Peristalsis prevents ureteral dilation.

PURPOSE: The etiology of ureteral dilation in primary nonrefluxing, nonobstructing megaureters is still not well understood. Impaired ureteral peristalsis has been theorized as one of the contributing factors. However, ureteral peristalsis and its "normal" function is not well defined. In this study, using mathematical modeling techniques, we aim to better understand how ureteral peristalsis works. This is the first model to consider clinically observed, back-and-forth, cyclic wall longitudinal motion during peristalsis. We hypothesize that dysfunctional ureteral peristalsis, caused by insuffi

Value of endometrial peristalsis analysis technique in detecting and analyzing endometrial peristalsis features.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial peristalsis (EmP) has been considered as a new indicator for evaluating endometrial receptivity and is associated with embryo implantation rate and successful pregnancy rate. However, EmP remains understudied, inconsistently measured, and poorly understood. New methods are needed urgently for better clinical practice. AIM: To explore the value of EmP analysis (EmPA) technique in detecting and analyzing EmP features automatically and quantitatively. METHODS: One hundred and forty-five patients without abnormal findings on conventional transvaginal ultrasound were inclu

c-kit and ureteral peristalsis.

PURPOSE: c-kit encodes a tyrosine kinase receptor that is required for the differentiation of a wide variety of cells during embryogenesis, including pacemaker cells of the gut. Functional expression of this tyrosine kinase receptor is required for gut peristalsis and c-kit expression has recently been documented in the adult murine urinary tract. In this study we analyzed the temporal onset of c-kit expression during ureter morphogenesis in vivo and determined if c-kit activity is essential for ureteral peristalsis in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The kidneys and ureters of gestational days

Neuromuscular control of esophageal peristalsis.

The esophagus is a muscular conduit connecting the pharynx and the stomach. Its function is controlled by an intrinsic nervous system and by input from the central nervous system through the vagus nerve. Peristalsis in its striated muscle is directed by sequential vagal excitation arising in the brain stem, whereas peristalsis in its smooth muscle involves complex interactions among the central and peripheral neural systems and the smooth muscle elements of the esophagus. The peripheral neuronal elements responsible for producing esophageal off-response, relaxation of the lower esophageal sphi

The renal pelvis and ureteral peristalsis. II. The pelvic pressure and its relation to the frequency of ureteral peristalsis.

The coordination between the renal pelvis and ureteral peristalsis is an important part of the hydrodynamics of the upper urinary tract. Pelvic pressure and frequency of ureteral peristalsis were registered simultaneously in 28 adult, female dogs. A mathematical analysis of these observation showed a non-linear relation of a "power function" in approximately 85% of the investigations. Hysteresis was demonstrated between the power functions of the increasing and of the subsequent decreasing diuresis in 15 of the examined dogs. It was concluded that the renal pelvis in a monocalyceal system gove

Postprandial peristalsis in the human duodenum.

MMC-related retroperistalsis is a cyclical phenomenon in the duodenum linked to phase III. The aim of this study was to elucidate the direction of propagation of juxtapyloric duodenal pressure waves in the postprandial state in healthy humans and to compare with the contractions in the interdigestive phase II. Antroduodenal manometry was performed in 11 healthy subjects. Individual pressure waves propagating along a 6-cm duodenal segment were analysed with respect to the proportions of antegrade and retrograde propagation in the four duodenal subsegments (D1-D2) to (D4-D5), each subsegment bei

Coordination of peristalsis in pharynx and esophagus.

When a swallowed liquid bolus is followed from mouth to stomach in man by contrast studies or manometry, it traverses its course without hesitation even though the bolus is propelled by striated muscle contraction in the first part of its journey and smooth muscle in the latter part. The striated muscle is innervated by excitatory cholinergic nicotinic cranial nerves whereas the smooth muscle of the esophagus is innervated by the enteric nervous system (ENS) through excitatory and inhibitory nerves. These differences can be demonstrated by observing the inhibitory effects of curare and atropin

Peristalsis-Induced Mechanical Activation of Macrophages.

Inflammation is a complex process that drives both acute and chronic diseases. It is modulated by cascading biochemical and biophysical cues that result in immune cell activation. Macrophages are a primary immune cell type that are involved in multiple inflammatory conditions, including cancer, fibrosis, and autoimmune diseases. Traditional methods of investigating macrophage activation involve biochemical stimulation with defined cytokine or chemokine cues, activating macrophages into the edges of a pro- or anti-inflammatory state. Emerging evidence suggests that biophysical cues also play a

Investigation of uterine peristalsis diurnal variation.

BACKGROUND: In women of reproductive age, wavelike movements of the subendometrial myometrium, which is called uterine peristalsis, is considered to be related with fertility and menstrual problems. This is because the direction and frequency of peristalsis is known to be different among menstrual cycle phases. However, nothing is known as regarding diurnal variations. This study was designed to evaluate for the presence of a diurnal variation in uterine peristalsis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR studies were performed on 12 volunteers of reproductive age using a 1.5-T magnet, four times per day

The effect of gravity on oesophageal peristalsis in humans.

Many mammalian species including non-human primates consume water in a body position not aided by gravity and it has been conjectured that oesophageal peristalsis overcomes gravity in humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of gravity on oesophageal peristalsis in humans in response to water swallows. Six females (30-43 years old) and six males (27-46 years old) without oesophageal symptoms underwent oesophageal motility testing with intraluminal microtransducers placed 5, 7.5, 10 and 15 cm above the lower oesophageal sphincter. Subjects received ten 5 mL water swallows

The effects of cisapride on the topography of oesophageal peristalsis.

BACKGROUND: Topographic analysis of oesophageal motility in humans demonstrates sequential pressure regions in the peristaltic wave. This study was designed to see if cisapride preferentially affects any of the topographic regions. METHODS: Fifteen asymptomatic volunteers received placebo, 10 mg or 20 mg of cisapride orally in a double-blind, single-dose trial. Topographic plots of oesophageal peristalsis through the oesophageal body and lower sphincter were analysed before and after drug administration for each subject. RESULTS: Four sequential contraction segments through the oesophageal b

Peristalsis and antiperistalsis in the chicken caecum are myogenic.

Peristalsis in the chicken caecum was investigated by recording the responses of isolated segments of the caecum to either fluid distension using a modified Trendelenburg apparatus or by monitoring circular muscle activity following localized radial distension of adjacent areas. Raising the intraluminal pressure did not initiate peristalsis except in the presence of tetrodotoxin, local anaesthetics and high concentrations of phentolamine. The effect of these drugs was reversible. Localized distension generally produced either a small relaxation of the circular muscle or no response at all on b

The impact of primary peristalsis, contractile reserve, and secondary peristalsis on esophageal clearance measured by timed barium esophagogram.

BACKGROUND: Primary and secondary peristalsis facilitate esophageal bolus transport; however, their relative impact for bolus clearance remains unclear. We aimed to compare primary peristalsis and contractile reserve on high-resolution manometry (HRM) and secondary peristalsis on functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) Panometry with emptying on timed barium esophagogram (TBE) and incorporate findings into a comprehensive model of esophageal function. METHODS: Adult patients who completed HRM with multiple rapid swallows (MRS), FLIP, and TBE for esophageal motility evaluation and without abnorm

Hyoscine-resistant peristalsis in guinea-pig ileum.

The effect of hyoscine on the peristaltic activity of the proximal and distal ileum of the guinea-pig was studied. Hyoscine strongly impaired peristalsis as indicated by the elevation of the threshold pressure and by the increased number of incomplete peristalses and blockades. Functional activity of the circular musculature was more markedly impaired. However, particularly in the distal ileum, complete peristalses occurred even after 70 min exposure to hyoscine at a concentration of 10(-6) g/ml. A tenfold increase in hyoscine concentration failed to produce further impairment of peristaltic a
