Despite the wide availability of peer-led grief support groups, there has been limited study of their methodology or outcomes. This pilot study examined a nonclinical sample of 99 adults who self-referred to a peer-led group. This group involved a time-limited, manualized, closed group intervention (Restorative Retelling) that was co-facilitated by peer volunteers. The study documented a low dropout rate from this free service with preimprovement/postimprovement in scores of grief distress as measured by the Prolonged Grief Disorder (PG-13) scale. The peer volunteers were preselected and train

Mosbach & Leventhal (1988) examined the relation of cigarette smoking to peer-group identification in rural Wisconsin adolescents. They found that among dirts (problem-prone youth), regulars (average youth), hot-shots (good social or academic performers), and jocks (athletes), youth most likely to smoke were dirts and hot-shots. We performed a replication with a Southern California cohort and also for use of smokeless tobacco. We hypothesized that jocks would be the main users of smokeless tobacco. We identified the same groups and an additional one, skaters (skateboarders or surfers). As Mosb

OBJECTIVE: This study explored how adolescent peer groups perceive social inclusion of students with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABIs).
METHODS: Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a framework, an experimental design used vignettes and questionnaires to examine participants' attitudes, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, and behavioral intentions toward two fictional students with an ABI - one displaying internalizing behaviors and the other externalizing behaviors. A total of 263 participants aged 11-13 in a large secondary school in the UK participated.
RESULTS: Regressi

BACKGROUND: Group peer telementoring supports interprofessional learning through multi-directional and synchronous engagement where experienced and knowledgeable individuals exchange guidance and support with differently experienced and knowledgeable individuals. A leading example of group peer telementoring among medical specialists and medical generalists is Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (Project ECHO), a rapidly spreading program with demonstrated learning outcomes among community-based medical generalists. Yet the multi-directional exchanges that characterize group pe

The aim of this study was to examine, through the roles of peers with regards to diabetes, the relationship between the support perceived by adolescents with diabetes and their peer-group affiliation. This is a descriptive, phenomenological and retrospective study based on a qualitative methodology. In-depth interviews with 15 people aged 18-35 with type 1 diabetes mellitus diagnosed in their childhood or adolescence were carried out. Data was analyzed through the interpretation of general discourses. Peers have considerable influence on adolescents and provide them social support from differe

To investigate the social cognitive skills related to challenging gender stereotypes, children (N = 61, 3-6 years) evaluated a peer who challenged gender stereotypic norms held by the peer's group. Participants with false belief theory of mind (FB ToM) competence were more likely than participants who did not have FB ToM to expect a peer to challenge the group's stereotypes and propose that the group engage in a non-stereotypic activity. Further, participants with FB ToM rated challenging the peer group more positively. Participants without FB ToM did not differentiate between their own and th

BACKGROUND: Surgical peer review might be characterized by assessment heterogeneity.
METHODS: We performed a prospective, anonymous, peer review of surgeon and system performance during a morbidity and mortality conference.
RESULTS: Twenty-two cases were reviewed by a mean of 48.9 respondents each, including attendings, fellows, and residents. A mean of 50% (standard deviation, 23%) of respondents identified some quality issue in each case, reflecting high heterogeneity. The mean percentage in identifying a system issue was 27%, and in identifying a physician issue was 37%. When identifying

In this sociometric study, we aimed to investigate the social position of gender-referred children in a naturalistic environment. We used a peer nomination technique to examine their social position in the class and we specifically examined bullying and victimization of gender dysphoric children. A total of 28 children (14 boys and 14 girls), referred to a gender identity clinic, and their classmates (n = 495) were included (M age, 10.5 years). Results showed that the gender-referred children had a peer network of children of the opposite sex. Gender-referred boys had more nominations on peer

Children learn language from their social partners, and differences in the behavior of these social partners can influence language learning outcomes. The literature largely focuses on adult caregivers; however, there is less clarity regarding the extent to which the social behavior of peers might also impact children's language learning. Children spend a large proportion of their time with peers once they enter preschool; peers are thus an important source of input for learning. Moreover, preschoolers are not just interacting with individual peers but also with groups of peers. To explore the

BACKGROUND: Peer group deviance (PGD) is strongly associated with current and future externalizing behaviors. Debate remains about the degree to which this association arises from social selection. The first year of university constitutes a social experiment in which most individuals leave their home environment and recreate for themselves a new peer group.
METHODS: PGD was measured in newly arrived university students and then 6 and 18 months later. Other personality and family traits were also assessed.
RESULTS: PGD reported for high school friends at the start of university and university

There is very little documentation dealing with peer support groups for people with Asperger's syndrome, and especially about groups for adolescents. This article gives a description of three such groups that were run in parallel with support groups for parents. The great majority of the participants completed the course of the group. In a consumer satisfaction survey, the majority of the participants (76.5%) and nearly all of their parents (95%) rated satisfaction with the group meetings as good or very good. These responses indicate that adolescents with Asperger's syndrome and their parents

BACKGROUND: Stroke and other acquired brain injuries (ABIs) can present challenging experiences for individuals, both in recovery of functions affected by visible or invisible impairments and in learning to live with the new situation. Research has shown that sharing experiences face-to-face in peer groups can be beneficial during recovery. However, there is limited knowledge about the lived experiences of people with ABI who participate in online peer-to-peer groups.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to explore the lived experiences of participating in online peer-to-peer groups for people

Research has shown that substance use might serve beneficial, developmental functions for adolescents, in particular concerning young people's functioning in friendships and intimate relationships. Nonetheless, a major problem in these studies is that information on social functioning is based on adolescent's self-reports, which undoubtedly might lead to an overestimation of the social functions of substance use. In the present study, we collected data of 3361 early and mid-adolescents at secondary schools in the Netherlands. Information on individual student's social behavior and psychologica

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol consumption, particularly among young males, is an important global health problem, in part because of the increased risks of intentional and non-intentional injuries, uses of illicit drug, crime, and psychiatric disorders. There are no data available to evaluate the extent to which interventions are effective in reducing hazardous/harmful alcohol consumption among young males in Thailand. We examined the efficacy of alcohol harm reduction strategies administered as a peer-drinking group motivational intervention (PD-GMI) among Thai male undergraduates.
METHODS:

This study examined the role of self-esteem and peer group membership in risk behavior among 183 8th graders in a multiethnic school. The hypothesis was that domain-specific rather than global self-esteem would be associated with "crowd" membership that in turn would be related to risk behavior. Data were gathered through informant interviews and individual surveys. Domain-specific self-esteem was related to crowd affiliation as well as to alcohol and cigarette use; global self-esteem was not related. Crowd affiliation related to alcohol use and sexual behavior after controlling for the effect

Mass traumas, resulting from war and terrorist attacks, natural or human-made disasters, are rapidly escalating worldwide. Nevertheless, studies examining the implications of mass trauma on children are limited, particularly in terms of how it affects peer relations and friendships. This study focused on how the children's exposure to a massive terror attack and war influences their peer relations and friendships, and how these help them cope with the implications of the mass trauma. The uniqueness of the present study lies in its focus on the lived experiences and voices of children and youth
