Exploring the Microbial Flora Associated with Penaeidae Shrimp Habitats Along the Northeastern Mediterranean Coast of Egypt.

Shrimp is one of Egypt’s most widely consumed and economically valuable seafoods; however, it is vulnerable to various microorganisms. This study identifies the bacterial and yeast communities associated with wild and farmed Penaeidae shrimp from El-Deeba Triangle (Lake Manzala) along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. Seasonal samples (2022–2023) of shrimp and surrounding water were collected from three sites in triplicate and processed for microbial isolation using baiting and direct plating on multiple culture media. Isolates were identified based on macro- and microscopic morphology and further

Feeding ecology and trophic interactions of the narrow-barred Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) in the Central Taiwan Strait.

Understanding the foraging ecology of marine predators is essential for ecosystem-based fisheries management. This study examined the diet of the narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) in the Central Taiwan Strait using stomach content and stable isotope analyses integrated with an isotopic mixing model. A total of 1,733 specimens were collected between January 2017 and March 2022. Stomach content analysis revealed that 79.8% had empty stomachs, while the remainder mainly contained semi-digested fish remains. Among identifiable prey, composition varied by size and season. Sar

Insights into diet and niche separation in the context of prey availability between two sympatric whiprays in a tropical intertidal estuary.

Increasing evidence supports associations between various elasmobranch species and estuarine habitats, particularly during early life stages. However, with substantial knowledge gaps surrounding spatial habitat use and trophic ecology of estuary-associated species in Australia, we cannot reliably assess the functional importance of these areas or identify relevant drivers of resource partitioning in estuarine food webs. Here, we compared the diets and trophic niches of two sympatric dasyatid species, the Australian whipray Himantura australis and brown whipray Maculabatis toshi, in a tropical

Widespread detection of Wenzhou shrimp virus 8 (WzSV8) and it's implication in cultured shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) farms of India.

Like in other parts of world, Indian shrimp aquaculture industry is also suffering from diseases and mortalities and many of the pathogens have invaded into India. Here, an attempt was made to investigate the presence of newly described shrimp virus, Wenzhou shrimp virus 8 (WzSV8). More than 200 shrimp samples from different locations of India were collected and analysed for the presence of this virus. Widespread detection of WzSV8 was observed in shrimp farms of India where 58% of samples were found to be positive for this virus. Many of the samples had only WzSV8 infection and in others co-i

CYTOCHEMICAL FEATURES OF SHRIMP HEMOCYTES.

Morphological studies suggest that there are several types of decapod hemocytes; however, distinguishing criteria based on conventional staining techniques are often subtle or ambiguous. Cytochemical features of ridgeback prawn (Penaeidae: Sicyonia ingentis) hemocytes were studied using specific stains for lysosomes, cytoplasmic contents, and granule enzymes. This approach facilitates the differentiation of cell types in the ridgeback prawn and provides information on the functions of and relation ships among different cell types. Agranular hemocytes and a subgroup of small granule hemocytes c

Characterization of Pathogenic Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae From Whiteleg Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei): An Emerging Cause of Mass Mortality in the Republic of Korea.

Mass mortality events characterized by muscle whitening occurred in farmed whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in the Republic of Korea from July to September 2025. After ruling out the major crustacean pathogens listed by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) through molecular screening, three dominant isolates of Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae were recovered from the affected shrimp. The isolates were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and confirmed by detection of the ureC gene. Phenotypic characterization showed that P. damselae subsp. damselae SNUABM-JN1 grew acr

Novel midgut smooth muscle necrosis (MSMN) in translucent or glass post-larvae of whiteleg shrimp.

From the Asia-Pacific region, the suspected TPD/GPD specimens of postlarvae (PL) at 9 days of development (PL9) preserved in Davidson's fixative and 95% ethanol were sent to our laboratory to prepare for PCR and histological analysis. Interestingly, PCR tests with the specimens were negative with the VPHLVD (vtcc2 and vtcc3 gene) primers, but positive with the VPTPD (vhvp-2 gene) primers. There were no characteristic lesions of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease detected in these specimens. However, in the sections of several specimens from two affected tanks, the midgut was cut tangentia

A study on the susceptibility of Helice tientsinensis to infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV).

Infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) is a widely distributed and highly pathogenic virus affecting shrimp. Helice tientsinensis, a key benthic crab commonly found in shrimp ponds in northern China, has unknown susceptibility to IHHNV and a potential role in viral transmission. In this study, healthy H. tientsinensis individuals were experimentally infected with IHHNV through non-invasive oral way to mimic natural exposure pathways in shrimp aquaculture systems. By day 15 post-infection, some individuals developed small black lesions on the carapace, which mostly resol

Susceptibility of Lion's paw scallop (Nodipecten subnodosus) juveniles to a pirAB-positive Vibrio campbellii strain isolated from Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp affected by Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND).

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is a serious bacterial infection affecting penaeid shrimp, caused primarily by Vibrio species harboring the pirAB toxin genes. While AHPND has been studied extensively in shrimp, its potential impact on other marine invertebrates remains largely unexplored. This study evaluates, for the first time, the susceptibility of juvenile lion's paw scallops (Nodipecten subnodosus) to AHPND-associated Vibrio campbellii (VCAHPND-VP3) strains isolated from Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp outbreaks. Experimental infection by immersion assays demonstrated a dose-d

Tissue and cell types infected by Ecytonucleospora hepatopenaei (EHP).

Ecytonucleospora hepatopenaei (EHP) is a microsporidian pathogen causing significant losses in shrimp aquaculture worldwide. The hepatopancreas is recognized as the primary target tissue, but the broader tissue and cell tropism of EHP and its ability to infect other components of the digestive system or non-digestive tissues remain unclear, especially when infections are intense and the host physiology is compromised. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the histopathology of EHP infections in severely infected Penaeus vannamei to determine its tissue and cell tropism and assess the

Analysis of intestinal metabolites in Litopenaeus vannamei infected with white faeces syndrome based on untargeted metabolomics.

White faeces syndrome (WFS) has always been one of the main intestinal diseases of Litopenaeus vannamei, which has caused huge economic losses to shrimp farming. WFS infection is known to result from a combination of pathogens, but the changes in intestinal metabolites following WFS infection are unknown. In this study, morphological sections of the hepatopancreas and intestine of WFS infected shrimp were analyzed, and lesions were found in the hepatopancreas and intestine of infected shrimp. The hepatopancreatic bodies of shrimp infected with WFS were arranged and scattered, and the stellate

Pre-fired microsporidian spores lose their infectivity in shrimp.

Shrimp industry has been negatively impacted by growth retardation and size variation, which are caused by an infectious disease called hepatopancreatic microsporidiosis (HPM). The causative agent of HPM is a microsporidian Ecytonucleospora (Enterocytozoon) hepatopenaei or EHP. EHP invades shrimp hepatopancreatic cells by a spore stage, which can germinate when the spore encounters suitable conditions. During the spore germination, a specialized organelle called the polar tube extrudes from the spore and pierces the host cell membrane. Recently, our lab has identified that potassium hydrogen p

An improved comprehensive method for collecting single nuclei from shrimp ovaries.

Single-nucleus sequencing is a powerful tool for studying ovarian development. However, a standardized protocol for single-nucleus isolation in crustaceans is currently lacking. In this study, the key parameters for preparing nuclei suspension of Litopenaeus vannamei were optimized systematically for the first time, employing evaluation methods such as HE staining, trypan blue staining, scanning electron microscopy, 10 × Genomics quality control data, and t-SNE plots. The results showed that the optimal lysis efficiency of fresh ovarian tissue was achieved by manually grinding with 0.1% NP40 f

Non-Contact Phenotypic Measurement and Body Mass Prediction of Penaeus japonicus Based on Skeletonization and Multi-View Comparison.

To address systematic errors in prawn total length measurement caused by natural curvature and challenges in body mass prediction under random postures in aquaculture, this study proposes an automated phenotypic measurement and body mass prediction framework integrating skeleton-based nonlinear length estimation and multi-view feature analysis. Instance segmentation (YOLO11n-seg) obtains prawn head and abdomen masks. A skeleton-based procedure combining Zhang-Suen thinning, branch pruning, and graph-based path extraction obtains the projected body centerline for curved length measurement, whil

Effects of chemical factors on the infectivity of Decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1).

The effects of chemical factors on the infectivity of DIV1 have not been fully accessed yet. In order to investigate the stability of DIV1 to strong brine, pH, and other chemical conditions, we conducted a bioassay using clinically healthy Penaeus vannamei individuals. DIV1 inoculum was exposed to various chemical conditions, and the infectivity of DIV1 was determined through intramuscular injection. The results showed that DIV1 lost its infectivity when exposed to strong brine, specifically in a 3 mol/L NaCl solution for a duration of 1 h. Moreover, DIV1 was found to be inactivated within 1 h

Transcriptome analysis of hepatopancreas of Litopenaeus vannamei after acute exposure to Alexandrium pacificum.

Alexandrium pacificum is a toxic species among red tide-forming organisms. Red tide outbreaks can cause seawater hypoxia and discoloration, which impair shrimp feeding and may facilitate toxin accumulation. Exposure to A. pacificum has been linked to oxidative stress and immune disruption in Litopenaeus vannamei, highlighting the need to understand the pathogenic mechanisms involved. To investigate the immune response induced in L. vannamei upon exposure to A. pacificum. Healthy shrimp (2.5 ± 0.5 g) were immersed in A. pacificum lysate (1.0 × 104 cells·mL-1) or natural seawater (control). The
