BACKGROUND: Community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN) index is commonly used to measure periodontal disease. It's uniqueness, apart from assessing the periodontal status, also gives the treatment needs for the underlying condition. Benzoyl-DL-arginine napthylamide (BANA) test is a chair side diagnostic test used to detect the presence of putative periodontal pathogens. Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) represents a leading global cause of mortality, with emerging evidence linking periodontal disease to cardiovascular risk through systemic inflammatory pathways. An experimental periodontal screening examination and index was used to measure the prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis among 1,334 soldiers at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Although 12.1% of the subjects demonstrated no disease, 40.3% were found to have gingivitis. In this sample group, the occurrence of gingivitis decreased with increasing age. Early periodontitis (probing depths of 3-5 mm) was detected in 35.7% of the subjects, and subjects with moderate to advanced periodontitis (probing depths greater than 5 mm) comprised 11.9% of the sample. Cigarette smoking is both a strong and common risk factor for chronic periodontitis. It is a multi-dimensional exposure that is difficult to model accurately. We propose a new comprehensive smoking index (CSI) that accounts for intensity, duration, and recency of smoking and allows for estimation of the half-life of the smoking effect. Using NHANES III data from 12,623 subjects aged 20+ yrs, we compared the performance of the CSI with that of various conventional approaches using multiple logistic regression models of chronic periodontitis.
