The methanolic extract of the waste seeds of Sesamum indicum L. (Pedaliaceae) was subjected to chromatographic fractionation; it led to the isolation of an alkyl benzene identified as 1,3-bis (pentadecyl)benzene (1) along with three known fatty acids: oleic acid (2), linoleic acid (3), and palmitic acid (4); one monosaturated cardanol, 3-pentadecylphenol (5) and two phytosteroids identified as sitostanol (6) and campestanol (7). The structures of these compounds were elucidated by chemical and spectroscopic analyses. Compounds 1, 5 and 6 were evaluated against protozoan parasites. Compound 1 m

BACKGROUND: A variety of medicinal products prepared from secondary tubers of Harpagophytum procumbens subsp. procumbens (Burch.) DC.ex Meisn. (Devil's Claw) and H. zeyheri are marketed in Africa, Europe, the United States, South America and elsewhere, where they are used for inflammatory and musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis, lower back pain, rheumatism and neuralgia, etc. While clinical studies conducted over the last twenty years support the general safety of such products, infrequent gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain), headache, vertigo an

The leaves of Dicerocaryum senecioides are used in South Africa as a traditional remedy for many ailments, including inflammatory disorders. The purpose of this study was therefore to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of a dichloromethane extract of D. senecioides leaves. Methanol extracts of the leaves were sub-fractionated with dichloromethane and the anti-inflammatory potential of this fraction investigated according to its effects on the mitogen-induced proliferative responses and cytokine profiles of isolated human blood mononuclear leucocytes (MNL). The cells were pre-treated with

Sesamol (SML) obtained from sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum, Linn, Pedaliaceae) has been used as a traditional health food in India and other countries since a long time. Besides its good antioxidant activity, SML is currently receiving considerable attention in relation to neurological disorders. Therefore, the present study has been designed to explore the protective role of SML in 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP)-induced neurotoxicity in animals. Male rats were given 3-NP (10 mg/kg) treatment for 14 days. Various behavioral observations (body weight, locomotor activity), oxidative damage (lipid p

Harpagophytum procumbens subsp. procumbens (Burch.) DC. ex Meisn. (Sesame seed Family-Pedaliaceae) is a popular medicinal plant known as Devil's claw. It is predominantly distributed widely over southern Africa. Its impressive reputation is embedded in its traditional uses as an indigenous herbal plant for the treatment of menstrual problems, bitter tonic, inflammation febrifuge, syphilis or even loss of appetite. A number of bioactive compounds such as terpenoids, iridoid glycosides, glycosides, and acetylated phenolic compounds have been isolated. Harpagoside and harpagide, iridoid glycoside

AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was conducted to document the ethnoveterinary practices (EVPs) used for the treatment and/or management of reproductive disorders of cattle and buffaloes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The information was collected using rapid and participatory rural appraisal techniques through interviews and focused group discussions with 217 traditional veterinary healers (TVHs) over a period of 16 months.
RESULTS: The use of 66 plant species was documented for the treatment of reproductive disorders in the two dairy species. Most frequently reported (>or=20 times) plants represented

BACKGROUND: Many plant-derived compounds have been used as pharmaceutical excipients due to their various functional properties. One such plant product is mucilage, which has created great interest among researchers to be explored for numerous biological applications.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present study was to isolate mucilage from the leaves of Pedalium murex Linn. (family; Pedaliaceae). The obtained mucilage was characterized physiochemically and evaluated for its antioxidant and anticancer properties.
METHODS: The obtained mucilage was screened for its phytochemicals and charac

OBJECTIVES: Lead exposure seriously impairs male reproductive function. The protective capacity of Pedalium murex leafy stem and fruit aqueous extracts against lead testicular toxicity is evaluated to find herbals drugs able to improve semen quality.
METHODS: Phytochemical screening were performed according to classical methods. Twenty four male rats were divided into four groups of six rats each and received the following treatments via oral route: distilled water; 0.2% lead acetate in drinking water; 0.2% lead acetate in drinking water with 400 mg/kg P. murex aqueous leafy stem extract; 0.2

Genetically diabetic (type II) KK-Ay mice, male and 5 weeks of age, were divided into one group of 12 mice that were fed on a basal (BAS) diet and three groups of 6 mice each that were fed on the test diets for 4 weeks. Each test diet contained 4.0% of the hot-water extract (HES) from defatted sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seed, 1.4% of the water eluent fraction (WFH) of HES or 0.7% of the methanol eluent fraction (MFH) of HES from a glass column packed with HP-20 resin. At the end of the feeding period, the BAS group was divided into the MAL and MALH groups which were respectively force-fed wit

OBJECTIVES: Recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have studied the potential effect of the topical use of sesame oil (SO), obtained from the sesame plant seeds (Sesamum indicum L., Pedaliaceae family), in preventing or alleviating the symptoms of infusion-related phlebitis (IRP); nevertheless, their data are inconsistent. Thus, this review sought to qualitatively and quantitatively synthesize data from all available RCTs concerning the effect of the topical administration of SO on managing IRP.
METHODS: The online databases were searched up to July 13, 2024. Studies were eligible if they

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sesame (Sesamum indicum, L., Family: Pedaliaceae) is a notable folk medicine in Middle East, Asia and Africa. Many traditional and pharmacological studies have documented the unique nature of sesame oil (SO). SO has been reported to have many pharmacological effects related to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity of its components. Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress have been the predominant pathogenic events in Alzheimer's disease (AD) which is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases.
AIM OF STUDY: we aimed to explore the neuroprotectiv

Iridoids, which have beneficial health properties, include a wide group of cyclopentane [c] pyran monoterpenoids present in plants and insects. The cleavage of the cyclopentane ring leads to secoiridoids. Mainly, secoiridoids have shown a variety of pharmacological effects including anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, neuroprotective, anti-cancer, and anti-obesity, which increase the interest of studying these types of bioactive compounds in depth. Secoiridoids are thoroughly distributed in several families of plants such as Oleaceae, Valerianaceae, Gentianaceae a
