The lateral periodontal cyst and isolated periodontal defects.

Over a period of 4 years, 41 isolated, advanced periodontal defects were selected for histologic examination. The objective of this study was to establish the presence of cystic epithelium. Twenty of the biopsies fulfilled the criteria for lateral periodontal cyst (LPC). These results indicate that there is a distinct possibility that proliferation of epithelial elements other than crevicular could be implicated in isolated periodontal defects.

A lateral periodontal cyst in association with a follicular cyst.

A case is described in which two separate developmental odontogenic cysts were associated with an unerupted lower third molar tooth. Radiological and histological examination showed that these were a lateral periodontal cyst and a follicular (dentigerous) cyst. This unusual occurrence provides substantial evidence that the periodontal cyst may have an origin from the cell rests of Malassez.

[Lateral periodontal cysts].

The lateral periodontal cyst is a rather infrequently reported odontogenic cyst. The cyst seems to develop in direct contact to the periodontal membrane of an erupted vital tooth. This type of cyst should not be confused with a radicular cyst in a lateral position developing as a consequence of inflammation from an infected or necrotic branch of the pulp canal. Several authors do not differentiate between the lateral periodontal cyst and the gingival cyst, but it seems justified to consider the lateral periodontal cysts as a separate entity of odontogenic cysts. In this origin of the lateral p

Osseous repair of a lateral periodontal cyst.

THE LATERAL PERIODONTAL CYSTS is a slow-growing radiolucent, developmental lesion occurring most frequently in males during the sixth decade. As part of the differential diagnosis, it must be distinguished from the collateral keratocyst and the gingival cyst of adults as well as other entities. Speculation remains as to the lateral periodontal cyst's developmental origin. Whether it is from reduced enamel epithelium, remnants of dental lamina, or cell rests of Malassez remains to be determined. The following longitudinal case report describes the review of literature and clinical and histologi

Microscopic features of the lateral periodontal cyst.

The lateral periodontal cyst is of developmental odontogenic origin and must be differentiated from the gingival cyst of adults, a primordial cyst in a lateral periodontal position, and a cyst of inflammatory origin. This paper is based on a histologic study of five cases. Four were in the mandibular premolar region and one in the lateral incisor-canine region of the maxilla. The cysts are lined by a thin non-keratinized epithelium which resembles the reduced enamel epithelium. Many of them arecharacterized by the presence of localized plaque-like thickenings of their epithelial linings, consi

Calcifying odontogenic cyst presenting as a lateral periodontal cyst--a case report.

We report a case of the calcifying odontogenic cyst occurring on the left anterior mandible of a 41-year-old male with clinical and radiographic features which made it initially to be a lateral periodontal cyst. This unusual presentation of a calcifying odontogenic cyst is discussed and its significance for the clinician is reviewed. A calcifying odontogenic cyst may present some problems for the differential diagnosis both clinically and histopathologically. The differential diagnosis of a lesion occurring in a lateral periodontal location should include the calcifying odontogenic cyst.

Gingival cyst of the adult, lateral periodontal cyst, and botryoid odontogenic cyst: An updated systematic review.

The aim of the present review was to integrate the available data published on gingival cyst of the adult (GCA), lateral periodontal cyst (LPC), and botryoid odontogenic cyst (BOC) into a comprehensive analysis of their clinical/radiological features. An electronic search was undertaken in July/2017. Eligibility criteria included publications having enough clinical/radiological/histological information to confirm the diagnosis. A total of 146 publications (157 GCAs, 213 LPCs, 96 BOCs) were included. GCA and LPC presented highest prevalence in the sixth/fifth decades; BOC in the sixth/seventh d

An unfamiliar presentation of a lateral periodontal cyst.

Lateral periodontal cyst, developmental in origin, typically is observed in the cuspid-bicuspid region of the mandible and less frequently in the maxilla. It may arise initially as a dentigerous cyst developing by expansion of the follicle along the lateral surface of the crown which eventually comes to lie on the lateral aspect of the root if tooth eruption is normal. Alternatively, it may arise from the cell rests of malassez. The incidence of lateral periodontal cysts has been reported to be less than 1% and these cysts represent nearly 0.8% of all central cysts of the maxillary bone. Here

The lateral periodontal cyst: aetiology, clinical significance and diagnosis.

The lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) is a relatively uncommon but widely recognized odontogenic cyst of developmental origin. It is found mostly in adults and has no sex predilection. LPC is usually discovered during routine radiographic examination, is located mainly between the roots of vital mandibular canines and premolars, and seldom causes pain or other clinical symptoms. The defect appears on radiographs as a round or teardrop-shaped, well circumscribed radiolucency. Due to its location it can easily be misdiagnosed as a lesion of endodontic origin. In this paper, two cases of lateral per

Lateral periodontal cyst: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The lateral periodontal cyst is considered a developmental odontogenic cyst with unusual occurrence. In most cases it is preliminary diagnosed as a radiographic finding, presenting as well circumscribed or as a round or teardrop-shaped radiolucent area. Due to its location it can easily be misdiagnosed as a lesion of endodontic origin. Final diagnosis should be based on histopatological examination. The purpose of this paper is to report a classic case of lateral periodontal cyst located in the anterior region of mandible and to review the relevant literature which describes the cl

Pigmented lateral periodontal cyst and other pigmented odontogenic lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) with marked melanin pigmentation in a 38-year-old Black male and to discuss the phenomenon of melanin pigmentation in odontogenic cysts and tumors. RESULTS: Histologically, the epithelial lining of the LPC contained an abundant amount of melanin granules throughout the entire epithelium. Ultrastructurally, epithelial cells contained mature melanosomes (stage IV melanosomes). Melanophages containing aggregates of melanosomes were identified in the connective tissue cyst wall. Perusal of the literature revealed that melanin pigmentat

Immunohistochemical study of apical periodontal cysts.

Periapical lesions, as well as periodontal disease, seems to have cyclic patterns of evolution. Periods of burst may be intercalated with periods of quiescence. Because keratinocyte division must occur during cyst growth, it is presumed that epithelium status could indicate the biological activity of radicular cysts (RCs). Th1 and Th2 are important heterogeneous stages of lymphocyte differentiation. Delayed-type hypersensitivity immune reactions are mediated by Th1 lymphocytes, whereas Th2 populations mediate some types of humoral immune response. Th2 lymphocytes are characterized by high expr

Odontogenic Keratocyst of the Anterior Mandible Mimicking Lateral Periodontal Cyst.

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is thought to be an odontogenic cyst of developmental origin that can arise at any place in the jaws, but mostly occurs in the mandibular angle and ramus area. It is clinically indistinguishable from a lateral periodontal cyst. A proper diagnosis can only be made based on histopathological examination. A 47-year-old woman presented with a gingival swelling on the inner aspect of the anterior region of the lower jaw. The swelling was of one year's duration and asymptomatic. Intraoral periapical radiograph revealed a well-defined oval radiolucency in the interradicul

Respiratory epithelium in an apical periodontal cyst of the mandible.

A cyst attached to the apex of a mandibular canine was partly lined with respiratory epithelium. This is an interesting observation for two reasons: (1) The few well-documented instances of this type of epithelium in apical periodontal cysts have been in the maxilla, where a plausible source for the respiratory epithelium for most of them was a breach in the floor of the maxillary sinus. (2) The mandibular location of the cyst reported here indicates that the respiratory epithelium within it was derived through proliferation and metaplasia of the rests of Malassez.

Lateral periodontal cyst. Multifactorial analysis of a previously unreported series.

The objective of the present study was to review a series of 23 lateral periodontal cysts and 2 botryoid odontogenic cysts retrieved from the files of the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY) Oral Pathology Biopsy Service for epidemiologic characteristics as well as radiographic findings, clinical presentation, histopathologic features, and management. This study corroborated some previously established characteristics of the lesion but also revealed some surprising aberrations. A significant difference in the age range and mean age by gender was detected with the Student's t test wi
