Pedestrians in real world collisions.

The University of Western Ontario Accident Research Team investigated motor vehicle collisions resulting in a personal injury (PI) or fatality (F). Injury and collision data were analyzed for 198 injury-producing passenger car or light truck/van collisions with pedestrians (96 F; 102 PI). The majority of the fatal collisions occurred on roadways, often when pedestrians were crossing or walking along the travel lanes. In contrast, the majority of the personal injury cases occurred at intersections. Elderly pedestrians were found to be over-represented in the fatal cases in comparison with the p

[Fatal traffic accidents in pedestrians].

The author analyzed a group of 156 pedestrians (70 men and 86 women) above 50 years (Me = 72 years in men and 72.5 years in women) who died in 1967-1972 as a result of traffic accidents in the catchment area of the University Hospital in Prague 10. Head injuries were recorded in 73%, injuries of the chest in 62%, of the abdomen in 30%, of the spine in 26%, of the pelvis in 52%, of the upper extremities in 26% and of the lower extremities in 51% of the injured. In 20 (12.8%) a single injury was involved, in 136 (97.2%) multiple injuries, most frequently injuries of three parts of the body were

[Pedestrian accidents].

The epidemiology of non-traffic-related, pedestrian injuries in the winter sports resort of Arosa (Switzerland) between 1968 and 1995 (beginning december to end april) was studied. A total of 2813 patients (1140 male and 1673 female patients) with 3010 injuries was surveyed in a general practice. The study showed in the examined period not only an increasing number of injuries and a culmination in February, but also a higher risk for females (60 versus 40 per cent) and an increasing incidence with age. 6% of all patients had more than one injury and 5% required hospitalization. Most pedestrian

Trams--a risk factor for pedestrians.

In Gothenburg tram injuries were identified to be an important cause of traffic injuries and fatalities (48%) among pedestrians. During the summer middle-aged men, often under the influence of alcohol, were often severely injured and the injury rate was also high during the autumn. A majority (60%) of those fatally injured were under the influence of alcohol. Most injury events happened at or near a tram stop. The most serious injuries arose when the victim landed under a tram. In 1992, a runaway tram caused a major disaster, killing 10 pedestrians and injuring 30. The injury reducing measures

An investigation of driver, pedestrian, and environmental characteristics and resulting pedestrian injury.

Objective: Walking is integral to transportation and physical activity, but safety is a primary concern for pedestrians due to the increasing number of injuries and deaths per year. To address the need for avenues of pedestrian safety improvements, this study's objective is to determine the association among driver and pedestrian characteristics and behavior, environmental characteristics, and the presence of injury resulting from a pedestrian-vehicle crash. Methods: Pedestrian crashes were examined in Ohio from 2013 to 2017 using state crash records. Descriptive statistics as well as univaria

Crosswalk markings and the risk of pedestrian-motor vehicle collisions in older pedestrians.

CONTEXT: Motor vehicles struck and killed 4739 pedestrians in the United States in the year 2000. Older pedestrians are at especially high risk. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether crosswalk markings at urban intersections influence the risk of injury to older pedestrians. DESIGN: Case-control study in which the units of study were crossing locations. SETTING: Six cities in Washington and California, with case accrual from February 1995 through January 1999. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 282 case sites were street-crossing locations at an intersection where a pedestrian aged 65 years or older had b

Pontomedullary lacerations in pedestrians: an autopsy study.

It is common that injuries to the head are among the most frequent injuries found in pedestrian accidents, and can constitute a serious, if not fatal, threat. Brainstem lesions have only occasionally been reported in pedestrian injuries. The aim of this study has been to determine the frequency of brainstem pontomedullary lacerations (PMLs) among fatally injured pedestrians, the frequency of concomitant cranial, facial and cervical spine injuries in such cases, as well as to establish their possible underlying mechanism. In this work, PML was present in a significant number of fatally injured

The severity of pedestrian injuries in children: an analysis of the Pedestrian Injury Causation Study.

We reanalyzed data from the Pedestrian Injury Causation Study (PICS) for 1035 urban pedestrian injuries to children and youth less than 20 years of age. Analysis of variance with the Injury Severity Score (ISS) as the dependent variable was used to evaluate variables describing the characteristics of the pedestrian, the vehicle, the driver, and the circumstances under which the collision occurred. The mean injury severity score was 5.6. Nearly 80% of pedestrians had a minor injury, 13% moderate, and 7% severe; 4.5% of these pedestrian were killed. Multivariate analysis revealed that vehicle tr

Pedestrian tibial injuries.

From August 1980 through May 1984, 102 adult pedestrian patients with 130 tibial fractures were admitted to the Shock Trauma Center of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. We reviewed their records for admission status, procedures performed, and results: 32 patients who died, underwent primary amputation, or were lost to followup were excluded, leaving 70 patients with 86 tibial fractures as the base study group. We grouped the data by year of admission and analyzed it in terms of the effects of changes in the treatment protocol on results, specifically the time to un

Safety education of pedestrians for injury prevention.

BACKGROUND: Each year about one million people die and about 10 million are seriously injured on the world's roads. Educational measures to teach pedestrians how to cope with the traffic environment are considered to be an essential component of any prevention strategy, and pedestrian education has been recommended in many countries. However, as resources available for road safety are limited, a key question concerns the relative effectiveness of different prevention strategies. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the effectiveness of pedestrian safety education programmes in preventing pedestrian-motor

Police perception of intoxication among injured pedestrians.

To assess police officers' accuracy in perceiving alcohol or drug intoxication of injured pedestrians, blood test results from pedestrians struck by vehicles and admitted to a Level I trauma center for a 3-year period were linked to police reports of the crashes. Police officers were 64.5% sensitive and 99.3% specific in identifying alcohol use in injured pedestrians when blood tests were positive for alcohol, and 2.2% sensitive and 100% specific in identifying other drug use when blood tests were positive for drugs other than alcohol. Those with higher blood ethanol levels were more often cor

The transportation safety of elderly pedestrians: Modeling contributing factors to elderly pedestrian collisions.

For the elderly, walking is an important, reliable mobility option, since the elderly frequently lose their physical and/or sensory ability to drive as their age increases. However, elderly pedestrians are vulnerable on the streets and are at great risk of injury or death, when involved in a collision. This is due to not only increased frailty but also such issues as reaction speed and confidence on the streets. Therefore, pedestrian safety for older adults is a growing concern. This paper comprehensively examines the relationship between physical conditions and elderly pedestrian safety at th

Pedestrians: the daily underestimated victims on the road.

Traffic-related pedestrian injuries (TRPI) are vulnerable to road users. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the demographic pattern of injury and outcome of TRPI. Patients with TRPI admitted between November 2007 and March 2010 to the only level 1 trauma centre in Qatar were included. A retrospective analysis was based on medical records and Emergency Medical Services run sheets. The spreadsheet included demographic data and pre-hospital transport, service admissions and injuries by system and mortality. Of 4077 patients who were admitted, 420 (10.3%) had TRPI. The mode of transportation incl

The epidemiology of thoracic aortic injuries in pedestrians.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta is recognized as a common cause of occupant death after rapid deceleration in motor vehicle collisions. The incidence of thoracic aorta rupture in pedestrian victims of vehicular collisions, however, is unknown. This study focuses on the epidemiology of injury to the thoracic aorta in pedestrian vehicular collisions. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all pedestrian fatalities and survivors of rupture of the thoracic aorta during a 6-year period at a regional Level I trauma center and medical examiner's office. RESULTS: There

Effectiveness of Wearable Protection Equipment for Seated Pedestrians.

This study used finite element models to investigate the efficacy of seated pedestrian protection equipment in vehicle impacts. The selected safety equipment, a lap belt, an airbag vest, and a bicycle helmet, were chosen to mitigate the underlying biomechanical causes of seated pedestrian injuries reported in the literature. The impact conditions were based on the three most dangerous impact scenarios from a previous seated pedestrian impact study. Serious injury (AIS 3+) risks were compared with and without protective equipment. A 50th percentile male occupant model and two generic vehicle mo

Injury patterns among pedestrians using assistive mobility devices.

INTRODUCTION: As the population ages, growing numbers of individuals are turning to assisted mobility devices (AMDs) to maintain independence. These devices often place users in a seated position. Like ambulatory pedestrians, pedestrians seated in an AMD are at risk for involvement in an automobile versus pedestrian crash. The purpose of this study is to compare the injury pattern and comorbidities of standing pedestrians struck by an automobile versus those of seated pedestrians. METHODS: The Arizona State Trauma Registry was queried for pedestrians struck by an automobile between 2010 and 2

Pedestrians in Traffic Environments: Ultrafine Particle Respiratory Doses.

Particulate matter has recently received more attention than other pollutants. PM10 and PM2.5 have been primarily monitored, whereas scientists are focusing their studies on finer granulometric sizes due both to their high number concentration and their high penetration efficiency into the respiratory system. The purpose of this study is to investigate the population exposure to UltraFine Particles (UFP, submicrons in general) in outdoor environments. The particle number doses deposited into the respiratory system have been compared between healthy individuals and persons affected by Chronic O

Resource utilization by injured automobile occupants and pedestrians.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the hospital resources utilized in treating pedestrian trauma would be significantly greater than that for automobile occupants. This was based on previous studies that showed that the demographic features and patterns of injury sustained by the pedestrian population were significantly different from that of automobile occupants. METHODS: A hospital-based study was designed utilizing retrospective analysis of a prospective trauma database. All primary retrievals of pedestrians (n=547) and automobile occupants (n=597) involved in
