Degradation of tetracyclines by peracetic acid and UV/peracetic acid: Reactive species and theoretical computations.

As an environment-friendly oxidant and disinfectant, peracetic acid (PAA) and PAA based-advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the treatment of emerging micropollutants have raised increasing interest, owing to their ease of activation and less generation of harmful disinfection byproducts. Tetracyclines (TCs) antibiotics as a group of wide-spectrum antibiotics are frequently detected in sewage effluents, while the knowledge of PAA-based advanced oxidation reactions to remove the substrates is quite limited. In this work, we systematically investigated the kinetics and underlying transformati

Peracetic acid: Structural elucidation for applications in wastewater treatment.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is an oxidizer widely used for the sterilization of equipment in hospitals, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries and also for water and wastewater disinfection. Even with its increasing applications, there have been no previous theoretical studies that explain the experimental results based on its molecular behavior. In this context, this work used calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) combined with experimental results to elucidate the decomposition mechanisms of PAA for predicting its stability and the possible products generated from its deco

Removal of sulfamethoxazole by Fe(III)-activated peracetic acid combined with ascorbic acid.

Ascorbic acid (AA) was used as a reducing agent to improve the Fe(III)-activated peracetic acid (PAA) system for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in this work. The efficiency, influencing factors and mechanism of SMX elimination in the AA/Fe(III)/PAA process were studied. The results exhibited that AA facilitated the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and subsequently improved the activation of PAA and H2O2. Various radicals, including organic radicals (e.g. CH3C(O)O• and CH3C(O)OO•) and hydroxyl radical (HO•), were rapidly formed from the activated PAA and H2O2, resulting in SMX removal. Inc

Enhanced Degradation of Micropollutants in a Peracetic Acid-Fe(III) System with Picolinic Acid.

Activation of peracetic acid (PAA) with iron species is an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP). This study investigates the use of the chelating agent picolinic acid (PICA) to extend the pH range and enhance the performance of the PAA-Fe(III) AOP. Compared to the PAA-Fe(III) system, the PAA-Fe(III)-PICA system degrades various micropollutants (MPs: methylene blue, naproxen, sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine, trimethoprim, diclofenac, and bisphenol-A) much more rapidly at higher pH, achieving almost complete removal of parent compounds within 10 min. PAA significantly outperforms the coexis

Description and evaluation of a peracetic acid air sampling and analysis method.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a corrosive chemical with a pungent odor, which is extensively used in occupational settings and causes various health hazards in exposed workers. Currently, there is no US government agency recommended method that could be applied universally for the sampling and analysis of PAA. Legacy methods for determining airborne PAA vapor levels frequently suffered from cross-reactivity with other chemicals, particularly hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Therefore, to remove the confounding factor of cross-reactivity, a new viable, sensitive method was developed for assessment of PAA ex

In-Use Evaluation of Peracetic Acid for High-Level Disinfection of Endoscopes.

Many high-level disinfectants have been used for disinfection of endoscopes such as 2% glutaraldehyde (GA), 0.55% ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA), and peracetic acid (PAA). Both GA and OPA are widely used in disinfection of endoscopes and have been previously discussed, but there is little research on the practical use of PAA as an endoscope disinfectant. An experimental model of a flexible gastrointestinal endoscope being contaminated with 9 strains of microorganism was designed. After the cleaning and disinfecting procedure was completed, we evaluated the biocidal activity (850 ppm PAA, 2% GA, an

Tendon allograft sterilized by peracetic acid/ethanol combined with gamma irradiation.

BACKGROUND: Research and clinical applications have demonstrated that the effects of tendon allografts are comparable to those of autografts when reconstructing injured tendons or ligaments, but allograft safety remains problematic. Sterilisation could eliminate or decrease the possibility of disease transmission, but current methods seldom achieve satisfactory sterilisation without affecting the mechanical properties of the tendon. HYPOTHESIS: Peracetic acid-ethanol in combination with low-dose gamma irradiation (PE-R) would inactivate potential deleterious microorganisms without affecting m

Interlayer Confinement Steers Peracetic Acid Activation Toward Nearly Exclusive Singlet Oxygen Generation.

Precisely controlling reaction pathway is vital for selective oxidation chemistry but remains challenging due to the complexity of oxidant-catalyst interactions, especially during activation of peracetic acid (PAA) that offers greater structural flexibility than inorganic oxidants. While various catalyst engineering approaches are available to strengthen PAA nonradical catalysis, they fail to fundamental suppress radicals generation. Here, we propose an interlayer confinement strategy to deterministically reprogram the PAA activation pathway toward singlet oxygen (1O2) generation. By stabilizi

Effect of Peracetic Acid Formulation on Hygiene Indicator Bacteria in Cut Salads.

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of peracetic acid formulation (PAA) in the cut salads as a model food with different treatment conditions and observed their effect on the shelf life. This study revealed that at 80 ppm PAA, the standard for use on vegetables, showed a temporary and weak bactericidal effect. Additionally, there was no improvement in the shelf life of the cut salad. In contrast, PAA treatment at 240 ppm significantly reduced and suppressed the growth of hygiene indicator bacteria for 7 days. Moreover, no injured bacteria were produced due to proper sterilization. Based on

Peracetic Acid: A Practical Alternative to Formalin for Disinfection of Extracted Human Teeth.

Extracted human teeth provide the closest approximation to teeth in situ and play important roles in dental education and materials research. Since extracted teeth are potentially infectious, the Centers for Disease Control recommend their sterilization by autoclaving or disinfection by formalin immersion to ensure safe handling. However, autoclaving is not recommended for teeth with amalgam fillings and formalin is hazardous. The goal of the present study was to investigate the potential of peracetic acid (PA) as an alternative method to achieve reliable disinfection of freshly extracted teet

Peracetic acid effects on human bronchial cells in an air liquid interface.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is an organic peroxide commonly used as a disinfectant or sterilizing agent across many industries such as in agriculture, water treatment plants, and healthcare facilities. PAA is versatile, effective, and is considered environmentally friendly due to its decomposition products which include acetic acid, oxygen, and water. However, occupational researchers recognize that it is also highly corrosive as well as a strong oxidizer, and exposure to peracetic acid can severely irritate the respiratory system and this mixture can even act as an asthmagen. To determine the effect

Evaluation of Low-Temperature Sterilization using Hydrogen Peroxide Gas Containing Peracetic Acid.

In low-temperature sterilization for the medical field, hydrogen peroxide sterilization is widely used for its safety. However, its low penetrability and residual amount of sterilant are major concerns. Recently, the combination of hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid has been found to enforce sporicidal effect, with low concentration in hydrogen peroxide. The application of this finding in medical sterilization is still very limited. To elucidate the combination effect, we compare peracetic acid containing hydrogen peroxide gas sterilizer and conventional hydrogen peroxide gas (plasma) steril

Keratinocyte Cytotoxicity of Peracetic Acid Used as Sterilizing Agent for Implant Scaffolds.

Peracetic acid (PAA) has been used to sterilize biomaterial scaffolds and allografts before their implantation. Although the antimicrobial effectiveness of PAA is widely known, there are no studies investigating its cytotoxicity on keratinocytes. This study aimed to investigate the cytotoxicity of PAA concentrations on keratinocytes by growing HaCaT cells in culture medium. Different concentrations of PAA (control-untreated, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1200, 1600, and 2000 ppm) were added to the culture wells and allowed to be in direct contact with cells for up to 24 hours. [Efficient killing of anthrax spores using aqueous and alcoholic peracetic acid solutions].

We analysed the sporicidal effect of different concentrations of aqueous and alcoholic peracetic acid (PAA) solutions on anthrax spores in suspension and germ carrier tests. In activation of anthrax spores in suspension assays was achieved in less than 2 min using 1% PAA solution and in less than 3 min using 0.5% PAA solution, respectively. In contrast, in germ carrier as says, a test under practical conditions, spores on 38% of the germ carriers survived treatment with 1% PAA solution for 15 min. The use of PAA in 80% ethyl alcohol outclassed the sporicidal effect of aqueous PAA solutions in

Ultraviolet/peracetic acid for degradation of antiviral drugs and control of disinfection risk.

The efficient removal of antiviral drugs (ATVs) from the water environment and the mitigation their associated disinfection risks are crucial for ensuring water quality safety. In this work, a UV-LED/PAA advanced oxidation system was constructed for the oxidative degradation of Chloroquine Phosphate (CQP), with ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LED) serving as the light source and peracetic acid (PAA) as the oxidant. Under optimal conditions of an initial CQP concentration of 10 mg/L, a PAA concentration of 5 mM, a UV intensity of 0.0263 mW/cm2, pH 4, and a temperature of 25 °C, the UV-LED
