Why do geriatric patients attend otolaryngology emergency rooms?

BACKGROUND: With an aging population, health care of the elderly population is becoming increasingly important; however, the principles of geriatric medicine and issues of concern specific to geriatric otolaryngologic patients have not been widely applied. OBJECTIVES: To qualitatively analyze otolaryngological (EN1) emergencies in a geriatric population in an ENT emergency department (ED). METHODS: In this retrospective study the medical records of patients > or = 65 years of age who attended our ENT-ED between 3 pm and 8 am and who were observed and/or treated by the on-call otorhinolaryngo

[Roommate in patients' rooms--a nuisance or useful resources?].

A random sample (n = 80) of depressive and CHD general hospital inpatients of both sexes assessed fellow patients via a questionnaire (Mink) based on a qualitative pilot study. The results document the central role of hospital roommates in determining inpatient experience. Except for depressive males, all patients, regardless of their sex and diagnosis, experienced the presence of roommates as desirable and helpful. The stress factor, on the other hand, received a much lower rating. The main expectation was emotional relief, although the individual accentuation differed considerably. Putting o

Stroke patients' experiences of sharing rooms with dementia patients in a nursing home.

BACKGROUND: The mixed units that place lucid and dementia patients in same rooms have been viewed to benefit the dementia patients. However, many studies report negative attitudes of lucid residents towards mixed units, and there is a scarcity of research which explores the experiences of lucid residents while sharing rooms with the dementia patients in extended care homes. Currently many special care nursing facilities have mixed units in Korea, suggesting a need to examine their effects especially on cognitively lucid patients. OBJECTIVE: To explore lived experiences of stroke patients who

User experience of innovative hospital rooms for older patients: the HospiSenior project.

The hospital environment plays a crucial role in patient recovery. Traditional hospital rooms are not fully adapted to the specific needs of older patients who face higher risks of falls, delirium, and functional decline, leading to decreased comfort, autonomy, and safety. The HospiSenior project was designed to address these issues by developing innovative, user-centered hospital rooms tailored to older patients. This study aimed to evaluate the user experience (UX) of the HospiSenior rooms among older patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals across five university hospitals in Fran

Single-bed rooms in a geriatric ward prevent delirium in older patients.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated treatment environment risk factors for delirium in geriatric patients. In March 2017, a geriatric department was moved from old hospital buildings with multiple-bed rooms (old wards) to a new hospital with single-bed rooms (new wards), with no changes regarding uptake area, staff and admission criteria. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of delirium among patients in single-bed rooms compared with multiple-bed rooms. METHODS: An observational prospective study included patients aged ≥ 75 years admitted between 15 September 2016 a

Bioaerosols generated from toilet flushing in rooms of patients with Clostridioides difficile infection.

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is the most frequently reported hospital-acquired infection in the United States. Bioaerosols generated during toilet flushing are a possible mechanism for the spread of this pathogen in clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: To measure the bioaerosol concentration from toilets of patients with CDI before and after flushing. DESIGN: In this pilot study, bioaerosols were collected 0.15 m, 0.5 m, and 1.0 m from the rims of the toilets in the bathrooms of hospitalized patients with CDI. Inhibitory, selective media were used to detect C. difficile and

An epidemiological study of martial arts injuries in patients presenting to US emergency rooms.

INTRODUCTION: With the advent of mixed martial arts (MMA) growing in popularity, there has been a described increase in its participation. The term MMA generally describes the hybridization of combat disciplines including but not limited to: karate, judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, taekwondo, boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. With increased participation in MMA and martial arts, differing physical demands are placed on participants. Due to the physical nature of combat sports, there are injuries associated with participation. The purpose of this study is to report the incidence and characteristics

Emergence and Transmission of Daptomycin and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci Between Patients and Hospital Rooms.

BACKGROUND: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Tracking the dissemination of VRE strains is crucial to understand the dynamics of emergence and spread of VRE in the hospital setting. METHODS: Whole genome sequencing (WGS) and phylogenetic analyses were performed to identify dominant VRE strains and potential transmission networks between 35 patients with VRE-positive rectal swabs and their rooms (main rooms and bathrooms) on the leukemia (LKM) and the hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) floors. Sequence types (STs

Impact of terminal cleaning in rooms previously occupied by patients with healthcare-associated infections.

Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are costly but preventable. A limited understanding of the effects of environmental cleaning on the riskiest HAI associated pathogens is a current challenge in HAI prevention. This project aimed to quantify the effects of terminal hospital cleaning practices on HAI pathogens via environmental sampling in three hospitals located throughout the United States. Surfaces were swabbed from 36 occupied patient rooms with a laboratory-confirmed, hospital- or community-acquired infection of at least one of the four pathogens of interest (i.e., Acinetobacter bauma

Taking the septic patient to the operating room.

The acutely septic patient is a multifaceted challenge for the anesthetist. Unlike most elective surgery patients, acutely septic patients have severe systemic disease before the physiologic insults of anesthesia and surgery. The decision to operate is usually informed by the urgent or emergent need to correct a severe surgical problem and weighed against the higher risks of morbidity and mortality from the procedure itself. The care of the septic patient in the intensive care unit can help guide operating room management. However, the acuity and time course of intraoperative events, including

Treating patients with smallpox in the operating room.

Recent events around the world have emphasized the need for health care facilities to prepare to deal with biological threats, including smallpox. At Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, administrators recognized the need for a policy on handling patients with smallpox in the OR and asked a group of students to create a template policy for care of patients with smallpox in need of surgery. This article provides a brief history of smallpox, concerns surrounding smallpox today, and smallpox characteristics with which perioperative personnel should be familiar, as well as a guideline

[The safety of patients and staff in the operating room].

The risk of postoperative infection is determined by a number of factors including the underlying health of the patient, the type of surgery and the environment in which the procedure take place. The predominant infective organisms are Staphylococci. Coagulase-negative staphylococci are regarded as emerging pathogens, especially in clean surgery. The operating team is the major source of the contaminated bacteria. Bacteria dispersed from the skin is of greater importance than bacteria from the respiratory tract, so masks are not always necessary in the theatre during an operation except by tho

[The critical care patient in the operating room].

ICU patients can undergo elective or emergency surgery. Optimising the patient and arranging for the necessary blood components is as important as the fully monitored transport to the OR. Monitoring usually includes radial artery and vena cava access routes, pulmonary artery catheters help to check on oxygen transport parameters and cardiac output. Echocardiography is a new feature to determine cardiac volumes and left ventricular function as well as possible regional ischaemia. Anaesthesia induction can be performed using thiopentone along with diazepam and opioids. In shocked patients ketami

To investigate the consumption of alcohol among emergency room patients, we included 395 patients above 18 years old entering the emergency room during a period of ten days. The patients completed a questionnaire about alcohol consumption, smoking habits and medication. In our investigation 56% of the men and 25% of the women had a daily consumption above the limits recommended by the Ministry of Health (three drinks daily for men and two for women), while 41% men and 14% women consumed at least five drinks daily or 35 per week. Trauma seen in male patients with high alcohol consumption was ch

Comparing the effect of artificial lighting vs. natural emulating lighting on patients in hospital rooms.

In hospital environments, the significance of lighting becomes especially evident when considered alongside other environmental factors that influence patient well-being. Enhancing daytime light levels is essential for supporting physiological and psychological health, particularly through promoting circadian alignment. Appropriate lighting design can improve patient outcomes, reduce stress, and enhance comfort in healthcare settings.

Antimicrobial Non-Susceptibility of Escherichia coli from Outpatients and Patients Visiting Emergency Rooms in Taiwan.

Longitudinal nationwide surveillance data on antimicrobial non-susceptibility and prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) as well as AmpC β-lactamases producers among Escherichia coli from different sources in the community settings are limited. Such data may impact treatment practice. The present study investigated E. coli from outpatients and patients visiting emergency rooms collected by the Taiwan Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (TSAR) program. A total of 3481 E. coli isolates were studied, including 2153 (61.9%) from urine and 1125 (32.3%) from blood samples. These i
