Beer spoilage causes huge economic losses for the brewing industry. Only a few obligate anaerobic bacteria are capable of growing in beer. They can spoil the batches after brewing and during maturation, thereby causing especially serious damage. Pectinatus frisingensis is one of the most dreaded species of anaerobic beer spoilers. It causes turbidity and acidity as well as off flavors. While the growth-limiting stressors of beer have been well studied, the underlying mechanisms of adaptation are still largely unknown. A transcriptional study was conducted on P. frisingensis TMW 2.2471 by expos

Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive brain tumor in adults. However, due to the limitations of conventional treatments, as well as their side effects, there is a need to develop more effective and less harmful therapy strategies. There is evidence that plants endemic to northern Mexico possess biological activities that positively impact human health, particularly against cancer. Echinocereus engelmannii and Echinocereus pectinatus are cacti from the north of Mexico that produce bioactive compounds with antitumor activity. We obtained methanol extracts from previously isolated and fe

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Freshwater microalgae-bacteria consortia are increasingly utilized in wastewater treatment and biomass production. However, bacteria associated with the algal phycosphere may act as environmental reservoirs of multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotypes and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), including resistance to last-resort antibiotics such as colistin.
METHODS: An axenic culture of the freshwater microalga Pectinodesmus pectinatus was established using a NaClO-based cleaning protocol. Three phycosphere-associated bacterial strains (Chryseobacterium sp., Pseudomonas montei

Submerged aquatic macrophyte species Potamogeton crispus L. (curlyleaf pondweed) and Ruppia maritima L. (widegeongrass) were examined for selenium accumulation from agricultural drainage water in the field and under laboratory conditions. High concentrations of chloride and sulfate salts were found in the drainage water of the constructed wetland at Tulare Lake Drainage District, Corcorn, California. Samples of P. crispus and R. maritima collected from the field, had similar plant-tissue Se concentrations, but the rhizomes accumulated significantly greater amounts of Se than the shoot tissues.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to investigate the antiproliferative, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme activity capacities and phytochemical compositions of Thymus pectinatus (TP), Thymus convolutus (TC), which are endemic to Türkiye. Quantitative analysis of phenolic compounds in the extracts was conducted using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, targeting 53 phenolic compounds.
RESULTS: Rosmarinic acid, quinic acid, and cynaroside were identified as the major compounds, exhibiting quantitative variation in both extracts. The extracts had a high total phenolic c

The antimicrobial activities of aqueous and organic solvents (chloroform, ethanol and methanol) extracts of four plants Ceratophyllum demersum L., Eichhornia crassipes, Potamogeton crispus and Potamogeton pectinatus were tested in vitro against seventeen different microorganisms including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Nine of these identified organisms were obtained from different sources, Bacillus subtilis 1020, Bacillus cereus 1080, Staphylococcus aureus, Erwinia carotovora NCPPB 312, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum and Penici

The International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes has formally endorsed the conclusions of the Judicial Commission on three pending Requests for an Opinion, thereby allowing the corresponding Opinions to be issued. According to Opinion 97, the request for the conservation of the name Streptomyces scabies is denied, allowing the continued use of the correction Streptomyces scabiei. Opinions 98 and 99 conclude that in the absence of associated authentic type material, the names Bacillus aeolius and Pectinatus portalensis, respectively, are not validly published.

We report here the identification, characterization and culture of a Gram-negative to Gram-variable, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming anaerobic bacterium (strain FM1025(T)) isolated from the caecum of a duck. Phylogenetic analysis based on comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that this strain clustered with species of the family 'Acidaminococcaceae', with 94.9 % similarity to Megamonas hypermegale DSM 1672(T) and less than 91 % similarity with type strains of Pectinatus species. Sequence similarities of at least 98-99 % were observed with numerous sequences deposited in GenBank of uncultur

The genus Chaetostomella Hendel, 1927 (Diptera: Tephritidae) in the fauna of Morocco is reviewed based on integrative morphological and molecular analyses. Phylogenetic reconstruction using a 657 COI barcoding sequences strongly supports the monophyly of the genus and resolves Chaetostomella steropea as the basalmost lineage, sister to the recently radiated Chaetostomella cylindrica species complex. Two species, Chaetostomella kitaneasp. nov. (reared from Cynara scolymus and Carthamus pectinatus), and Chaetostomellamaroccanasp. nov. (reared from Mantisalca salmantica and Ptilostemon rhiphaeus)

Concentrations of heavy metals (especially arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury and lead) were measured in the contour (body) feathers of mute swans (Cygnus olor) and in its nutrients (fragile stonewort [Chara globularis], clasping leaf pondweed [Potamogeton perfoliatus], Eurasian watermilfoil [Myriophyllum spicatum], fennel pondweed [Potamogeton pectinatus]) to investigate the accumulation of metals during the food chain. The samples (17 feathers, 8 plants) were collected at Keszthely Bay of Lake Balaton, Hungary. Dry ashing procedure was used for preparing of sample and the heavy meta
