Patient comfort in audiological testing.

A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the relative comfort of a comprehensive range of diagnostic procedures. The mean comfort ranking and variability in comfort were examined. Pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry are the most comfortable tests, while caloric testing and transtympanic electrocochleography are the least comfortable. However, caloric testing and glycerol dehydration are not significantly different in comfort to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and brainstem evoked response testing is more comfortable than other diagnostic tests, including MRI. The reasons fo

Advancing perioperative care: introducing patient-centered comfort management.

The perioperative patient-centered comfort management (2P2CM) model introduces a transformative approach to surgical care, prioritizing patient comfort, psychological well-being, and satisfaction across the perioperative continuum. Unlike traditional models that focus primarily on clinical outcomes, the 2P2CM model emphasizes a holistic framework that integrates preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative interventions tailored to individual patient needs. This review synthesizes the emerging evidence supporting the 2P2CM model, which aims to alleviate preoperative anxiety, optimize postop

Improving Patient Comfort in MRI with Predictive Acoustic Noise Cancelling.

With sound pressure levels reaching up to 130 dB, acoustic noise in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the main sources of patient discomfort in otherwise one of the safest medical imaging modalities. In this work, a noise prediction-based approach, termed predictive noise cancelling (PNC), is applied, for the first time, to suppress noise in MRI. In PN C the noise from the scanner gradient coils is predicted based on linear time-invariant models, which relate the individual gradient coil (X, Y and Z) input to the acoustic noise output. A model setup was constructed of a custom speaker

Assessing the impact of ureteral stent design on patient comfort.

PURPOSE: We assessed the near term comfort of newly designed ureteral study stents or marketed control stents, including Polaris and Percuflex stents. Study stents had distal 6Fr pigtail ends with 3Fr or less loops. Decreased material in situ was hypothesized to enhance comfort. Usefulness of the patient self-administered Ureteral Stent Symptoms Questionnaire (Stone Management Unit, Southmead Hospital, United Kingdom) was assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This 4-arm multicenter study enrolled adults requiring retrograde unilateral ureteral stent placement for 4 to 28 days. Ureteral Stent Sympt

Patient-controlled analgesia: Finding a balance between cost and comfort.

PURPOSE: Despite the growing movement in acute pain management, acute postoperative pain continues to be undermanaged. Although numerous clinical practice guidelines for pain management have been published throughout the last 12 years, inadequate pain relief remains a significant health care issue. Insufficient dosage of analgesics is a common problem, and therapy for those patients still with pain represents a considerable health care dilemma. SUMMARY: Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) refers to a process in which patients determine when and how much medication they receive, regardless of a

From patient to partner: reflections on being a patient leader in the COMFORT Nursing Programme.

BACKGROUND: Meaningful patient and public involvement (PPI) is increasingly recognised as an important component of health research. However, relatively few publications describe patient involvement from the first-person perspective of a patient partner or patient leader. This commentary reflects on my experience as a patient leader in the COMFORT Nursing Programme, a research programme developing person-centred approaches to symptom management for people living with advanced kidney disease and their informal caregivers. MAIN BODY: I reflect on my experiences as a person living with kidney fa

Enhancing Patient Comfort in Aesthetic BoNT-A Injections: Mechanical Versus Topical Analgesia.

INTRODUCTION: Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is widely used in aesthetic medicine to treat dynamic facial rhytides. Despite its well-established safety and efficacy, BoNT-A injections often induce discomfort and anxiety owing to injection-related pain, especially in sensitive facial areas. Although topical anesthetic creams are commonly employed to alleviate pain, they have limitations, such as delayed onset and local side effects. Mechanical analgesic devices, based on the gate control theory of pain, have emerged as promising non-pharmacological alternatives. METHODS: In this prospective,

Advanced Orthosis for Radial Nerve Palsy: Improving Daily Function and Patient Comfort.

This article presents an innovative orthosis designed to improve function and patient comfort in individuals with radial nerve palsy. Current orthotic designs often fail to balance wrist stabilization with flexibility, leading to suboptimal functional recovery. Our proposed orthosis incorporates a dorsal plastic base and a volar traction system to enable wrist and finger extension while maintaining a low-profile design. Compared with existing designs, this orthosis enhances grip strength, minimizes bulkiness, and optimizes patient compliance. Clinical observations suggest that the proposed ort

Effects of Listening to Music on the Comfort of Chemotherapy Patients.

The symptoms of an illness that requires chemotherapy and the corresponding effects of such treatment exacerbate the pain and discomfort that patients typically experience. Listening to music may help patients cope with chemotherapy symptoms, thereby contributing to their physical ease and well-being. Seventy patients who were receiving treatment at the outpatient chemotherapy unit were invited to participate in this work. During chemotherapy sessions and the week after the sessions, the patients listened to music with headphones. The occurrence of chemotherapy symptoms such as pain, tiredness
