103 biopsies of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) were studied using peanut agglutinin (PNA), PNA antibody and the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique; 53 specimens of various skin tumors were examined as controls; 96% of the BCCs showed a band-like peritumorous reaction not seen in any other tumor except for the Pinkus' fibroepithelioma. CONTEXT: Certain individuals are sensitive enough to react to peanuts and peanut oil, sometimes with deadly effect. It is thus crucial to have an accurate testing methodology for the assessment of allergies and immune reactivities to peanuts and their components, such as agglutinins and oleosins. Currently, skin-prick testing is performed only with the water-soluble components of peanut proteins and can produce false negatives. Testing with all possible food antigens and with both immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies may offer a more accurate alternative.

A panel of lectins was used to study surface carbohydrate expression on myeloma cells with the aim of finding a possible agent for in vitro bone marrow purging. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in normal pregnancy and hydatidiform mole did not bind to the peanut agglutinin (PNA)-Sepharose column, whereas significant amount of hCG in choriocarcinoma adsorbed to the column. It has been suggested that the malignant cells of Hodgkin's disease (HD), Reed-Sternberg cells, and their mononuclear variants may be related to cells of the monocyte-histiocyte system. We have developed a novel method for quantitation of lectin binding sites in mucins derived from colon tissues. Binding of peanut agglutinin and wheat germ agglutinin was measured in extracts from normal and malignant human colon epithelium. PURPOSE: To investigate whether intravitreally injected peanut agglutinin (PNA) conjugated with a fluorochrome can specifically label retinal cones in vivo and to evaluate its clinical potential.
METHODS: Fluorescein- or rhodamine-conjugated PNA (0.005%-0.5%) was intravitreally injected into anesthetized mouse, guinea pig, or monkey and retinas were removed at various intervals for fluorescence microscopy.
