Millions of partially or fully edentulous patients worldwide have been treated by means of dental implants ever since the description of the osseointegration process by PI Brånemark. Despite high success rates, different biological and mechanical complications do occur. Peri-implantitis is a chronical infection around dental implants with irreversible crestal bone loss. Like periodontitis, peri-implantitis is a multifactorial disease caused by pathogenic species in a sensitive host. Today treatment of peri-implantitis is highly unpredictable, hence regular follow-up and prevention seems warran

Peri-implant diseases are defined as inflammatory lesions of the surrounding peri-implant tissues and include peri-implant mucositis (an inflammatory lesion limited to the surrounding mucosa of an implant) and peri-implantitis (an inflammatory lesion of the mucosa that affects the supporting bone with resulting loss of osseointegration). This review aims to describe the different approaches to manage both entities and to provide a critical evaluation of the evidence available on their efficacy. Therapy of peri-implant mucositis and nonsurgical therapy of peri-implantitis usually involve mechan

As utilisation of dental implants continues to rise, so does the incidence of biological complications. When peri-implantitis has already caused extensive bone resorption, the dentist faces the dilemma of which therapy is the most appropriate to maintain the implant. Since non-surgical approaches of peri-implantitis have shown limited effectiveness, the present paper describes different surgical treatment modalities, underlining their indications and limitations. The primary goal in the management of peri-implantitis is to decontaminate the surface of the infected implant and to eliminate deep

Peri-implantitis (PI) has been defined as an inflammatory lesion of the mucosa surrounding an endosseous implant and with progressive loss of supporting peri-implant bones. In recent years, histopathological differences between PI and periodontitis of natural teeth had been described in animal experiments and a certain number of human experiments. In this paper, we review the histopathological differences between PI and periodontitis reported in the existing literature and try to find the differences in the occurrence and progression of these two diseases. Overall, inflammatory cell infiltrate

Dental implants to replace lost teeth are a common dentistry practice nowadays. Titanium dental implants display a high success rate and improved safety profile. Nevertheless, there is an increasing peri-implantitis (PI), an inflammatory disease associated with polymicrobial infection that adversely affects the hard and soft tissues around the implant. The present review highlights the contribution of different metabolic conditions to PI. The considerations of both local and systemic metabolic conditions are crucial for planning successful dental implant procedures and during the treatment cou

AIMS: Over the past decades, the placement of dental implants has become a routine procedure in the oral rehabilitation of fully and partially edentulous patients. However, the number of patients/implants affected by peri-implant diseases is increasing. As there are--in contrast to periodontitis--at present no established and predictable concepts for the treatment of peri-implantitis, primary prevention is of key importance. The management of peri-implant mucositis is considered as a preventive measure for the onset of peri-implantitis. Therefore, the remit of this working group was to assess

Peri-implantitis is one of the most common biological complications after implant restoration which is difficult to be cured. Early and correct diagnosis is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of peri-implantitis. Although there have been consensus reports to make guiding suggestions in diagnosis, the diagnostic criteria are not uniform, resulting in many confusions. This review summarizes published consensuses on the diagnosis of peri-implantitis, analyzes the diagnostic values and limitations of traditional examination methods, and summarizes the recent advances in examina

INTRODUCTION: Squamous cell carcinoma developed around dental implants has seldom been described. It simulates peri-implantitis. The authors present two cases and a literature review.
CASE REPORTS: A 70 year-old woman presented with an exophytic tumor developed around dental implants placed in the anterior part of the mandible. Panoramic X-rays showed major osteolysis, especially around the distal abutment implants. A 72 year-old patient, smoker, presented with chronic lichen planus; he was carrying two implants supporting an overdenture with ball-attachments, placed 15 years before. He prese

Treatment of peri-implantitis follows similar steps as the therapy of periodontitis. Non-surgical interventions, however, show limited success and in many cases, don't lead to a complete resolution of the local inflammation. The scientific literature was evaluated and based on the European Federation of Periodontology's S3-level guideline, recommendations for clinical practice are presented. Despite limitations in the success of this type of treatment, it is an important first step before surgical interventions and as such may help to improve overall treatment outcomes.

PURPOSE: To describe new cases of primary malignancy arising around dental implants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three patients presented with asymptomatic lesions around longstanding dental implants that resembled peri-implantitis. One case was primary large B-cell lymphoma and the remaining cases were primary squamous cell carcinoma in patients with oral lichen planus. The literature was reviewed for cases mimicking peri-implantitis.
RESULTS: Of 42 implant-associated malignancies reported from 2000 through 2014, 85.7% were squamous cell carcinoma (69% primary and 9.4% metastatic). Most patients

The high survival rate of osseointegrated dental implants is well documented, but it is becoming increasingly clear that successfully integrated implants are susceptible to disease conditions that may lead to loss of the implant. Although placement and restoration usually are included in the domain of the periodontal, oral and maxillofacial surgery, or prosthetic specialist, given the increasing numbers of patients treated with osseointegrated fixtures, it is increasingly likely that maintenance of these implants by the general dentist will become much more common. However, the surrounding tis

Peri-implant diseases are frequent complications that occur around osseointegrated endosseous implants and are the result of an imbalance between the bacterial challenge and host response. Peri-implant diseases may affect the peri-implant mucosa only (peri-implant mucositis) or also involve the supporting bone (peri-implantitis). Early detection of peri-implant diseases and timely treatment is important for the success of dental implant treatment. Peri-implant probing is essential to assess the peri-implant health status and should be done at each recall visit. Dental practitioners should be f

Therapies proposed for the treatment of peri-implant diseases are primarily based on the evidence available from treating periodontitis. The primary objective is elimination of the biofilm from the implant surface, and nonsurgical therapy is a commonly used treatment. A number of adjunctive therapies have been introduced to overcome accessibility problems or difficulties with decontamination of implant surfaces as a result of specific surface characteristics. It is now accepted that following successful decontamination, clinicians can attempt to regenerate the bone that was lost as a result of

OBJECTS: This study aims to explore the etiology of peri-implantitis by comparing the metabolic profiles in peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) from patients with healthy implants (PH) and those with peri-implantitis (PI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. PICF samples were collected and analyzed using both non-targeted and targeted metabolomics approaches. The relationship between metabolites and clinical indices including probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and marginal bone loss (MBL) was examined. Additionally, submucosal mi

Peri-implantitis, a complex condition that can lead to dental implant failure, is characterized by inflammatory destruction resulting from immune dysregulation. Oral microbial dysbiosis and foreign body stimulation are the main factors contributing to such dysregulation, impairing immune cell function and triggering an inflammatory response. Immune dysregulation plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of peri-implantitis, impacting the balance of T cell subsets, the production of inflammatory factors, and immune-related molecular signaling pathways. Understanding the relationship between

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The aim of this study was to describe the effects of bruxism in peri-implant bone loss 6 years after the placement of a successful implant-supported prosthesis, to describe its treatment, and to propose a differential diagnosis of the lesion.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 62-year-old, nonsmoking, systemically healthy partially edentulous woman received 2 osseointegrated implants in the mandibular left region, which supported a 3-element fixed prosthesis. Six years later, the patient reported the development of bruxism. Clinical examination results indicated bleeding on probing,
