Cardiac rehabilitation programs and the problem of patient dropout.

As one of the leading causes of death in the United States, coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CAHD) has been shown to have a reduced incidence if the principles of primary prevention are instituted to reduce cardiac risk factors. In people who already suffer from CAHD, employing secondary prevention such as controlling hypertension, reducing serum lipid levels, eliminating nicotine intake, reducing stress, losing weight, and increasing exercise habits can decrease recurrence of problems related to CAHD. Cardiac rehabilitation programs are a way to help CAHD patients restore optimal medic

Associations between patient personality, symptomatic change and therapy dropout.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that 16% to 77% of psychotherapy patients abandon therapy within the first sessions. The aim of this study is to examine how patient personality variables, specifically the patients' structural integration and the personality traits dependency and self-criticism, are associated with symptomatic change and therapy dropout. METHOD: We analysed data from 96 patients (age: M = 30.56, SD = 11.39; 78.5% women; 44.6% students, 28.3% employees). A hierarchical logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine whether patients' structural integration (assessed via the

Predictors of psychotherapy dropout in patients with borderline personality disorder: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a highly debilitating psychiatric condition. Despite the expansion of new BPD specific forms of psychotherapy in the last few decades, high dropout rates have been reported in these treatments. Treatment discontinuation is associated with poor patient outcomes, inefficient resource utilization and the demoralization of healthcare providers. METHODS: In order to identify predictors of psychotherapy dropout among patients with BPD, a systematic search of Medline, the Cochrane Library, PsycInfo and PsycArticles was conducted. Studies include

Cardiac rehabilitation program: An exploration of patient experiences and perspectives on program dropout.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation programs (CRP) are effective evidence-based secondary prevention programs that reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, participation remains suboptimal, resulting in under-treatment and greater risk for recurrent cardiac events. Understanding the reasons behind CRP dropout is urgently needed to inform the development of programs that best meet patient needs and support sustained engagement. AIMS: The aim of this study was to identify and understand factors impacting CRP dropout from the patient perspective. MET

The causes of patient dropout from penile self-injection therapy for impotence.

PURPOSE: Penile self-injection therapy, a second line treatment for erectile dysfunction, is the most efficacious means of reestablishing functional erections when first line therapies fail and the patient wants to avoid penile prosthesis implantation. Despite high efficacy rates, injection therapy has high dropout rates. To our knowledge studies to date analyzing patient attrition have reviewed small numbers of patients followed for only short periods. We elucidate the main reasons for patient dropout in a large penile self-injection program with long-term followup. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A

Prolonged exposure in patients with chronic PTSD: predictors of treatment outcome and dropout.

The present study investigated predictors of treatment outcome and dropout in two samples of PTSD-patients with mixed traumas treated using prolonged imaginal exposure. Possible predictors were analysed in both samples separately, in order to replicate in one sample findings found in the other. The only stable finding across the two groups was that patients who showed more PTSD-symptoms at pre-treatment, showed more PTSD-symptoms at post-treatment and follow-up. Indications were found that benzodiazepine use was related to both treatment outcome and dropout, and alcohol use to dropout. Demogra

Predictors of treatment dropout in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder due to childhood abuse.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about patient characteristics predicting treatment dropout for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is scarce, whereas more understanding about this topic may give direction to address this important issue. METHOD: Data were obtained from a randomized controlled trial in which a phase-based treatment condition (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing [EMDR] therapy preceded by Skills Training in Affect and Interpersonal Regulation [STAIR]; n = 57) was compared with a direct trauma-focused treatment (EMDR therapy only; n = 64) in people with a PTSD due to childhood
