Impact of a Mobility Team on Intensive Care Unit Patient Outcomes.

Mobility for critically ill patients has been found to be safe, beneficial, and feasible, although a culture of immobility prevails in many adult intensive care units (ICU) because of staffing challenges and lack of physical therapy and occupational therapy involvement. Clinical practice guidelines recommended early mobility for ICU patients to improve long- and short-term outcomes. Addition of a mobility team to the licensed physical therapy and occupational therapy staff and interprofessional ICU team improved patient outcomes and staff satisfaction, and reduced facility cost related to empl

Care Team Response to Patient Portal Message Content and Writing Style.

IMPORTANCE: Patient portal messages are an increasingly central channel for patient-clinician communication, but there are inequities in how responsive care teams are to messages sent by patients from historically marginalized groups. The reasons driving these disparities are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To quantify factors that could potentially explain lower rates of care team response to messages sent by patients from historically marginalized groups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used natural language processing to systematically extract message content

Skin care in burn patients: a team approach.

Skin care is an important but often neglected issue in burn management. Newly healed burn skin is fragile, itchy, dry, and susceptible to sunburn. Without proper skin care in burn patients, they may suffer from sleep and mood disturbances, depression, and poor compliance to treatment that can jeopardize the rehabilitation process. At the Prince of Wales Hospital, skin care has been managed since February 1996 by a team consisting of plastic surgeon, dermatologist, occupational therapist and nursing specialist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a skin care program run by a

INTRODUCTION: With a critical primary care clinician shortage, team-based care (TBC) is under development to enhance access, especially in rural regions. However, there has been limited discussion about TBC from the patient's perspective. We explored rural patient preferences for composition of their current and ideal primary health care team. METHODS: An anonymous online survey of rural residents was conducted within the Kootenay-Boundary region of British Columbia. The survey included demographic information and current and ideal health care team composition. Descriptive statistics were use

Patient Engagement with General Bulk Outreach: Impact of Primary Care Provider vs. Care Team Signature in General Bulk Patient Outreach.

Bulk messaging is an important population health tool used to engage patients in preventive care and chronic disease management, yet little is known about optimal formatting of the communication. One factor to consider is whether the signatory of the patient-facing communication is the patient's own Primary Care Provider (PCP) or a generic care team signature. In this quasi-randomized, non-blinded study we compared identical generic bulk outreach messages directed toward patients with an upcoming appointment and invited them to self-schedule a Medicare Annual wellness visit prior to their sche

Early Stages of Alzheimer's Disease: Evolving the Care Team for Optimal Patient Management.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that creates complex challenges and a significant burden for patients and caregivers. Although underlying pathological changes due to AD may be detected in research studies decades prior to symptom onset, many patients in the early stages of AD remain undiagnosed in clinical practice. Increasing evidence points to the importance of an early and accurate AD diagnosis to optimize outcomes for patients and their families, yet many barriers remain along the diagnostic journey. Through a series of international working group meeti

[Palliative care in patients without cancer: Impact of the end-of-life care team].

Palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life-threatening illnesses by promoting the prevention and relief of suffering. Palliative care in Japan has been developed mainly for cancer patients. At the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, an end-of-life care team (EOLCT) has been developed to promote palliative care for patients without cancer. In the first 6 months of its operation, 109 requests were received by the team, 40% of which were for patients without cancer or related disease, including dementia, frailty due

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in a Patient with Severe Inhalation Injury: Multidisciplinary Burn Team Care.

INTRODUCTION: Inhalation injury is a major risk factor for mortality in burn patients via 3 primary mechanisms: airway edema and obstruction, hypoxemic respiratory failure, and pneumonia. Currently, the mainstay of treatment is supportive care to include early intubation, lung-protective or high-frequency-percussive mechanical ventilation, nebulized heparin, and aggressive pulmonary toilet. Despite these treatments, a subset of these patients progress to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) for which rescue options are limited. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old woman was found dow

The Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease: A Patient-Centred Conversation with the Care Team.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder which accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases, affecting approximately 10 million people in Europe. Neuroimaging techniques and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers used in combination with cognitive assessment tools open the door to early diagnosis of AD. However, these tools present some challenges that need to be overcome, such as low sensitivity or specificity, high cost, limited availability or invasiveness. Thus, low-cost and non-invasive alternatives, such as plasma biomarkers, have the potential to drive changes in AD screening and diagn

Primary Care for Veterans Experiencing Homelessness: a Narrative Review of the Homeless Patient Aligned Care Team (HPACT) Model.

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Veterans Health (VA) implemented a homeless-tailored primary care medical home model called the Homeless Patient Aligned Care Teams (HPACTs). The impact of HPACTs on health and healthcare outcomes of veterans experiencing homelessness has not been adequately synthesized. This narrative review summarized peer-reviewed studies published in databases Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, and APA PsycInfo from 1946 to February 2022. Only original research studies that reported outcomes of the HPACT model were included in the review. Of 575 studies that were initially identifie
