[Topical ototoxicity: review over a 6-year period].

Over a six-year period, 6 cases of local toxicity produced by gentamicin and dexamethasone ear drops were observed in Sant Pau Hospital, Barcelona. No cases due to neomycin or polymixin B were seen. All patients consulted for dizziness. Audiometric and vestibular examination revealed only involvement of the vestibular labyrinth and recovery was spontaneous. Most cases occurred during prolonged treatment without medical control and patients had extensive tympanic perforation or suppuration had ceased. In contrast with findings in animal studies, the risk of topical toxicity in humans is limited

Topical steroid drops for the treatment of sinus ostia stenosis in the postoperative period.

BACKGROUND: Chronic oral steroid use causes significant morbidity, including osteoporosis, immunosuppression, and adrenal insufficiency. Refractory chronic rhinosinusitis patients often take repeated oral steroid courses to treat polypoid disease or sinus ostia stenosis. This study evaluated topical steroid drop efficacy in treating recurrent sinus ostia stenosis in the postoperative period. METHODS: The 5-year single institution experience with topical steroid drop use after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) was evaluated by retrospective review. Patients were included if they began topical dex

[Topical herbal preparations based on essential oils in the postoperative period after FESS].

The postoperative period after endoscopic surgery of the paranasal sinuses (functional endoscopic sinus surgery - FESS) requires a comprehensive approach to the regeneration of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. In conditions of surgical trauma, there is damage to the epithelium, disruption of mucociliary clearance, activation of cascades of inflammatory reactions and microbial colonization. Natural topical preparations based on essential oils, containing components with antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and reparative action, occupy an important place in a

The efficacy of topical citrate after alkali injury is dependent on the period of time it is administered.

The neutrophilic response in the alkali-injured rabbit cornea can be separated into two peaks: the first from 12-24 hr and the second at 21 days. In the experiments detailed here, alkali-injured rabbit eyes were treated for 0-7 days (early peak), 6-35 days (late peak), or 0-35 days (both peaks) with 6.5% or 10% topical citrate. Clinical evaluation of these eyes showed that treatment with 10% citrate (0-35 days) significantly reduced the incidence and severity of corneal ulceration from the control level. When 10% citrate was administered to block the early neutrophilic peak, the incidence of c

Life-threatening hypotension in the immediate postoperative period of cataract surgery under topical anesthesia: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Cataract surgery is one of the most frequent surgeries in the world. It is a very safe procedure mostly performed under topical anesthesia in outpatients centers. Due to the growing lack of anesthesiologists, cataract surgeries are more frequently performed without an anesthesiologist present in the operating room. Although extremely rare, life-threatening complications may occur. CASES PRESENTATION: We report two cases of cataract surgery complicated by severe hypotension that required emergency resuscitation in the immediate postoperative period and hospitalization in intensive

Clinical evaluation of topical tacalcitol efficacy in extending the remission period between nb-UVB phototherapy cycles in psoriatic patients.

Psoriasis is a very common dermatological disease affecting a large part of the world population. In its most common form, psoriasis vulgaris, many topical drugs are available to treat the localized forms, and the recurrence of the dermatosis. Among topicals, tacalcitol has been proven to be effective and devoid of side effects which are typical of Vitamin-D3 analogues or derivates. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of topical tacalcitol vs. calcipotriol and emollient treatment of the first recurring lesion in order to induce a longer remission period before the

Topical immunotherapy for alopecia areata: re-evaluation of 139 cases after an additional follow-up period of 19 months.

Within a group of 139 patients previously studied during treatment for alopecia areata with diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP), hair growth was re-evaluated after a period of 19 months following completion of our previous study. Fifty-four patients treated with DCP had total and 6 had partial but cosmetically acceptable regrowth. Twenty-five patients with total regrowth had stopped DCP treatment for a mean period of 15 months and had not relapsed. Nineteen of 28 patients who still applied DCP were in the process of stepwise discontinuation of treatment. Fifteen patients had subsequently been treated

Iodine Metabolism and Thyroid Function During the Perinatal Period: Maternal-Neonatal Correlation and Effects of Topical Povidone-Iodine Skin Disinfectants.

An adequate maternal iodine intake during pregnancy and lactation is essential for growth and mental development in fetuses and newborns. There are limited data on perinatal iodine metabolism in mothers and infants, as well as the effect of povidone-iodine (PVP-I) antiseptics used in cesarean delivery. The urinary iodine concentration (UIC), serum iodine, thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), and breast milk iodine concentration (BMIC) were measured consecutively in a total of 327 mothers and 249 term-infants in two prospective studies. The maternal median UIC was 164 μg/L in the third trim

The impact of topical lidocaine and timing of LMA removal on the incidence of airway events during the recovery period in children: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The timing of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) removal remains undefined. This study aimed to assess the optimal timing for LMA removal and whether topical anesthesia with lidocaine could reduce airway adverse events. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial assessed one-to-six-year-old children with ASA I-II scheduled for squint correction surgery under general anesthesia. The children were randomized into the LA (lidocaine cream smeared to the cuff of the LMA before insertion, with mask removal in the awake state), LD (lidocaine application and LMA removal under deep anesthesia), NL

The pattern of cervical penetration and the effect of topical treatment with prostaglandin and/or FSH and oxytocin on the depth of cervical penetration in the ewe during the peri-ovulatory period.

Artificial insemination in sheep has two major limiting factors: the poor quality of frozen-thawed ram semen and the convoluted anatomy of the sheep cervix that does not allow transcervical passage of an inseminating catheter. It has been demonstrated that in the ewe during estrus, there is a degree of cervical relaxation mediated by ovarian and possibly gonadotrohic hormones, and we set out to investigate factors that might enhance cervical relaxation. Five experiments were conducted on ewes of different breeds to determine: 1) the pattern of cervical penetration during the periovulatory peri

Randomized, Double-Blind, Split-Face Study to Compare the Irritation Potential of Two Topical Acne Formulations Over a 21-Day Treatment Period.

The use of fixed combinations in acne vulgaris (acne) is very common, however comparative clinical trial data are limited. Cutaneous tolerability can influence patient compliance, and concerns about skin irritation with topical acne treatments have lead to a number of comparative split-face studies. Recently, a new fixed combination product was introduced (clin 1.0%-BP 3.75% gel) that was shown to be effective in reducing both inflammatory and noninflammatory lesions in moderate to severe acne. Here, we assess the tolerability of clin 1.0%-BP 3.75% gel compared with adap 0.1%-BP 2.5% gel in he
