Simulation learning provides medical and nursing personnel with the opportunity to develop and refine their skills without putting patients at risk. Faced with ensuring the competence of a large number of new staff members, the management team at one facility implemented a simulation training program. Surgical team members are able to participate in an ongoing program of simulated scenarios involving surgical drape fires and airway fires, cardiac arrest of patients in the supine position and prone position, respiratory depression in the postanesthesia care unit, and malignant hyperthermia. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) combines the administration of cytotoxic agents with high-voltage electric pulses that transiently permeabilize tumor cell membranes and enhance intracellular drug uptake. This minimally invasive, nonthermal technique is particularly suitable for tumors located near critical structures, where surgery, radiotherapy, or percutaneous thermal ablation may be limited. In the spine, ECT can provide pain relief, neural decompression, and local tumor control while preserving neural structures. However, its implementation remains challenging due to complex vertebral anatomy, l

INTRODUCTION: Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is an intervention in patients with extensive obstructive coronary artery disease diagnosed with invasive coronary angiography. Here we present and test a novel application of non-invasive computational assessment of coronary hemodynamics before and after bypass grafting.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We tested the computational CABG platform in n = 2 post-CABG patients. The computationally calculated fractional flow reserve showed high agreement with the angiography-based fractional flow reserve. Furthermore, we performed multiscale computatio

Computational hemodynamics is being developed as an alternative approach for assisting clinical diagnosis and treatment planning for liver diseases. The technology is non-invasive, but the computational time could be high when the full geometry of the blood vessels is taken into account. Existing approaches use either one-dimensional model of the artery or simplified three-dimensional tubular geometry in order to reduce the computational time, but the accuracy is sometime compromised, for example, when simulating blood flows in arteries with plaque. In this work, we study a highly parallel met

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based medical education is a widely recognised tool to improve patient safety culture and outcomes. Many preventable clinic errors are specific to the unit where they occur. We planned and conducted an interprofessional in situ simulation program aligned with unit-specific errors and report its design, implementation and evaluation.
APPROACH: This prospective, survey-based study was conducted at a paediatric tertiary care centre on a medical-surgical inpatient ward. Incident and accident reports were reviewed; the most frequent and/or severe events were identified. Eigh

PURPOSE: Despite recent advocacy for transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) health competencies in medical education, there is little guidance on how to represent diverse gender identities for clinical skills training. Published literature is one of few resources available to inform educators' decisions, so this study aims to summarize how medical education scholarship portrays TGNB identities in patient simulation.
METHOD: This scoping review used PRISMA guidelines with search strings encompassing diverse gender identities and patient simulation. This search was completed in July 2021, and all yea

Patient-specific and lesion-specific computational simulation of bifurcation stenting is an attractive approach to achieve individualized pre-procedural planning that could improve outcomes. The objectives of this work were to describe and validate a novel platform for fully computational patient-specific coronary bifurcation stenting. Our computational stent simulation platform was trained using n = 4 patient-specific bench bifurcation models (n = 17 simulations), and n = 5 clinical bifurcation cases (training group, n = 23 simulations). The platform was blindly tested in n = 5 clinical bifur

BACKGROUND: The incidence rate of pulmonary artery stenosis is increasing year by year and its numerical simulation has become a key project of biomedical engineering.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work is to study the changes of hemodynamic parameters in patient-specific pulmonary artery stenosis.
METHODS: A pulmonary artery stenosis model is established based on patient-specific computed tomography (CT) images. According to the actual anatomy of patient-specific pulmonary artery stenosis, the stenosis area is simulated using a porous medium to study its hemodynamic changes. The computatio

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare disorder that causes heterotopic bone formation leading to chest wall and spinal deformities. This case describes an 11-year-old female with FOP who presented in respiratory failure necessitating two emergent fiberoptic nasotracheal intubations. The patient had severe trismus, rotary flexion of the neck, and distortion of the airway. A three-dimensional printed model based off of a computed tomography reconstruction was created for an in situ simulation before the true procedure. The surgery and trach change were both uneventful. We propose

INTRODUCTION: Preoperative simulation technologies are increasingly utilized in plastic surgery to enhance surgical planning and patient communication. While their technical benefits have been established, the impact on patient-reported outcomes (PROs), in particular satisfaction and perceived accuracy, remain underexplored. This systematic review evaluated the effect of preoperative simulation on patient-reported satisfaction, decision-making, and perceived accuracy in breast and facial aesthetic plastic surgery.
METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases up to A

This research fills a knowledge gap in bone tissue engineering by examining the mechanical characteristics of scaffolds at bone-tissue interfaces utilizing a cutting-edge technique involving the creation of 3D scaffolds from Polycaprolactone (PCL). The work employs Finite element analysis to measure the scaffolds' maximum principal and Von Mises stresses and strains. CT scans of the Maxilla and Mandible were used to apply load conditions to 3D models of the upper central incisor. In the derived computational model, four different load situations considered were: the masticatory load (70-100 N

For the first time, we assess episodic simulation in a patient with visual memory deficit amnesia, following damage to visual association cortices. Compared to control participants, the patient with visual memory deficit amnesia shows severely restricted responses when asked to simulate different types of future episodic scenarios. Surprisingly, the patient's responses are more limited in cases where the scenarios require less reliance on visual information. We explain this counterintuitive finding through discussing how the severe retrograde amnesia in visual memory deficit amnesia limits the

INTRODUCTION: Current ethical practice allows for adult patients with decision-making capacity to refuse blood transfusion, even at the cost of high morbidity or mortality. However, for an adult patient who is of the Jehovah's Witness faith, an unwanted blood transfusion confers a psychospiritual cost to the patient and a financial cost to health care entities. The ethical boundaries are increasingly ambiguous with minors who are members of the Jehovah's Witness faith. This simulation experience intends to identify and address knowledge gaps in the care of minors in an emergent setting using a

In percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), stent malapposition is a common complication often leading to stent thrombosis (ST). More recently, it has also been associated with longitudinal stent deformation (LSD) normally occurring through contact of a post balloon catheter tip and the protruding malapposed stent struts. The aim of this study was to assess the longitudinal integrity of first and second generation drug eluting stents in a patient specific coronary artery segment and to compare the range of variation of applied loads with those reported elsewhere. We successfully validated com

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare, life-threatening event. Many clinicians are unprepared to manage an MH crisis in the perioperative setting because it requires the use of low-frequency, high-risk skills and procedures. Simulation is a recognized educational method for cumulative and integrative learning in a safe environment that resembles real-life clinical scenarios. The aim of this quality improvement project was to provide simulation-based learning to perioperative personnel to educate them in the early recognition, treatment, and management of MH. An interdisciplinary team developed
