It is known that a high concentration of iron is deposited in the enameloid of some teleostean fish. Previously, Suga et al. (1989) pointed out that the iron concentration in the enameloid is related to the phylogeny of fish rather than to the feeding habits, according to the results of quantitative iron analyses on the teeth of marine teleost fish of the Tetraodontiformes. In the present study, in order for the previous idea to be verified, quantitative iron analysis was made with an electron microprobe on the enameloid of fish belonging to the Perciformes, which is the largest group of teleo

Raphidascarididae are among the most abundant and widespread parasitic nematodes in the marine environment. The life-cycle of most raphidascaridid species is poorly known and information about their distribution and host range is lacking in many geographical areas, as is the taxonomy of several species. A study of larval and adult stages of Hysterothylacium fabri (Rudolphi, 1819) Deardorff and Overstreet, 1980 (Nematoda: Raphidascarididae) infecting the striped goatfish Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus, 1758 (Mullidae) and the Mediterranean stargazer Uranoscopus scaber Linnaeus, 1759 (Uranoscopidae)

Species in the genus Hypoplectrus are found primarily in coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, particularly around Florida and the Bahamas. They are a popular choice for hobbyist saltwater aquariums. Members of this genus are simultaneous hermaphrodites, as they have both male and female sexual organs at the same time as an adult. We present the genome sequences of 7 species of Hypoplectrus. Raw read data and assembled genomes are available in Genbank.

Several studies pointed out that skeletal abnormalities, although widespread among species, are rare in wild populations. There is a gap in the knowledge of such anomalies on endangered fish species regarding types of deformities, geographical distribution, and possible consequences on key behaviors. Here, we describe new records of skeleton deformities in the endangered Atlantic Goliath Grouper (AGG), Epinephelus itajara, based on 20 years of scientific dives and collections focused on studing AGG spawning aggregations and movement using telemetry in Florida (U.S.) and along the Brazilian coa

Eelpouts of the family Zoarcidae comprise a monophyletic group of marine fishes with a worldwide distribution. Centers of high zoarcid diversity occur in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, with important radiations into the Arctic, along southern South America, and into the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. Along with snailfishes (Liparidae), zoarcids form an important component of the non-notothenioid fauna in the subzero shelf waters of Antarctica. We document the anatomy and histology of the brains, cranial nerves, olfactory apparatus, cephalic lateral lines, taste buds, and retinas of t

This study presents a redescription of the Japanese Shortspined Scorpionfish, Scorpaena brevispina, a previously described species based on limited morphological data from the holotype. The redescription incorporates an expanded dataset from 14 collected specimens from the Sagami Sea, Japan, including additional morphological characters, meristic counts, and morphometric analyses, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the species. Morphological comparisons with closely related taxa support the validity of S. brevispina, refining its diagnostic characters: 4446 scale rows in longitudi

A new flathead Rogadius azizahae (Platycephalidae) is described on the basis of five specimens [102.5-107.8 mm standard length (SL)] collected off the east coast of the Malay Peninsula, southern South China Sea. The new species is morphologically similar to Rogadius mcgroutheri Imamura, 2007, known from the Coral Sea off eastern Australia and New Caledonia, the two species sharing most diagnostic characters, including a minute, weakly developed antrorse spine on the preopercle [vs. a long, stout antrorse spine present in Rogadius asper (Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1829), Rogadius fehlmann

The leopard coral grouper, Plectropomus leopardus Lacepède, 1802, is an ecologically and economically important species in the family Epinephelidae. However, the absence of a complete reference genome has impeded advanced genetic research on this species, and the phylogenetic position of Epinephelidae within Perciformes remains unresolved. Here, we generated a complete telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genome assembly (887.20 Mb; contig N50: 39.03 Mb; QV: 67) for P. leopardus with no need for gap-filling. Leveraging this genome combined with other available genome resources, we conducted a large-scal

In the subzero shelf waters of Antarctica, fishes of the perciform suborder Notothenioidei dominate the fish fauna and constitute an adaptive radiation and a species flock. The 16 species of dragonfishes of the family Bathydraconidae live from surface waters to nearly 3,000 m and have the greatest overall depth range among notothenioid families. We examined the anatomy and histology of the brain, retina, and cephalic lateral line system of nine bathydraconid species representing 8 of the 11 known genera. We evaluate these data against a cladogram identifying three clades in the family. We prov

A new species of sillaginid fish, Sillago persica sp. nov., is described from 30 specimens collected along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf (Busher), Iran. Morphological comparisons with 15 congeneric species, including members of the S. sihama complex, show that S. persica closely resembles S. sihama in meristic counts and coloration but is clearly distinguished by a unique swim bladder morphology. The posterior sub-extensions of the anterolateral swim bladder extensions in S. persica display a complex structure comprising five broad extensions connected to the swim bladder body, a feat

Pseudorhabdosynochus jeanloui n. sp. (Monogenoidea, Diplectanidae) is described from specimens collected from the gills of the Pacific creolefish, Paranthias colonus (Perciformes, Serranidae) from a fish market in Chorrillos, Lima, Peru. The new species is differentiated from other members of the genus by the structure of its sclerotized vagina, which has two spherical chambers of similar diameter. This is the first Pseudorhabdosynochus species described from the Pacific coast of America, the third species of the genus reported from South America and the first described from a member of Parant

Ascarophis valentina n. sp. is described from Mullus surmuletus off the Valencian coast of Spain on the basis of both light and scanning electron microscopy. It can be distinguished from the other members of the genus by the length of the left (long) spicule of the males and by egg morphology. An updated grouping of the species of Ascarophis considered valid is provided with respect to these characters. The new species resembles Ascarophis capelanus, belonging to the group of species possessing eggs with a single polar knob with filaments, but is distinguished by the size of the body, the leng

The transmembrane receptor complex of Interleukin-10 (IL-10), comprising the IL-10Rα subunit and IL-10Rβ subunits, belong to the class Ⅱ cytokine receptor family. In the present study, IL-10Rα and IL-10Rβ were characterized in Nibea albiflora (referred to as NaIL-10Rα (MZ620685.1) and NaIL-10Rβ (OK149228.1)), whose full-length cDNA sequences were 2745bp (NaIL-10Rα) containing an ORF of 1755 bp that encoded a protein of 584 aa, and 1570bp (NaIL-10Rβ) with an ORF 975 bp encoding a protein of 324 aa, respectively. Both receptor subunits contained two extracellular fibronectin type Ⅲ (FNIII) domai

During a survey Myxozoa, four specimens of the sheepshead (18 ± 1.5 cm and 59 ± 2.5 g) (Archosargus probatocephalus) were collected in the Ipioquinha river (Maceió/AL). Transmission electron microscopy observations revealed erythrocyte agglutinations in gill capillaries located near spherical cysts containing myxospores of the genus Henneguya. This hemagglutination partially or totally obstructed the gill capillaries. Erythrocytes occurred in close adherence to each other, with a closed intercellular space. A few lysed erythrocytes were observed among agglutinated cells. The reduced lumen of t

Four species of the fish genus Pempheris are recognized for the Red Sea: P. adusta Bleeker, 1877; P. mangula Cuvier, 1829; P. nesogallica Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1831; and a new species P. tominagai. All are wide-ranging in the western Indian Ocean, and P. mangula has migrated via the Suez Canal to the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Morphological and genetic analysis of 15 species in this genus show that P. adusta, a widely distributed species, that can't be divided into different species, because of the continuity of morphologies and distribution, and lack of variance in genetics between

The gallbladder of Uranoscopus exhibits a mucosal surface layer of simple columnar epithelium composed of specialized cholecystocytes. The apices show storage and mucous secretions, typical microvilli, and very apical projections extending deep into the luminal contents. Many organelles and heterogeneous vesicles of diverse size fill the cytoplasm, including neutral mucins, mitochondria, peroxisomes, lysosomal bodies, and lipid-rich deposits with cholesterol inclusions. The fibromuscular layer shows little blood supply and contains scattered lymph-like walls with minute cholesterol inclusions.

The anatomy of the feeding apparatus in fishes, including both oral and pharyngeal jaw elements, is closely related to the ecology of a species. During ontogeny, the oral and pharyngeal jaws undergo dramatic changes. To better understand how such ontogenetic changes occur and relate to the feeding ecology of a species, ontogenetic series of four closely related members of the family Sciaenidae (Cynoscion nebulosus, Cynoscion regalis, Micropogonias undulatus, and Leiostomus xanthurus) were examined. Sciaenids were selected because as adults they exhibit considerable specialization of the feedin

Endosulfan (ES), a persistent organochlorine pesticide, is widely used despite its toxicity to non-target animals. Upon reaching water bodies, ES can cause negative effects on aquatic animals, including disruption of hormonal systems. However, the action of ES on fish reproductive axis has been hardly studied thus far. The aim of the present work was to assess the endocrine disruptive potential of endosulfan on the pituitary gonadotropins levels and on the testes function due to ES in the South American freshwater fish Cichlasoma dimerus, using in vitro and in vivo approaches. In vitro experim

In the last few decades, technological developments and the widespread rise of anthropic activities have increased the exposure of organisms to noise pollution, thus evoking great interest in its biological effects, particularly on the immune system. The aim of the present work was to investigate some of the biochemical parameters in the blood of Chromis chromis (Linnaeus, 1758) following in vivo exposure to noise levels of 200 and 300 Hz. Our results revealed that, compared to the control specimens, the fish exposed to noise had significantly increased levels of stress biomarkers such as gluc

A new species of Sanguinicola Plehn, 1905 is described from the marine teleosts Notolabrus parilus (Richardson) and N. tetricus (Richardson) (Perciformes: Labridae) from Western Australian and Tasmanian waters. This host distribution is strikingly anomalous; however, the present material fulfils the morphological criteria of Sanguinicola. S. maritimus n. sp. differs from previously described species in having the combination of a body 1,432--1,701 mum long, the oesophagus 18.3--21.7% of the body length, the testis occupying 42.8--52.3% of the body length, an oviducal seminal receptacle and Meh
