The genus Peromyscus has been extensively used as a model for ecological, behavioral, and evolutionary studies. This study used auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), craniofacial morphology, and pinna measurements to compare two wild-caught species, Peromyscus leucopus and Peromyscus maniculatus. It was observed that P. leucopus exhibited larger features and bigger overall size compared to P. maniculatus. ABR recordings showed similar hearing thresholds with peak sensitivity between 8 and 46 kHz for both species. There were no significant differences between species for absolute amplitudes of w

We evaluated the susceptibility of laboratory-reared adult and infant white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) to a known pathogenic isolate of Borrelia burgdorferi (N40). Two-month-old and 3-day-old Peromyscus were inoculated intradermally with 10(6) to 10(7) spirochetes. At 21 days for adults or 30 days for infants post inoculation, mice were killed, and tissues were cultured for spirochetes and examined microscopically. Based on serology and culture, adult mice became infected but did not have any gross or microscopic lesions. Mice inoculated as infants became infected, and also developed ca

A new type of hereditary cataract was predicted in the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) by the presence of syndactyly of the hind feet. Early morphologic changes were found in the equatorial cells that differentiated into new lens fibers. Later swelling at the anterior and posterior poles of these cells produced lens opacities. Anterior and posterior subcapsular cataracts progressed to a hypermature shrunken lens.

The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, is the primary Lyme disease vector in the eastern United States. Both immature stages of I. scapularis take blood meals from mice belonging to the genus Peromyscus. Mice are active during the night and spend the majority of diel periods in nests. Thus, immature I. scapularis have a greater opportunity to drop from Peromyscus hosts while in nests compared with the forest floor. Here, we collected 11 Peromyscus nests during a 3-mo period during which the immature I. scapularis are known to be active. We then examined nesting materials for the presence

Arthropods pests are most frequently associated with both plants and vertebrate animals. Ticks, in particular the blacklegged ticks Ixodes scapularis Say and Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls (Acari: Ixodidae), are associated with wildlife hosts and are the primary vectors of Lyme disease, the most frequently reported vector-borne disease in the United States. Immature blacklegged ticks in the eastern United States frequently use small mammals from the genus Peromyscus as hosts. These mice are competent reservoirs for Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, as well as other ti

Modes of ectoparasite reinfestations were studied on ectoparasite-free deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) returned to their natural habitat on the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Siskiyou County, California, during the summer of 1977. The age of the host made no significant difference in the mode of reinfestation of lice, fleas, or mites. Flea reinfestation rates were related to the sex of the host, requiring 4 and 2 days, respectively, to reach control levels on male and female hosts. Mite populations reached the control level within 1 day, regardless of the sex of the host. No statistica

Rodent diversification is associated with a large diversity of species-specific social vocalizations generated by two distinct laryngeal sound production mechanisms: whistling and airflow-induced vocal fold vibration. Understanding the relative importance of each modality to context-dependent acoustic interactions requires comparative analyses among closely related species. In this study, we used light gas experiments, acoustic analyses and laryngeal morphometrics to identify the distribution of the two mechanisms among six species of deer mice (Peromyscus spp.). We found that high frequency v

A population of cloud forest mice (Peromyscus nudipes) at latitude 10 degrees N near Monteverde, Costa Rica, was sampled four times by live-trapping twice during the 7-8 month wet season and twice during the 4-5 month dry season in 1989 and 1990. Body weights were lower during the early part of the dry season in males and throughout the dry season in females than at other times. Testes and seminal vesicles were somewhat lighter early in the dry season, but epididymal spermatozoa were abundant in most males throughout the year. Adult females ovulated, mated and became pregnant in the wet and dr

Four newly hatched larvae of the warble fly, Cuterebra angustifrons, were successfully introduced into the mouse host, Peromyscus leucopus, by application to the belly skin, the mouth, and the nose. Regardless of the site of entry, each larva migrated to the inguinal region of the host and completed its development normally.

We demonstrate that 6 distinct Peromyscus rodent species are permissive to experimental infection with Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV). Viral RNA and SNV antibodies were detected in members of all 6 species. P. leucopus mice demonstrated markedly higher viral and antibody titers than P. maniculatus mice, the established primary hosts for SNV.

Sixteen wild Peromyscus leucopus, trapped for the establishment of a breeding colony, developed signs of neurological damage (trembling, incoordination, circling, head tilt, and lameness of the rear legs) 2-47 days after capture in southern Wisconsin. Spirochetes were cultured from the brain of 5/11 mice, and Borrelia burgdorferi was cultured from 1 brain. A spirochete was isolated from the bladder of 1 mouse. The spirochete was identified by fluorescent antibody staining with the monoclonal antibody specific for B. burgdorferi, H5332. Serum antibodies to the spirochete were found in 14/15 mic

Cataract--webbed (cw) in the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is a recessive mutant that is manifested by syndactyly (involving soft tissues) and eye defects including cataract. Within cw/cw mice, the age at which cataract first appears is genetically controlled. Evidence for the activity of genetic modifiers is the early appearance of cataracts in the offspring of parents that developed cataracts at early ages.

The mammalian larynx is a complex structure of mixed embryological origin, with its evolutionary diversification and its form-function relationship of interest to biologists and clinicians. This study compared the size and shape of the laryngeal cartilaginous framework and airway in two phylogenetically distant mouse species, the California mouse and House mouse, with distinct vocal behaviours. Using three-dimensional imaging and geometric morphometrics, we analysed ontogenetic shape changes from birth to old age to assess species differences, developmental trajectories and integration of cart

Ticks are obligate hematophagous parasites and pathogen vectors responsible for morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ixodes scapularis is a vector for at least seven pathogens relevant to human and animal health, including the Lyme disease microbe, Borrelia burgdorferi, and the causative agent of anaplasmosis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Tick-host interactions affect the maintenance of tick-borne pathogens in a population. Here, we report that repeated I. scapularis larval infestations on the wild host species Peromyscus leucopus lead to immune-mediated rejection of the tick, a phenomenon termed

Leptospirosis is a global zoonotic disease affecting humans, wildlife, companion, and domestic animals. Incidental hosts can contract the disease directly or indirectly from asymptomatic reservoir hosts, most commonly small rodents. The Golden Syrian hamster is recognized as the dominant rodent model for acute leptospirosis because the animals are susceptible to many serovars and are used to maintain laboratory strains and test bacterin vaccine efficacy. However, hamsters are primarily used in survival-based studies, and investigations into host immune response and disease pathogenesis are lim

The tick-borne flavivirus, Powassan virus (POWV) causes life-threatening encephalitis in humans in North America and Europe. POWV is transmitted by ixodid tick vectors that feed on small to medium-sized mammals, such as Peromyscus leucopus mice, which may serve as either reservoir, bridge or amplification hosts. Intraperitoneal and intracranial inoculation of 4-week old Peromyscus leucopus mice with 103 PFU of POWV did not result in overt clinical signs of disease. However, following intracranial inoculation, infected mice seroconverted to POWV and histopathological examinations revealed that

Powassan virus (POWV) is a tick-borne Flavivirus responsible for life-threatening encephalitis in North America and some regions of Russia. The ticks that have been reported to transmit the virus belong to the Ixodes species, and they feed on small-to-medium-sized mammals, such as Peromyscus leucopus mice, skunks, and woodchucks. We previously developed a P. leucopus mouse model of POWV infection, and the model is characterized by a lack of clinical signs of disease following intraperitoneal or intracranial inoculation. However, intracranial inoculation results in mild subclinical encephalitis
