BACKGROUND: Urgent-start dialysis is a major problem for incident dialysis population. Urgent start on hemodialysis is associated with an increased risk of infectious or mechanical complications, and its mortality is equal to or higher than that of urgent start on peritoneal dialysis (PD). However, compared to patients starting PD in a planned setting, those on urgent-started PD have an increased risk of mechanical complications and lower technique survival.
METHODS: In this study, 101 adult incident dialysis patients (≥18 years old) who underwent Tenckhoff catheter implantation were enrolled

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a renal replacement therapy based on infusing a sterile solution into the peritoneal cavity through a catheter and provides for the removal of solutes and water using the peritoneal membrane as the exchange surface. This solution, which is in close contact with the capillaries in the peritoneum, allows diffusion solute transport and osmotic ultrafiltration water loss since it is hyperosmolar to plasma due to the addition of osmotic agents (most commonly glucose). Infusion and drainage of the solution into the peritoneal cavity can be performed in two ways: manually

BackgroundIron deficiency and anaemia are prevalent in people undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), necessitating effective iron supplementation. While oral iron is often preferred for its accessibility and cost, it may be insufficient or poorly tolerated. Intravenous (IV) iron is generally well tolerated and associated with improved haemoglobin response and reduced erythropoiesis-stimulating agent requirements, yet optimal dosing, administration intervals, and haematological targets remain under-researched, particularly in PD populations. Current prescribing practices vary significantly, refle

BACKGROUND: The longevity of peritoneal dialysis (PD) is limited by high rates of technique failure, some of which stem from peritoneal membrane injury. 'Biocompatible' PD solutions have been developed to reduce damage to the peritoneal membrane.
OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to look at the benefits and harms of biocompatible PD solutions in comparison to standard PD solutions in patients receiving PD.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Renal Group's Specialised Register (28 February 2013), through contact with the Trials Search Co-ordinator using search terms relevant to this review.

BACKGROUND: Biocompatible peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions, including neutral pH, low glucose degradation product (GDP) solutions and icodextrin, have previously been shown to favourably influence some patient-level outcomes, albeit based on generally sub-optimal quality studies. Several additional randomised controlled trials (RCT) evaluating biocompatible solutions in PD patients have been published recently. This is an update of a review first published in 2014.
OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to look at the benefits and harms of biocompatible PD solutions in comparison to standard PD solu

Incremental peritoneal dialysis, which has been attracting much attention recently, refers to the initiation of peritoneal dialysis using a modified dialysis regimen that takes into account a patient's residual kidney function. Incremental peritoneal dialysis has certain advantages over standard therapy in terms of reducing costs, limiting dextrose exposure, reducing waste, and perhaps improving outcomes associated with peritoneal dialysis. Implementing an incremental peritoneal dialysis program necessitates an understanding of the basic goals and objectives of peritoneal dialysis therapy in t

Since the introduction of the permanent peritoneal catheter, interest in chronic peritoneal dialysis is increasing. The automatic peritoneal dialysis cycler and the reverse osmosis peritoneal dialysis machine have been other development that made chronic peritoneal possible. Chronic peritoneal dialysis is indicated for the children, the elderly, those without hemodialysis access sites, those living along (for home dialysis) and the diabetics, whose retinopathy seems to progress less on peritoneal dialysis than on hemodialysis. Patients awaiting a kidney transplant can be maintained equally sat

Evaluation of a peritoneal dialysis (PD) program in a nephrology center involve qualitative and quantitative indicators on clinical outcomes. International guidelines recommend monitoring outcomes of peritoneal catheter implantation, catheter-related infections, peritonitis and purification adequacy. However, none of these parameters can determine the organizational efficiency of a peritoneal dialysis (PD) program. It is desirable that centers with PD programs serving ≤14 patients, once capable of performing the peritoneal equilibration test, either safeguard their expertise or establish colla

There have been significant advances in the understanding of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in the last 40 years, and uptake of PD as a modality of kidney replacement therapy is increasing worldwide. PD fluids, therefore, remains the lifeline for patients on this treatment. Developing these fluids to be efficacious in solute clearance and ultrafiltration, with minimal adverse consequences to peritoneal membrane health and systemic effects is a key requirement. Since the first PD fluid produced in 1959, modifications to PD fluids have been made. Nonetheless, the search for that ideal PD fluid remains

Certain preventable complications in the treatment of renal failure, in part related to the composition of commercially prepared peritoneal dialysis solutions, continue to occur.Solutions are advocated which would contain sodium 132, calcium 3.5, magnesium 1.5, chloride 102 and lactate or acetate 35 mEq./1., and dextrose 1.5% or about 4.25%. Elimination of 7% dextrose solutions and a reduction of the sodium and lactate concentrations should reduce complications due to hypovolemia, hyperglycemia, hypernatremia and alkalosis. Reduction in the number of solutions should simplify the procedure and

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal sclerosis is a histopathologic finding that is probably causative of long-term system failure in peritoneal dialysis (PD). It may be due to uremic toxicity and the influence of peritoneal dialysate components. We intended to clarify to which degree peritoneal fibrosis and vascular changes were associated with the modalities of PD and the peritoneal transport characteristics.
METHODS: Peritoneal biopsies of 41 patients suffering from end-stage renal disease were examined. Sixteen patients were at the initiation of dialysis treatment, and 25 patients were studied during c

Peritoneal sclerosis, a disorder similar to that previously identified in nonuremic patients, is being noted in peritoneal dialysis patients with increasing frequency. The etiology in dialysis patients remains unknown. An association with previous or ongoing peritoneal inflammation or irritation suggests that the incidence of peritoneal sclerosis could be reduced by rapidly controlling peritonitis and by eliminating the irritant properties of catheters, dialysate, and other materials used in performing peritoneal dialysis. If peritoneal sclerosis does supervene, weight loss, abdominal pain, an

Peritonitis is a common and severe complication in peritoneal dialysis (PD). Detailed recommendations on the prevention and treatment of PD-associated peritonitis have been published by the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD), but there is a substantial variation in clinical practice among dialysis units. Prophylactic antibiotics administered before PD catheter insertion, colonoscopy, or invasive gynecologic procedures, daily topical application of antibiotic cream or ointment to the catheter exit site, and prompt treatment of exit site or catheter infection are key measures t

We report a patient in Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) with tuberculous peritonitis by possible peritoneal infection due to the proximity between fallopian tube and the left ovary, a peritoneal liquid culture was constantly negative. The patient presented a bad clinic evolution. Her only medical history was hypercalcemia six months before developing a peritonitis and occasionally nausea and vomits To confirm the diagnosis it was needed a peritoneal biopsy by means of a laparoscopy with a removal of the peritoneal catheter and left anexectomy. Now, the patient is asintomatic in daily home h

This paper deals with the peritoneal microcirculation and with peritoneal exchange occurring in peritoneal dialysis (PD). The capillary wall is a major barrier to solute and water exchange across the peritoneal membrane. There is a bimodal size-selectivity of solute transport between blood and the peritoneal cavity, through pores of radius approximately 40-50 A as well as through a very low number of large pores of radius approximately 250 A. Furthermore, during glucose-induced osmosis during PD, nearly 40% of the total osmotic water flow occurs through molecular water channels, termed "aquapo

Reducing the frequency of peritonitis for patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) continues to be a challenge. This review focuses on recent updates in catheter care and other patient factors that influence infection rates. An experienced nursing staff plays an important role in teaching proper PD technique to new patients, but nursing staff must be cognizant of each patient's unique educational needs. Over time, many patients become less adherent to proper dialysis technique, such as washing hands or wearing a mask. This behavior is associated with higher risk of peritonitis and is modif

Peritonitis remains a primary challenge for the long-term success of peritoneal dialysis (PD) technique and one of the main reasons for catheter removal. Prevention and treatment of catheter-related infections are major concerns to avoid peritonitis. The use of taurolidine catheter-locking solution to avoid the development of a biofilm in the catheter's lumen has obtained good results in hemodialysis catheters for reducing infection rates, although there is scarce literature available regarding its utility in PD. We describe the case of a woman in her 60s who developed relapsing peritonitis du

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis has become commonly used for renal replacement therapy; however, some patients withdraw from peritoneal dialysis due to complications, including peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis, resulting in the low number of patients on peritoneal dialysis. Risk factors for peritoneal dialysis withdrawal due to peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis are less certain. This retrospective study aimed to investigate these risk factors.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical characteristics, laboratory data, and causative microorganisms of 204 episodes of peritoneal
