits in parental warmth and care during their early years. This report of a Sydney case-control study adds support to the view that parental overprotectiveness in isolation is unlikely to place the child at greater risk of developing ag

Individual deprivation, regional deprivation, and risk for oral clefts in Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of individual low socioeconomic status (SES) and deprived geographical area (GA) on the occurrence of isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL±P) in Argentina. METHODS: This case-control study included 577 newborns with isolated CL±P and 13 344 healthy controls, born between 1992 and 2001, from a total population of 546 129 births in 39 hospitals in Argentina. Census data on unsatisfied basic needs were used to establish the degree of geographical area deprivation. An SES index for each individual was established, using ma

Polyuria and polydipsia in a young child: diagnostic considerations and identification of novel mutation causing familial neurohypophyseal diabetes insipidus.

A 3-year 5-month-old boy was seen for second opinion regarding polydipsia and polyuria. Previously, a diagnosis of primary polydipsia was made after normal urine concentration after overnight water deprivation testing. The boy's father, paternal grandfather, and paternal aunt had diabetes insipidus treated with desmopressin acetate. Based on this young boy's symptoms, ability to concentrate urine after informal overnight water deprivation, and family history of diabetes insipidus, we performed AVP gene mutation testing. Analysis of the AVP gene revealed a novel mutation G54E that changes a nor

Parental Migration, Children's Safety and Psychological Adjustment in Rural China: A Meta-Analysis.

Studies concerning left-behind children in rural China have shown that parental absence due to migration is associated with greater risk of child victimization and accidental injuries, and a range of psychosocial problems. The authors conducted this meta-analysis to determine the extent to which left-behind children are affected by parental migration, as compared to children in nonmigrant rural families. A comprehensive literature search was conducted, and 90 studies published before 2017 were included in the data synthesis and analysis. The results revealed that compared to non-left-behind ch

Perceived depriving parental rearing and depression.

Four groups of depressed patients 47 unipolars, 21 bipolars, 34 with neurotic-reactive depression, and 39 with unspecified depressive disorder completed, after recovery, the EMBU, a Swedish instrument aimed at assessing the experience of parental rearing practices. The results for three factors: "rejection", "emotional warmth" and "over-protection" and the global judgement scores of "severity" and "consistency" in rearing attitudes were compared with those obtained from 205 healthy individuals. Intergenerational transmission of adverse childhood experiences: Differential maternal and paternal associations with offspring mental health in Chinese school-aged children by multi-method.

BACKGROUND: While parental adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are recognized risk factors on offspring's mental health, particularly depression and anxiety, critical gaps persist regarding: (1) differential maternal vs paternal effects, (2) dimensional versus cumulative risk effects, and (3) buffering roles of parental and offspring factors. This study firstly, aimed to investigate the associations between parental ACEs and depression and anxiety symptoms in their school-aged children using five complementary ACEs approaches: the single adversity model, accumulating risk model, dimensional m

Loss of parent in childhood and adult psychiatric disorder: the role of lack of adequate parental care.

The inconclusiveness of the literature on the role of loss of parent in influencing psychiatric disorder in adulthood is well known. A number of reasons involving sampling, location and other methodological features, are given to account for these contradictory findings. A study specially designed to cope with these features is then described and basic results are reported. These indicate that, in a sample of women aged 18-65, loss of mother before the age of 17, either by death or by separation of one year or more, was associated with clinical depression in the year of interview. Loss of fath
