Perceived everyday discrimination, socioeconomic status, and mammography behavior.

Black women (BW) experience age-adjusted breast cancer mortality rates that are 40% higher than White women. Although, screening rates for breast cancer are similar between White and Black women, differences in mammography utilization exist among women with lower socioeconomic status (SES). Moreover, perceived everyday discrimination (PED) has been shown to have an inverse relationship on health screening behavior among BW. However, mammography behaviors of BW with low SES, who also report higher levels of PED, is not well known. This study aims to explore the relationship between perceived di

Maternal perceived discrimination and association with gestational diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychosocial stress, including experiences of discrimination, has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Perceived discrimination may activate the chronic stress response, the downstream effects of which include dysregulation of metabolic and immune systems. The effect of perceived discrimination on the development of gestational diabetes mellitus, a metabolic disorder of pregnancy, has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between perceived maternal discrimination and incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus. STUDY DESIGN: A p

Longitudinal Associations Between Perceived Discrimination and Suicidality in Youth.

Research among adults reveals robust associations between discrimination and suicidality. However, the relationship between discrimination and suicidality is understudied in youth. Participants in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (n = 10  312) completed a measure of discrimination based on multiple attributes. The Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia was administered 1 year later to assess depressive disorders and suicidality (ideation and behavior). Logistic regressions, adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, family income, lifetime depressive disorders,

Relationship between perceived discrimination and sedentary behavior in adults.

OBJECTIVE: To identify psychosocial factors associated with sedentary behavior, we tested whether perceived discrimination is associated with sedentary behavior. METHODS: Black and white men and women (N = 3270) from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study reported experiences of discrimination and time engaged in total and screen time sedentary behaviors in 2010-11. RESULTS: There were no associations of discriminatory experiences with total sedentary behavior time. However, discriminatory experiences were positively associated with screen time for black men (OR

Perceived discrimination among severely disadvantaged people with HIV infection.

OBJECTIVES: Studies continue to document that people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) experience discrimination in their interactions with the health-care system, which can have negative implications for maintaining continuity in care and outcomes. We explored the patient characteristics associated with perceived discrimination and whether these experiences are associated with health-care system quality ratings in a survey of severely disadvantaged people with HIV who are at great risk of inconsistent access to appropriate health care. METHODS: Five hundred and twenty-three participant

Different faces of discrimination: perceived discrimination among homeless adults with mental illness in healthcare settings.

BACKGROUND: Research on discrimination in healthcare settings has primarily focused on health implications of race-based discrimination among ethno-racial minority groups. Little is known about discrimination experiences of other marginalized populations, particularly groups facing multiple disadvantages who may be subjected to other/multiple forms of discrimination. OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine the prevalence of perceived discrimination due to homelessness/poverty, mental illness/alcohol/drug related problems, and race/ethnicity/skin color while seeking healthcare in the past year among racial

Perceived discrimination, social support, and perceived stress among people living with HIV/AIDS in China.

Perceived stress among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) was associated with severe mental health problems and risk behaviors. Discrimination toward PLWH in China is prevalent. Both perceived discrimination and social supports are determinants of the stress level among PLWH. Psychological support services for PLWH in China are scarce. It is unknown whether social support is a buffer between the perceived discrimination and perceived stress. With written consent, this study surveyed 258 PLWH recruited from multiple sources in two cities in China. Instruments were validated in previous or the p

Perceived discrimination and youth vaping: The role of intersectional identities.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes (also termed e-cigarette or vapes) often contain nicotine, an addictive psychoactive substance, which can have harmful effects during adolescence. Frequent experiences of discrimination are one risk factor shown to increase susceptibility to tobacco use, especially for individuals that identify as a social minority. Applying Intersectionality Theory, this research examined the relationship between youth experiences of discrimination and vape use at the intersection of race/ethnicity and sexual orientation. METHOD: Cross-sectional survey data from 4747 youth

Insurance Types, Usual Sources of Health Care, and Perceived Discrimination.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination can compromise access to and utilization of health care and lead to poorer health. As such, it is important to understand the factors associated with experiences of discrimination in health care. METHODS: Using data from the 2015 to 2017 California Health Interview Survey (n = 63,100), this study examined whether insurance types and sites of usual sources of care were associated with reasons for perceived discrimination in health care and whether the reasons were associated with delaying health care. Odds of study outcomes were calculated among insured adults usin

Demographic and clinical features related to perceived discrimination in schizophrenia.

Perceived discrimination contributes to the development of internalized stigma among those with schizophrenia. Evidence on demographic and clinical factors related to the perception of discrimination among this population is both contradictory and scarce in low- and middle-income countries. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study is to determine the demographic and clinical factors predicting the perception of discrimination among Mexican patients with schizophrenia. Two hundred and seventeen adults with paranoid schizophrenia completed an interview on their demographic status and clinical

Patterns in perceived employment discrimination for adults with multiple sclerosis.

Using multiple correspondence analysis, data from the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (1992-2003) were examined for types and patterns of allegations of discrimination filed by adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Women comprised the majority of the Charging Parties (n=687, 67%), and most of the Charging Parties were White (n=769, 76%). The total number of allegations studied (N=3,668) was divided into two datasets, specifically 1,142 occurring separately and 2,526 occurring as part of a multiple allegation set. The four mos

Relationship between adverse childhood experiences and perceived discrimination in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and perceived discrimination impact health overtime, however little is known about their association. METHODS: Data for 6,325 participants in the Midlife in the US (MIDUS) study were analyzed across three waves of data. ACEs included emotional or physical abuse, household dysfunction, or financial strain in childhood. Generalized Linear Models with Generalized Estimating Equation approach was used to test the unadjusted and adjusted associations for ACEs and perceived discrimination and perceived inequality. RESULTS: Individuals with ACEs repo

Perceived discrimination and psychotic experiences in the English general population.

BACKGROUND: Perceived discrimination has been linked to psychotic experiences (PEs). However, as yet, information is lacking on the relationship between different forms of discrimination and PEs. This study examined this association in the English general population. METHODS: Nationally representative, cross-sectional data were analyzed from 7363 adults aged 16 and above that came from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, 2007. Self-reported information was obtained on six forms of discrimination (ethnicity, sex, religious beliefs, age, physical health problems/disability, sexual orientati

Beyond Perceived Discrimination: Weight Discrimination in College Social Networks Is Associated With Poorer Mental and Behavioral Health.

BACKGROUND: Weight discrimination is associated with poorer health but has not been studied using social network analysis. This is surprising, as discrimination is a highly social phenomenon, and peer relationships are associated with health, discrimination, and behavior. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze relationships between freshman health and weight discrimination in college social networks during October through December 2021. DESIGN: This study used a cross-sectional design to analyze data from the Freshman Life and Student Health project. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Participa

Explaining Substance Use among Puerto Rican Older Adults: Impact of Perceived Discrimination, Perceived Stress, and Social Activities.

Background: Despite Puerto Ricans having one of the highest rates of substance use among Hispanic groups in the United States, limited research has focused on the impact of perceived discrimination and stress on substance use among older adults. Individuals who experience stressful events are inclined to engage in harmful behaviors as a coping mechanism. Objectives: Based on the propositions of the General Strain Theory, the current study explores the relationship between perceived discrimination, perceived stress, social activities, and the use of alcohol and cigarettes. Perceived sex discrimination amplifies the effect of antagonism on cigarette smoking.

INTRODUCTION: Compared to men, the decline in smoking during the past few decades has been slower for women, and smoking-related morbidity and mortality has increased substantially. Identifying sex-specific risk factors will inform more targeted intervention/prevention efforts. The purpose of this research is to examine the interactive effect of psychological (trait antagonism) and social (perceived sex discrimination) factors on current cigarette smoking and whether these effects differ by sex. METHODS: Participants in the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span stud

Perceived discrimination and mental health symptoms among Black men with HIV.

People living with HIV (PLWH) exhibit more severe mental health symptoms, including depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, than do members of the general public. We examined whether perceived discrimination, which has been associated with poor mental health in prior research, contributes to greater depression and PTSD symptoms among HIV-positive Black men who have sex with men (MSM), who are at high risk for discrimination from multiple stigmatized characteristics (HIV-serostatus, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation). A total of 181 Black MSM living with HIV completed aud
