Compassionate transfer refers to patient requests to transfer embryos into their bodies in a location or at a time when pregnancy is not expected to occur and reflects their personal preferences and values. It is ethical for physicians to honor or decline such requests if they do so in a nondiscriminatory and unbiased manner. This document replaces the document of the same name, last published in 2020 (Fertil Steril 2020; 113:62-5).

BACKGROUND: Patients who are critically ill and those requiring emergency care are transported within and between hospitals on a regular basis seeking diagnostic or therapeutic services not available at the bed side or within the referring institution. The emergency of specialty systems often determines the ultimate destination of patients rather than proximity of facility and this has heightened the need for patient transfer. To achieve a favorable outcome, it is necessary to ensure that any transfer is carried out safely and effectively with minimum disruption of the continuum of care.

Extracorporeal circulation techniques are being used increasingly in patients with acute cardiac or pulmonary failure. Some of these patients may subsequently require transportation, which has limited the use of these techniques in hospitals without on site transplantation facilities. Healthcare facilities are interconnected via patient transfers, facilitating pathogen spread. We systematically reviewed studies reconstructing patient-sharing networks. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and a preregistered protocol (CRD42024559127), we searched PubMed, Scopus and IEEE Xplore up to October 1, 2025. This is a study of interhospital patient transfers to a medium-sized county sponsored hospital. During the three-month period studied, there were 416 patients who met the study criteria. Transferring patients with indwelling urinary catheters from secondary to primary care can be problematic and the process requires careful planning. Both the patient and the healthcare professional taking over the plan of care need details on the reason for catheterisation and plans for ongoing care. Failure to plan transfers, including the provision of appropriate equipment for use at home, can lead to inappropriate care and, on occasion, results in referral back to hospital.
