Bacteremic infection with Pediococcus: vancomycin-resistant opportunist.

Pediococci are recently recognized Gram-positive human pathogens, resistant to vancomycin and generally susceptible to penicillin. Infection in adults has been seen in patients with chronic underlying conditions as well as those with previous abdominal surgery. Two previous infants with congenital gastrointestinal malformations requiring surgical correction have been reported with sepsis attributable to Pediococcus sp. We report a third infant born with gastroschisis who developed Pediococcus bacteremia and meningitis 3 months after surgery, and speculate regarding the role of probiotics in th

Polysaccharide production by Pediococcus pentosaceus from wine.

Two polymer-forming strains of Pediococcus pentosaceus from Argentinian wines were grown under different conditions. Polysaccharides were produced independently of carbon source at the early logarithmic phase of growth. With the presence of ethanol and SO2, the specific polymers production was greater. The polysaccharides comprised of glucose, fructose and galactose, with predominant linkages of alpha-1,4- and alpha-1,6-glucosidic with a ratio 1:1. They contained approximately 5500 hexose molecules.

Lactobacillus acidophilus combined with Pediococcus acidilactici ameliorates colitis.

BACKGROUND: The increasing global incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) calls for urgent attention to the prevention and management of its symptoms. Public awareness and international regulations aimed at banning or reducing antibiotic use require alternative strategies, with probiotics demonstrating promising potential. Recent studies suggest that the combination of different probiotic strains with complementary functions may achieve synergistic effects. METHODS: We selected Lactobacillus acidophilus, noted for its mucosal adhesion, and Pediococcus acidilactici, distinguished for its environm

Vancomycin-resistant Pediococcus acidilactici: nine cases of bacteremia.

Pediococci, vancomycin-resistant gram-positive cocci, have been isolated from human specimens, but an association with clinical illness has not been established. Clinical and epidemiologic data were obtained on nine patients who had Pediococcus acidilactici isolated from blood. Patients were eight elderly adults with complicated medical problems and one infant with congenital jejunoileal atresia. Seven patients were hospitalized before P. acidilactici was isolated. Eight had received multiple antibiotics; however, only two had received vancomycin. In all cases there was a delay in correct bact

Agrowaste to vanillin conversion by a natural Pediococcus acidilactici strain BD16.

Owing to its flavoring, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic nature, vanillin is widely used in foods, beverages, perfumes and pharmaceutical products. Ferulic acid (FA) is an important precursor of vanillin which is abundant in cereals like maize, rice and wheat and sugar beet. A major drawback of microbial vanillin production from FA is the degradation and biotransformation of toxic vanillin to other phenolic derivatives. The present study is undertaken to explore microbial vanillin production from FA precursor rice bran by employing vanillin-resistant Pediococcus acidilactici BD1

Bartonella quintana and Bartonella pediococcus Infection after Aortic Valve Replacement.

Bartonella quintana and Bartonella pediococcus infections are very rare causes of endocarditis. Urban trench fever with relapsing febrile illness, headache, leg pain, and endocarditis has now begun to be a more important cause of disease in socially disadvantaged persons. The diagnosis is difficult because the growth of B. quintana in blood culture takes 20-40 days. B. pediococcus may be an opportunistic pathogen in severely compromised hosts, although it has been described as a harmless bacterium. We describe a patient who developed bioprosthetic valve infection with B. quintana and B. pedioc

Probiotic Pediococcus pentosaceus strain GS4 alleviates azoxymethane-induced toxicity in mice.

Probiotic treatment has been gaining attention due to its remarkable effects in alleviating toxicity and carcinogenesis. The novel strain Pediococcus pentosaceus GS4 has been reported for probiotic, survivability in simulated gastrointestinal fluid, and antioxidative and biohydrogenation properties. Therefore, we hypothesize that this specific strain might be able to assuage the effect of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced toxicity in mice. Twenty-eight Swiss albino mice were divided into 4 groups and were studied for 32 weeks. Azoxymethane (10 mg/kg body weight) was administered intraperitoneally twi

Exploring Pediococcus sp. M21F004 for Biocontrol of Bacterial and Fungal Phytopathogens.

This study explores the biocontrol potential of Pediococcus sp. M21F004, a lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from marine environments, against several bacterial and fungal phytopathogens. Out of 50 marine bacterial isolates, Pediococcus sp. M21F004 was selected for its exceptional antimicrobial activity. The strain, isolated from the intestine of a starry flounder, was identified as Pediococcus sp. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that oleic acid (OA) is a key antimicrobial compound produced by Pediococcus sp. M21F004. In vitro assays showed that the culture bro

Research on the Effect of Pediococcus pentosaceus on Salmonella enteritidis-Infected Chicken.

Salmonella enteritidis can cause significant morbidity and mortality in humans and economic loss in the animal industry. Improving the innate immunity is an effective method to prevent S. enteritidis infection. Pediococcus pentosaceus is a Gram-positive coccus which had probiotics properties. Numerous previously published studies reported that probiotics were beneficial to gut microbiota by changing the intestinal flora structure and inhibiting the harmful microbial growth to enhance the innate immunity. We investigated the immunological effects of P. pentosaceus on Salmonella-infected chicken

Septic Shock Secondary to a Urinary Tract Infection with Pediococcus Pentosaceus.

We present a case of a urinary tract infection secondary to Pediococcus pentosaceus causing septic shock and acute kidney injury in a 70-year-old male. We demonstrate successful treatment with a 10-day course of piperacillin/tazobactam. Recently, Pediococci have been found to be the cause of opportunistic infections in humans. This has posed a challenge to treating infections caused by this species because it has been found to be resistant to multiple antibiotics, including glycopeptides.

Proinflammatory effect of Pediococcus pentosaceus, a bacterium used as hay preservative.

Bacterial cultures, such as Pediococcus pentosaceus, are used to treat hay with the objective of preventing hay heating and moulding, and thus, the development of the microbial growth which causes farmer's lung. The aim of this study was to investigate whether such bacterial cultures have the potential to induce a pulmonary inflammatory response. Mice were instilled 3 days week-1 for 3 weeks with either saline or nonviable preparations of P. pentosaceus, Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula, Lactococcus lactis (control bacteria) or with the combinations of S. rectivirgula and P. pentosaceus. Phosphate-solubilizing function of Pediococcus pentosaceus PSM16 and its underlying mechanism.

Phosphorus is a crucial nutrient for plant growth, but only a limited quantity is typically accessible in the soil for plants to absorb directly. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can convert inorganic phosphorus compounds into forms that are more readily usable for plant nutrition. Our previous research has verified the function of Pediococcus pentosaceus PSM16 in degrading phytic acid. On this basis, we further explored the phosphorus-solubilizing capacity of PSM16 and evaluated its potential for practical application in this study. The results indicated that PSM16 significantly enhanced

Host-derived Pediococcus Acidilactici GLP06 Mitigates antibiotic-associated Diarrhoea in Dogs.

Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is an adverse reaction caused by antibiotic treatment, typically resulting from an imbalance in the gut microbiota. Probiotics have been widely used to counteract AAD by enhancing the composition of intestinal microbiota. Canine-derived Pediococcus acidilactic GLP06 has been shown to be a promising probiotic, however, the effect of P. acidilactici GLP06 on canine AAD is unknown. In this experiment, we investigated the effect of P. acidilactici GLP06 on antibiotic-induced diarrhea induced by intestinal flora imbalance in Beagle dogs by blood biochemical inde

Biomedical applications of L-alanine produced by Pediococcus acidilactici BD16 (alaD+).

L-alanine possesses extensive physiological functionality and tremendous pharmacological significance, therefore could be considered as potential ingredient for food, pharmaceutical, and personal care products. However, therapeutic properties of L-alanine still need to be addressed in detail to further strengthen its utilization as a viable ingredient for developing natural therapeutics with minimum side effects. Thus, the present study was aimed to explore the anticipated therapeutic potential of L-alanine, produced microbially using a lactic acid bacterial strain Pediococcus acidilactici BD1

Fournier's gangrene caused by Pediococcus damnosus - A case report and review of the literature.

The anaerobic bacterium Pediococcus damnosus is known to be associated with beer or wine spoilage in breweries, and human infection with Pediococcus damnosus has never been reported. A man with severe diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy consulted our clinic because of painful swelling of the scrotal skin and a fever. The patient was diagnosed with Fournier's gangrene, and Pediococcus damnosus was exclusively isolated from the exudate. Finally, one of the testes became necrotic and was excised. This is the first case of human infection by Pediococcus damnosus and primary skin infection d
