Formalehyde in personal care products.

Personal care products reported to cause allergic contact dermatitis from the presence of formaldehyde need to be re-examined in light of recent chemical developments in our understanding of the film former, toluene sulfonamide formaldehyde resin, the preservatives diazolidinyl urea and imidazolidinyl urea, and formalin. This paper will elucidate these chemistries as well as review how formaldehyde is used in personal care products in raw materials and formaldehyde donor preservatives.

Chromhidrosis Linked to Personal Care Products.

Eccrine chromhidrosis (CH) is a rare condition characterized by the excretion of colored sweat from eccrine glands. This case report contributes to the medical literature by highlighting two instances of eccrine CH linked to over-the-counter personal care products, an association not previously documented. These products contained FD&C Blue No. 1, D&C Red No. 33, and Ext. D&C Violet No. 2, which are known colorants in various consumer items. These cases underscore the potential for personal care products containing colored dyes to cause eccrine CH. The medical community and consumers must be v

Personal care products disrupt the human oxidation field.

People generate hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the presence of ozone via the ozonolysis of skin-emitted alkenes. In this study, we found that the application of personal care products (PCPs) including fragrances and body lotions suppresses the human oxidation field. Body lotion hampers the generation of 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, a key OH precursor, while many volatile ingredients of PCPs enhance OH loss in the gas phase. Although fragrances contain terpenes capable of generating OH through ozonolysis, the much larger amount of ethanol solvent acts as a large OH sink. We combined a multiphase chemica

Fast unmasking toxicity of safe personal care products.

Personal care products are used several times a day and come into contact with the skin for many hours. As hazard-related data on products are rare, an imaging safety screening was developed. For the first time, it detected known and unknown hazardous compounds in 140 personal care products from 20 different product segments, including beauty and lifestyle products. The evidence-based chromatographic-hazard-related profiling detected genotoxic, cytotoxic, and estrogenic compounds, which were assigned to structural groups, and revealed that personal care products are not as safe as stated. Bacillus cereus in personal care products: risk to consumers.

Bacillus cereus is ubiquitous in nature and thus occurs naturally in a wide range of raw materials and foodstuffs. B. cereus spores are resistant to desiccation and heat and able to survive dry storage and cooking. Vegetative cells produce several toxins which on ingestion in sufficient numbers can cause vomiting and/or diarrhoea depending on the toxins produced. Gastrointestinal disease is commonly associated with reheated or inadequately cooked foods. In addition to being a rare cause of several acute infections (e.g. pneumonia and septicaemia), B. cereus can also cause localized infection o

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles in food and personal care products.

Titanium dioxide is a common additive in many food, personal care, and other consumer products used by people, which after use can enter the sewage system and, subsequently, enter the environment as treated effluent discharged to surface waters or biosolids applied to agricultural land, incinerated wastes, or landfill solids. This study quantifies the amount of titanium in common food products, derives estimates of human exposure to dietary (nano-) TiO(2), and discusses the impact of the nanoscale fraction of TiO(2) entering the environment. The foods with the highest content of TiO(2) include

Effects of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products on Insects.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCP) are omnipresent in our daily lives, and these emerging contaminants require increasing attention. PPCP and their metabolites are found in treated wastewater and in biosolids resulting from wastewater treatment, thus providing routes for dissemination to soils, freshwater, and groundwater, with subsequent consequences for insects. This review explores the effects of PPCP on the molecular, physiological, and biological (including behavior) responses of insects and consequences for their microbiota. As several PPCP can bioaccumulate in insects, in

Toxic Ingredients in Personal Care Products: A Dermatological Perspective.

Environmental dermatology is the study of how environmental factors affect the integumentary system. The environment includes natural and built habitats, encompassing ambient exposure, occupational exposures, and lifestyle exposures secondary to dietary and personal care choices. This review explores common toxins found in personal care products and packaging, such as bisphenols, parabens, phthalates, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, p-phenylenediamine, and formaldehyde. Exposure to these toxins has been associated with carcinogenic, obesogenic, or proinflammatory effects that can potenti

Formaldehyde Release From Personal Care Products: Chromotropic Acid Method Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preservatives such as formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers (F/FRs) are found in personal care products. Studies from Europe and Israel have indicated that products with undeclared F/FRs on product labels may have detectable levels of formaldehyde. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the presence of formaldehyde in samples of US personal care products. METHODS: Fifty-four baby and adult products were tested with the chromotropic acid method. A blinded investigator graded the color change as mild, moderate, or strong. RESULTS: All 8 products declaring F/FRs resulte

Safety and efficacy of personal care products containing colloidal oatmeal.

BACKGROUND: Colloidal oatmeal is a natural ingredient used in the formulation of a range of personal care products for relief of skin dryness and itchiness. It is also used as an adjunctive product in atopic dermatitis. The safety of personal care products used on vulnerable skin is of particular importance and the risk of developing further skin irritations and/or allergies should be minimized. METHODS: In a series of studies, we tested the safety of personal care products containing oatmeal (creams, cleansers, lotions) by assessing their irritant/allergenic potential on repeat insult patch

Sources of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in swimming pools.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in swimming pool water are hypothesized to originate from fill water and anthropogenic sources like urine, sweat, swimwear and body surfaces. However, research exploring PPCP origins in pools is lacking. This research investigates PPCP sources at 31 swimming pools. Pool water was analyzed for 24 representative PPCPs using advanced liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques. Fill water was analyzed as a contamination source and to determine if swimmers introduce PPCPs to pools. Results show every PPCP in fill water was present in pools

Oat and wheat as contact allergens in personal care products.

Oat and wheat are used as ingredients in various cosmetics and personal care products because of their moisturizing properties. Impaired barrier functions in atopic dermatitis (AD) may increase the risks of sensitization to oat and wheat proteins via skin. Immediate- and delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions to oat and wheat in personal care products have been reported in previous studies, and most of those cases were patients with AD. Patch testing with oat and wheat proteins should be performed more frequently, especially in atopic children. It may help identify contact dermatitis, which m

Limonene emission dynamics of personal care products from different surface materials.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and ozone. Fragranced personal care products (PCPs) have been identified as important contributors to VOC emissions in urban and indoor environments, particularly as a source of limonene, which has high SOA mass yields. However, the factors controlling fragranced PCP emission dynamics from different surface types remain unclear. This research quantified the emission dynamics of limonene evaporation from different fragranced PCP types spread across different surface materials. To conduct the study, an

Common allergens present in personal care products: identification, diagnosis, and management.

The incidence of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) reactions to personal care products has progressively increased, affecting women more so than men. Fragrances and preservatives are the major sensitizers behind cosmetic-induced ACD, due to their ubiquitous presence in these products, though emulsifiers, ultraviolet filters, and botanical allergens have been implicated as well. While patch testing is the standard for diagnosing ACD, many cosmetic-specific antigens are not currently included within the commercially available kits. Therefore, patch testing for potential cosmetic-induced ACD shou

Role of personal care products as endocrine disruptors affecting reproductive age women.

The impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on public health is growing due to their wide-ranging consequence and likelihood of morbidity on human health. Humans are confronted with EDCs through their skin and drinks, as well as by inhaling. EDCs are extensively dispersed in the environment. EDCs have been shown to primarily influence puberty, the reproductive system, embryonic growth, the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG) neuroendocrine axis, and gender differentiation in the foetus, despite their capacity to influence a variety of hormone systems. Safety assessment of starch-based personal care products: Nanocapsules and pickering emulsions.

The safety profile of the ingredients used in topical dosage forms and its evaluation is an issue of utmost importance. A suitable equilibrium between safety and efficacy is crucial before promoting a dermatological product. The aim of this work was to assess the safety and biological effects of starch-based vehicles (St-BV) used in such products. The hazard, exposure and dose-response assessment were used to characterize the risk of each ingredient. The EpiSkin™ assay and human repeat insult patch tests were performed to compare the theoretical safety assessment to in vitro and in vivo data.

Personal care products and endocrine disruption: A critical review of the literature.

This article reviews laboratory and epidemiological research into the endocrine disruptive effects of components of personal care products, namely, phthalate esters, parabens, ultraviolet (UV) filters, polycyclic musks, and antimicrobials. High doses of phthalates in utero can produce “phthalate syndrome,” demasculinizing effects in male rat offspring due to impaired testosterone production by fetal testes. However, evidence linking phthalate exposure to similar effects in humans appears inconclusive. Furthermore, phthalate exposure derived from personal care products is within s
