Medical debt in America, part III: Debt collection.

In the first two parts of the series, we described the sources of high prices in health care and the severe constraints faced by low-income patients when seeking to access care without incurring medical debt. In this third and final installment, we examine the origins of aggressive medical debt collection practices, their deleterious consequences for patients, and potential solutions.

Alternative sources of injury account recovery.

Obtaining full, prompt payment for healthcare services rendered is critical for physicians and healthcare organizations. A little-known type of insurance--medical payments insurance--can help providers obtain payment for services provided to injured patients. Medical payments insurance riders are attached to some automobile insurance policies and to virtually all residential and commercial property insurance policies. In some instances, medical payments insurance can be collected directly from an injured patient's insurer, and determining fault is not an issue.

Patient debt management and student academic progress.

A survey of the patient debt management policies of all U.S.-accredited dental and dental hygiene educational programs was taken to assess institutional patient debt management procedures and their relationship to student academic progress. The policies were evaluated to determine the level of compliance with existing standards and to analyze them in light of their legal implications relative to student rights. The results illustrated a vast breadth of policies for both dental and dental hygiene programs, ranging from no relationship between debt management and student progress, to an unspecif

Application of Fabric-Type Spinal Orthosis for Flexible Neuromuscular Scoliosis: A Preliminary Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study used a 3-point pressure spinal orthosis made of fabric material in neuromuscular scoliosis patients with flexible spinal curve to evaluate the in-brace correction of the spinal curve and to estimate changes in pulmonary function associated with brace wearing. DESIGN: Twenty-eight children with neuromuscular scoliosis with spinal curve flexibility of more than 50% were enrolled. A custom-made 3-point pressure spinal orthosis was fitted for each patient. Lumbar Bracing for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: We performed this study to evaluate the effect of back bracing to treat patients with chronic low back pain. METHODS: This was a prospective, unblinded, randomized controlled trial of 61 adults with uncomplicated chronic low back pain (>12 wks) and imaging findings of degenerative spondylosis, to assess the effectiveness of a semirigid back brace. All study participants received back school instruction. The treatment group also received a lumbar orthosis and was instructed to wear it as needed for symptom relief. At baseline, 6 wks, 12 wks, and 6 mos after intervention, we collected:

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that confers a substantial financial burden to patients. The aim of the current study was to assess the patient-reported financial impact of HS. Patients presenting to a wound center between 2010 and 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographics, comorbidities, and disease characteristics were collected. The financial impact of HS was assessed via the Comprehensive Score for Financial Toxicity - Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (COST-FACIT) version 2 and investigator-generated surveys.
