Polysaccharide production by Pediococcus pentosaceus from wine.

Two polymer-forming strains of Pediococcus pentosaceus from Argentinian wines were grown under different conditions. Polysaccharides were produced independently of carbon source at the early logarithmic phase of growth. With the presence of ethanol and SO2, the specific polymers production was greater. The polysaccharides comprised of glucose, fructose and galactose, with predominant linkages of alpha-1,4- and alpha-1,6-glucosidic with a ratio 1:1. They contained approximately 5500 hexose molecules.

Probiotic Pediococcus pentosaceus strain GS4 alleviates azoxymethane-induced toxicity in mice.

Probiotic treatment has been gaining attention due to its remarkable effects in alleviating toxicity and carcinogenesis. The novel strain Pediococcus pentosaceus GS4 has been reported for probiotic, survivability in simulated gastrointestinal fluid, and antioxidative and biohydrogenation properties. Therefore, we hypothesize that this specific strain might be able to assuage the effect of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced toxicity in mice. Twenty-eight Swiss albino mice were divided into 4 groups and were studied for 32 weeks. Azoxymethane (10 mg/kg body weight) was administered intraperitoneally twi

Research on the Effect of Pediococcus pentosaceus on Salmonella enteritidis-Infected Chicken.

Salmonella enteritidis can cause significant morbidity and mortality in humans and economic loss in the animal industry. Improving the innate immunity is an effective method to prevent S. enteritidis infection. Pediococcus pentosaceus is a Gram-positive coccus which had probiotics properties. Numerous previously published studies reported that probiotics were beneficial to gut microbiota by changing the intestinal flora structure and inhibiting the harmful microbial growth to enhance the innate immunity. We investigated the immunological effects of P. pentosaceus on Salmonella-infected chicken

Septic Shock Secondary to a Urinary Tract Infection with Pediococcus Pentosaceus.

We present a case of a urinary tract infection secondary to Pediococcus pentosaceus causing septic shock and acute kidney injury in a 70-year-old male. We demonstrate successful treatment with a 10-day course of piperacillin/tazobactam. Recently, Pediococci have been found to be the cause of opportunistic infections in humans. This has posed a challenge to treating infections caused by this species because it has been found to be resistant to multiple antibiotics, including glycopeptides.

Phosphate-solubilizing function of Pediococcus pentosaceus PSM16 and its underlying mechanism.

Phosphorus is a crucial nutrient for plant growth, but only a limited quantity is typically accessible in the soil for plants to absorb directly. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can convert inorganic phosphorus compounds into forms that are more readily usable for plant nutrition. Our previous research has verified the function of Pediococcus pentosaceus PSM16 in degrading phytic acid. On this basis, we further explored the phosphorus-solubilizing capacity of PSM16 and evaluated its potential for practical application in this study. The results indicated that PSM16 significantly enhanced

Protective Effect of Pediococcus pentosaceus Li05 on Constipation via TGR5/TPH1/5-HT Activation.

Pediococcus pentosaceus Li05, a strain of lactic acid bacteria isolated from the faeces of healthy volunteers, exhibited potential protective effects against various diseases. This study performed third-generation sequencing and detailed characterisation of its genome. The Li05 chromosome harboured conserved genes associated with acid resistance (atp), bile salt resistance (bsh), oxidative stress resistance (hsl, dltA, and et al.), and adhesion (nrd, gap, and et al.), whereas the plasmid did not contain antibiotic resistance or virulence genes. Following intervention with Li05 in loperamide-in

Effects of Nitric Oxide-Enhanced Pediococcus pentosaceus YT2 on Post-Mortem Beef Tenderization.

This study investigated the effects of NO-enhanced Pediococcus pentosaceus YT2 on the tenderness of post-mortem beef. Increasing the concentration of YT2 increased the myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI) and decreased the shear force of beef. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that YT2 caused changes in protein-water interactions. As the concentration of YT2 was increased, the content of β-sheet increased from 33.12 to 39.85%, of β-turn increased from 13.39 to 14.33%, and of α-helix decreased from 53.49 to 46.37%. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance showed that incorporating

Isolation and characterisation of Pulsatilla Radix-utilising bacteria Pediococcus pentosaceus PR-1 from human faeces.

Although probiotics have been isolated from different sources, few were isolated from traditional Chinese medicine. The current study firstly isolates Pulsatilla Radix-utilising Pediococcus pentosaceus PR-1 from human faeces. Subsequently, the tolerance of PR-1 to low pH, bile salts, simulated gastric juice and succus entericus, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, cholesterol assimilation and antibiotics susceptibility were investigated. After 2 h of incubation at pH 2.0, over 80% of PR-1 survived. The cell viability of PR-1 at 2 h under 0.1% bile salt condition was 99.2%. The surviv

Membrane-acting bacteriocin purified from a soil isolate Pediococcus pentosaceus LB44 shows broad host-range.

Bacteriocin LB44 was purified from cell-free supernatant (CFS) of Pediococcus pentosaceus LB44 using activity-guided chromatography techniques. It was stable up to 121 °C, pH 2.0-6.0, sensitive to proteinase K, papain and trypsin, and retained complete activity in the presence of organic solvents tested. The molecular weight of bacteriocin was ∼6 kDa and initial ten amino acid residues (GECGMCXECG) suggested a new compound. The loss in viable cell count and K+ ion efflux of target cells of Micrococcus luteus suggested bactericidal activity. The cell membrane of bacteriocin-treated cells was fo

Probiotic Pediococcus pentosaceus Li05 Improves Cholestasis through the FXR-SHP and FXR-FGF15 Pathways.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a rare chronic cholestatic liver disease, is characterized by intrahepatic or extrahepatic strictures accompanied by biliary fibrosis. So far, there are no effective therapies to slow down the progression of this disease. Farnesoid X receptors (FXRs) are ligand-activated transcription factors involved in the control of bile acid (BA) synthesis and enterohepatic circulation. Therefore, targeting FXRs holds promise as a potential approach for treating PSC. Pediococcus pentosaceus Li05 is a probiotic that was isolated from healthy volunteers and has previousl

Enhanced lactic acid production from P2O5-pretreated biomass by domesticated Pediococcus pentosaceus without detoxification.

Expensive cellulase and complex detoxification procedures increase the cost of biomass lactic acid fermentation. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a robust method to ferment lactic acid using biomass by avoiding cellulase and detoxification. This study demonstrates the advantage of combining mechanocatalytic P2O5 pre-treatment and strain domestication. We show that an enzyme-free mechanocatalytic saccharification process by combining mix-milling of P2O5 with biomass and successive hydrolysis produces a fermentable hydrolysate with much less inhibitory compounds than the hydroly
