BACKGROUND: Past efforts to assess patient navigation on cancer screening utilization have focused on one-time uptake, which may not be sufficient in the long term. This is partially due to limited resources for in-person, longitudinal patient navigation. We examine the effectiveness of a low-intensity phone- and mail-based navigation on multiple screening episodes with a focus on screening uptake after receiving noncancerous results during a previous screening episode.
METHODS: The is a secondary analysis of patients who participated in a randomized controlled patient navigation trial in Chi

Patient navigation is generally defined as an individualized service that breaks down barriers to provide comprehensive and equitable cancer care. As the evidence base grows for patient navigation efficacy in diverse settings across the cancer continuum, navigation is increasingly recognized and adopted as an essential resource to aid in linking to and advocating for patient-centered services. To further patient navigation as a core component of cancer care, the American Cancer Society formed the Global Alliance for Cancer Patient Navigation to build awareness, evidence, and momentum and to co

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a promising treatment for hematological diseases, yet access barriers like cost and limited transplant centers persist. Telemedicine-based patient navigation (PN) has emerged as a solution. This study presents a cost-free PN telemedicine clinic (TC) in collaboration with the National Marrow Donor Program.
AIM: to assess its feasibility and impac on HCT access determined by the cumulative incidence of transplantation.
METHODS: In this single-center cohort study, patients of all ages and diagnoses referred for HCT participated. Two transp

Patient navigation (PN) is increasingly used to help people overcome barriers to accessing health care. In a recent trial, PN was added to motivational interviewing (MI) to help patients discharged from detoxification (detox) transition to follow-up care. The goal was to test whether PN in addition to MI increased transition rates and reduced subsequent readmissions into detox compared with MI alone. Results demonstrated little evidence of a treatment effect on either of these two outcomes, but post hoc exploratory analyses showed that patients who received PN were less likely to be arrested i

OBJECTIVE: Patient navigation is a process that provides assistance to referring physicians in arranging further investigations and consultation for defined patient groups. This can facilitate timely investigations and potentially minimize delays. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of patient navigation on timeliness in the diagnosis of breast abnormalities.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied a cohort of 536 women who underwent breast core biopsy at our institution during comparable 6-month periods in 1999 and 2000 to determine the effects of patient navigation, age, and b

Severe mental illness (SMI) is associated with chronic courses, significant functional impairments, and increased mortality. At the same time, care for this population is characterized by fragmentation, lack of continuity, and insufficient coordination. Against this background, patient navigation has gained importance as an approach to improving the quality and efficiency of care. The aim of this narrative review is to present key evidence-based models of care for individuals with SMI, to analyze structural challenges in service provision, and to derive principles for effective patient navigat

BACKGROUND: Former prison inmates experience high rates of hospitalizations and death during the transition from prison to the community, particularly from drug-related causes and early after release. The authors designed a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of patient navigation to reduce barriers to health care and hospitalizations for former prison inmates.
METHODS: Forty former prison inmates with a history of drug involvement were recruited and randomized within 15 days after prison release. Participants were randomized to receive 3 months of patient navigation (PN) with facilitated enrol

BACKGROUND: We implemented a centralized colorectal cancer (CRC) screening program with navigation to follow-up colonoscopy for community health center (CHC) patients with positive stool-based test screening results. Navigation increased six-month colonoscopy completion by 24 percentage points compared with usual care. Here, we describe how we applied a functions and forms framework alongside causal loop diagramming (CLD) to understand the effectiveness of our navigation program and explore its potential for implementation in other settings.
METHODS: We first identified barriers to colonoscop

PURPOSE: Hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic health condition among adults in the United States. Rural adults face disproportionately high rates of hearing loss and numerous systemic barriers to hearing health care (HHC). This study aims to explore experiences of hearing loss, identify factors that impact access, and assess the potential acceptability of a patient navigation program. Perspectives of patients experiencing hearing loss and rural health care providers are vital for designing an intervention that addresses barriers to HHC experienced in rural settings.

BACKGROUND: Substance use during the perinatal period (i.e., pregnancy through the first year postpartum) can pose significant maternal and infant health risks. However, access to lifesaving medications and standard care remains low for perinatal persons who use substances. This lack of substance use disorder treatment access stems from fragmented services, stigma, and social determinants of health-related barriers that could be addressed using patient navigators. This systematic review describes patient navigation models of care for perinatal people who use substances and associated outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is limited high-quality evidence about the impact of patient navigation (PN) on outcomes for patients with diagnosed cancer.
METHODS: We pooled data from two sites from the national Patient Navigation Research Program. Patients (n = 438) with newly diagnosed breast (n = 353) or colorectal cancer (n = 85) were randomized to PN or usual care. Trained lay navigators met with patients randomized to PN to help them assess treatment barriers and identify resources to overcome barriers. We used intent-to-treat analysis to assess time to completion of primary treatment, psychologic

BACKGROUND: Patient navigators are increasingly utilized in cancer care but ensuring patients are properly identified and referred to navigators is a significant challenge. The primary objective was to compare time from radiographic report to biopsy, oncology visit, and treatment before versus after implementation of a computationally assisted navigation referral stream. Secondary objectives included evaluating care delivery across demographic groups and assessing survival outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A quality initiative at Northwell Health compared care delivery metrics between 2 cohort

BackgroundNavigation programs for patients with cancer improve access and continuity of care, yet their digital transformation is often limited by poor usability and inadequate uptake. Applying user-centered and human-centered design (UCD/HCD) principles may close this gap, but the extent to which such design methods are used and evaluated in oncology navigation tools remains unclear.ObjectiveThis scoping review identifies how UCD/HCD principles have been, and should be, applied in developing and implementing digital health tools for navigation for patients with cancer.MethodsA scoping review

Background: Cervical cancer remains a significant health issue in Indonesia, where structural barriers, fragmented information, and sociocultural norms continue to hinder timely diagnosis and treatment. Families play a central role throughout the illness journey, yet their perspectives are often overlooked in the development of digital patient navigation systems. This study explored family experiences, caregiving challenges, and expectations for a family-centered digital navigation model, DIVA.ID, by integrating Digital Health frameworks and Family Systems Theory. Methods: A qualitative descri
