Validity of self-assessment outcome questionnaires: patient-physician discrepancy in outcome interpretation.

Patient outcome following total hip arthroplasty (THA) was evaluated using a previously described patient assessment outcome index questionnaires. The questionnaire was distributed to 263 patients who underwent cementless THA. One hundred and three patients responded to the self-administered questionnaire and had updated clinical evaluation. We obtained a modified Harris Hip Score (HHS) based on patient assessments of their own pain and function and compared it with the clinical HHS obtained at the patients' last office visit. The mean follow up period was 4 years. Statistical analysis was per

Assessment of patient-reported outcome measures in pleural interventions.

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of data evaluating the clinical effect on symptoms of pleural intervention procedures. This has led to the development of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to define what constitutes patient benefit. The primary aim of this paper was to prospectively assess the effect of pleural procedures on PROMs and investigate the relationship between symptom change and clinical factors. METHODS: We prospectively collected data as part of routine clinical care from 158 patients with pleural effusion requiring interventions. Specific questionnaires included two patient

Patient-important outcome for the assessment of fracture repair.

Current evidence indicates that fracture healing assessment is limited to the use of one or two domains (such as pain, range of motion or mobility) in any single study. Functional outcome measures, which include physician-rated or observer-based impairment ratings and patient self-reported or observer-based activity limitation measures, better position the effectiveness of a given intervention towards patient-important outcomes. Health status measures, for example, cover a wide-range of physical, emotional, and social health dimensions. In this paper, we will examine the utility of metrics to

Patient-reported assessment of outcome after surgery for bone metastases.

Regardless of prognosis, surgery is often considered in metastatic bone disease (MBD) as a palliative procedure to improve function and quality of life. Traditional focus on objective outcomes such as mortality is inappropriate in this group, and there is a drive to assess outcomes via patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). This is an overview of current understanding of MBD outcomes and how this should influence future decision-making and research. The objectives of this review were to identify difficulties in measuring PROMs in the MBD patient population and explore alternatives to patie

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROM) as A Preoperative Assessment Tool.

AIM OF REVIEW: Patient-reported outcomes (PRO) on functional, social, and behavioral factors might be important preoperative predictors of postoperative outcomes. We conducted a literature review to explore associations of preoperative depression, socioeconomic status, social support, functional status/frailty, cognitive status, self-management skills, health literacy, and nutritional status with surgical outcomes. METHODS: Two electronic data bases, including PubMed and Google Scholar, were searched linking either depression, socioeconomic status, social support, functional status/frailty, c

The Acute Cystitis Symptom Score for Patient-Reported Outcome Assessment.

OBJECTIVES: The Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS) was developed as a self-reporting questionnaire for clinical diagnosis of acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) and symptomatic changes in female patients. The aim of the present study was to assess the utility of the different domains of ACSS including the 'dynamics' domain after therapy. The applicability of these domains in assessing changes in symptoms, as a function of time, in this population was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During the validation process of the ACSS in Uzbek and Russian languages, a subgroup of patients (n = 63) r

Recommendations to address respondent burden associated with patient-reported outcome assessment.

Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are increasingly used in healthcare research to provide evidence of the benefits and risks of interventions from the patient perspective and to inform regulatory decisions and health policy. The use of PROs in clinical practice can facilitate symptom monitoring, tailor care to individual needs, aid clinical decision-making and inform value-based healthcare initiatives. Despite their benefits, there are concerns that the potential burden on respondents may reduce their willingness to complete PROs, with potential impact on the completeness and quality of the dat

Patient satisfaction after zygoma and mandible reduction surgery: an outcome assessment.

An ovoid and slender face is considered attractive in Oriental culture, and facial bony contouring is frequently performed in Asian countries to achieve this desired facial profile. Despite their popularity, critical analyses of patients' satisfaction after facial-bone contouring surgery is lacking in the current literature. Questionnaires were sent to 90 patients who had undergone zygoma and/or mandibular contouring by a single surgeon at the Craniofacial Center, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. The number of patients who had mandibular angle reduction and zygoma reduction were 78 and 36

Sino nasal assessment questionnaire, a patient focused, rhinosinusitis specific outcome measure.

It is becoming increasingly important for clinicians to be able to demonstrate the effectiveness of their interventions. We have developed a rhinosinusitis--specific outcome measure (SNAQ-11) that avoids the shortcomings of the existing tools. This paper compares its use with the widely used Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-20). We carried out a prospective study that involved forty patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery. Their SNAQ-11 and SNOT-20 scores were compared pre and post operatively. We also recorded individual symptom scores pre and post operatively in order to study the impact of

A Retrospective Study: Multimodal Analgesia Quality Measure Implementation and Patient Outcome Assessment.

Current research has demonstrated that nonopioid multimodal analgesia decreases perioperative opioid consumption, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and pain scores. However, no research has been conducted to examine the patient outcomes of Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) 477. This study evaluates those outcomes following implementation of MIPS 477. The medical records of 400 adult patients who underwent elective and urgent laparoscopic gynecological procedures at a facility in the Mid-Atlantic region were reviewed. Data collection included patient characteristics, analgesic

A Mobile Patient-Reported Outcome Measure App With Talking Touchscreen: Usability Assessment.

BACKGROUND: In the past years, a mobile health (mHealth) app called the Dutch Talking Touch Screen Questionnaire (DTTSQ) was developed in The Netherlands. The aim of development was to enable Dutch physical therapy patients to autonomously complete a health-related questionnaire regardless of their level of literacy and digital skills. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the usability (defined as the effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction) of the prototype of the DTTSQ for Dutch physical therapy patients with diverse levels of experience in using mobile technology. METHODS:

Multidisciplinary Routine Outcome Monitoring in Forensic Psychiatry: Concordance Between Clinician and Patient Assessment.

Patient involvement in routine outcome monitoring (ROM) is vital for collaborative treatment and understanding differences between patient and clinician perspectives. This study assessed the agreement between patient and clinician ratings using the Instrument for Forensic Treatment Evaluation (IFTE) and its self-report version (IFTE-S) in high-security forensic psychiatric centers in Flanders, Belgium. Results showed concordance in domains like protective behavior and resocialization skills, but patients rated their problematic behavior as less severe than clinicians did. Item-level analyses r

Assessing outcomes for dysphonic patients.

This study was designed to evaluate a disease-specific outcome measure for patients with selected voice disorders and to relate this instrument to a standardized quality of life measurement. In addition, the study attempts to document the degree of handicap for dysphonia patients globally, between different vocal pathologies, and in comparison to other chronic diseases. In this prospective, observational study, 260 adult patients evaluated for alterations of voice completed a general quality of life measure (the Medical Outcomes Trust Short Form 36-Item[SF-36]) and a voice-specific instrument

Assessment of current patient reported outcome measures for three core outcome domains for single-sided deafness device intervention trials.

BACKGROUND: Outcome reporting in clinical trials of auditory interventions for adults with Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) is inconsistent. The Core Rehabilitation Outcome Set for Single-Sided Deafness (CROSSSD) initiative has recommended three outcome domains as a minimum standard in the design of SSD intervention clinical trials. These are, Spatial orientation, Group conversations in noisy social situations, and Impact on social situations. The study objectives were to (i) understand exactly what the outcome domains mean to SSD experts, and (ii) identify and assess candidate PROMs in terms of ho

Assessing the assessment: a scoping review of the mode of patient-reported outcome assessment in solid cancer clinical trials.

PURPOSE: Transparent reporting of how patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are collected is essential to ensure reproducible and interpretable data. Different modes of assessment may affect data quality and feasibility, yet their use in cancer trials is poorly described. Electronic PRO (ePRO) assessment may improve data quality and enable active review, but it is unclear how often different modes of assessment like ePRO assessment are used and in which trials. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed for randomized controlled trials (published 2019-2023) that used cancer-specific PRO measures i
