Periodontal diseases comprise a wide range of inflammatory conditions that affect the supporting structures of the teeth (the gingiva, bone and periodontal ligament), which could lead to tooth loss and contribute to systemic inflammation. Chronic periodontitis predominantly affects adults, but aggressive periodontitis may occasionally occur in children. Periodontal disease initiation and propagation is through a dysbiosis of the commensal oral microbiota (dental plaque), which then interacts with the immune defences of the host, leading to inflammation and disease. This pathophysiological situ

Research into pathogenesis and therapy of periodontal diseases have advanced considerably over the last 15 years. Basic research has disclosed anatomic and morphologic "weak spots" in the periodontium at the marginal gingiva and the interdental space. Approximately 70 microorganisms were isolated, among them many gram negative anaerobic bacteria. Products of these bacteria comprise of enzymes which destroy the periodontal connective tissue and interfere with immunologic mechanisms. Based on this knowledge several diseases are differentiated. A correct diagnosis contributes to a favorable thera

Necrotizing gingivitis (NG) or necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is considered to be an acute opportunistic gingival infection caused by bacterial plaque. It appears more frequently in undernurished children and young adults as well as patients with immunodeficiency. In its pathogenesis, there are factors related to the oral microbiota with invasion processes on the one hand, and on the other hand, factors associated with the host, such as signs of capillary and immunological disorders as well as undernurishment. The disease is characterized by pain, bleeding and papillary necrosis with

At present, the diagnosis of periodontal disease requires a clinical evaluation of the patient including visual findings, the use of the periodontal probe, and radiographs. No test is available to evaluate disease activity. In specific cases, adjunctive procedures may also be useful. The identification of pathogenic microorganisms may aid in evaluating the periodontal status of special patients. However, these are not required for an adequate diagnosis of the common adult form of chronic periodontitis.

Pregnancy induces significant hormonal, immunological, and physiological changes that affect the periodontium. These modifications increase vascular permeability, alter subgingival microbiota, and modulate immune defenses, making women more susceptible to gingivitis, epulis, and the progression of pre-existing periodontitis. Gingivitis affects up to 75% of pregnant women, while epulis gravidarum, although less frequent, also reflects the impact of hormonal and inflammatory responses. Periodontitis, a chronic destructive disease, has been studied as a possible risk factor for adverse pregnancy

Periodontal diseases, a group of complex conditions marked by an excessive immune response and periodontal tissue destruction, are a global health concern. Since 1990, the incidence of these diseases has doubled, with Western sub-Saharan Africa experiencing the highest burden. Accurate diagnosis and case identification are crucial for understanding the etiology, features of disease, research, treatment and prevention. Modern perspectives on periodontal disease classification are based on commonality among those affected. However, current literature is often plagued by methodological inconsiste

Asia encompasses three of the four most populous nations in the world (China, India and Indonesia), accounting for nearly two-fifths of the worlds' total population. Over half of the world's population now inhabits Asia, which by definition includes countries of the Middle East and some former Socialist Soviet Republics. There has been a generally held view that Asians are particularly susceptible to periodontitis. The aim of this review is to consider the reasons for this view having become entrenched and to examine the evidence on which it could have been established and sustained. This view

The location of plaque-associated gingivitis at the gingival portion of the tooth plays an essential role in its genesis. However, at times local and other host response modifying factors also have an influence. The pathogeny of periodontitis is more complex. The microorganisms that comprise subgingival plaque are capable of acting directly on periodontal tissues or of modifying the host response, whereas the participation of the plaque per se (normal, decreased, or increased) is as decisive as the action of the bacteria themselves in the emergence of the disease. Different types of periodonti

Periodontal diseases are a series of complex, distinct, pathologic entities caused by the interaction of bacterial plaque and the host. This interaction results in destruction of the supporting alveolar bone and connective tissue. Although bacterial plaque has been implicated as the primary etiologic agent in most forms of periodontal disease, there are local and systemic factors which may modify both microbial and host components. Local factors may favor plaque accumulation and maturation, while systemic factors may modulate and decrease the host's protective response.

This paper reviews current (Fall, 1990) information related to the diagnosis of periodontal diseases. As background, principles of diagnostic decision-making and conceptual shifts during the 1970's and 1980's are reviewed in brief. "Diseases" that appeared in many classification schemes for periodontal diseases in the early 1970's--for example, "periodontosis" and "occlusal trauma"--do not appear in most current classifications. A recent (1989a) classification recommended by the American Academy of Periodontology holds that "periodontitis" includes several different diseases. There is, indeed,

Contemporary hypotheses that consider the severe forms of periodontal disease to be infections caused by site-specific microbes fail to satisfactorily explain the epidemiologic, anthropologic, and clinical features of periodontal diseases. The microbes that have been designated as periodontopathogens are commensal bacteria present in periodontal health and disease. Association of specific bacteria with various disease forms has been established, but association is confused with causation. None of the periodontal diseases can be transmitted between individuals or between diseased and healthy si

Periodontal diseases are a range of polymicrobial infectious disorders, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which affect tooth-supporting tissues and are linked to playing a role in the exacerbation of several pulmonary diseases. Pulmonary diseases, such as pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, tuberculosis, COVID-19, and bronchiectasis, significantly contribute to poor quality of life and mortality. The association between periodontal disease and pulmonary outcomes is an important topic and requires further attention. Numerous resident microorganisms coexist in th

Periodontitis is a complex disease, depending on genetic and environmental factors. In its early stage, a local response of the innate immune system takes place, resulting in a release of neutrophils, whose activation is evoked by endogenous chemokines, a subtype of cytokines family. In this review, the immunological activity of as well as essential participation of cytokines in the induction and modulation of effector mechanisms in the pathogenesis of periodontitis was described. The characteristics of genetic polymorphisms in the promoter regions for cytokine transcription was given, as well

Periodontal disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, is a chronic inflammatory condition that leads to the destruction of the supporting structures of teeth. The disease is characterized by a complex immune response, where cytokines play a central role in regulating both inflammation and tissue breakdown. Cytokines are small signaling proteins that mediate communication between immune cells, driving the progression of periodontal diseases by activating immune cells, promoting osteoclast differentiation, and stimulating the production of matrix metalloproteinases. This leads to the degr

INTRODUCTION: Chronic tonsillitis is a multifactorial immunopathological process that contributes to the development of tonsillitis-associated pathology. In turn, this tonsillitis-associated pathology potentiates and aggravates the course of chronic tonsillitis. In the literature, there are data on the possible influence of oropharyngeal loci of focal chronic infection on the body as a whole. One of such foci that can aggravate the course of chronic tonsillitis and maintain sensitization of the body are periodontal pockets formed during the inflammatory process in periodontal tissues. Highly p

Inflammatory periodontal diseases are highly prevalent, although most of these diseases develop and progress slowly, often unnoticed by the affected individual. However, a subgroup of these diseases include aggressive and acute forms that have a relatively low prevalence but show a rapid-course, high rate of progression leading to severe destruction of the periodontal tissues, or cause systemic symptoms that often require urgent attention from healthcare providers. Aggressive periodontitis is an early-onset, destructive disease that shows a high rate of periodontal progression and distinctive
